Re: Ford 3 speed g/boxes....and propshafts

Tried to email you an attachment on the
105e axle conversion but it bounced back. Do you have an email address I can
send to?

Maps and aerial images.

For your information, a brilliant site for aerial images. Gives 4 different views of your neighbours back yards!! with "birds eye view" selected.  www.aboutmyplace.co.uk  The site does not cover the whole of the UK yet, so if "birds eye view" does not come up at the top of the map, I suggest you type in "Doynton" in the search box and have a play.
Other sites I know of are, www.192.com/maps/  Images appear the further you zoom into an area.
www.maps.google.co.uk Select hybrid or satellite for images.
www.earth.google.com You have to download software, (its free), then you can zoom into anywhere in the world.

The only problem I have found when searching for trials hills, is that all the images are captured in the summer, and its difficult to see the hills from the trees.
Any body know of any other good, and free, mapping sites.

Centre of Gravity

Weight Distribution

In my opinion its time to revert to this discussion. I think some of the more competitive cars carry so much ballast that its not good for the sport.
  1. It makes the gap between the have's and the have nots too big.
  2. There could be a danger element. One day one of them will go end over end.
  3. They must be pigs to drive on the road. Possible doubts about legality or insurance cover
  4. Damage to sections

My suggestion is we go back to the previous idea of ACTC + MCC buying a set of portable electronic scales. Next season every car is weighed and the driver given the results. This data is then analysed and those that understand these things draw up a permitted weight distribution for each class that is effective from 1st Jan 2009.

If a car fails at scruitineering he is allowed to adjust and re-submit. The scrut would also do a secret check on-route. If you fail that you are either penalised a certain no of points or thrown out.

The detail is not important. That can be worked out. Its the principle. Is it a good idea? (no its not new and not mine but perhaps time to look at again).

Getting started

Hello all!
I'm in the early stages of getting started trialling, ie I've had a few goes, and am now looking to get a car of my own. Initially for PCT's but something that is capable of being developed into Classic trial car.
My preferred configuration would be front engined, rear wheel drive, open top, which I think would point me towards Marlins, Duttons, Spartans etc.
What should I be looking for or avoiding?
Your opinions would be very welcome!

Welcome Richard Nikel

Richard has several interesting Inp based cars and has recently shared the driving of brother Ed's Dellow Rep in some Falcon PCT's. Richard is now looking for a trials car of his own.

Allen 2007

Hello all,

I sent my entry form for the Allen trial some weeks ago. I hadn't heard anything back from BMC so I gave Carlie Hart a call.

It turns out that my entry from was never delivered to Carlie, and as such I do not have a place in the trial. Carlie informs me that the Allen is fully subscribed and I am now 5th on the reserve list. Bummer! Thanks royal mail.

If anyone has a place in the Allen but can't make it please could you let Carlie (or me) know and maybe I'll get a start number.

Kind regards,
from an all fired up with nowhere to go, Daniel Minett-Smith!

Ford 3 speed g/boxes....and propshafts

a question for Ren5, apparently......how to easily adapt a ford 3 speed gearbox, from a torque tube transmission..[Ford 103E Pop], to  a 'hardy-spicer' type propshaft?

I have tried 100E box, but tailshaft is too long....leading to a prop that is too short.

also, the engine is a 10 horse jobbie, and the gearbox has the handy clutch lever things.

but I can't seem to get a prop arrangement that stays attached to the gearbox.

I've tried using the  top end of a torque tube, up to the loose roller bearing.....welded to its cones, then bolted to the box, with the driveshaft welded to the splined tube normally found at the other end of the shaft......this connects to the gearbox shaft.....but not for long!

is there any easy adaption I can be pointed to?

What gearboxes adapt easily to the ford 10HP engine?

[physical size and weight is important....there needs to be room for my feet!]

Pre-war Morgan has to go.

sadly, I need to pass on my 1939 Morgan 4/4....to someone with the time, and/or money, to rejuvinate it.

It is a 1939 4/4 4-seater....Standard Special engine.

I ran it for some time, years ago.....but the engine needed rebuilding, so out it came.

crank, rebore, and camshaft bearings all re-newed/ machined.

but the project stalled over piston [ring] issues.....then my young son came along....and the back burner became the freezer........and other, more instantly-solveable projects reared up.

the car is NOT a basket case, however, and with either the engine sorting, or something of similar ilk installed [I actually have a 1275 marina engine, modified to fit......'twas an idea of mine, encouraged by Mr Comber, of Morgan trials special fame.
It has a fully rebuilt back axle, a reasonable new fuel tank, new rear floor.
It still has its front floor boards.
It needs a new wooden bulkhead...not a big job, ally-sheathed plywood [for caravans] is ideal......
some of the original instruments are missing [replaced], but it has its original speedo.
it has a recent new Springalex steering wheel.....and renewed steering box/column.

bonnets are useable, but would need re-making for those who are fussy....as do the wings, which are whole, but the beaded edges have broken here and there.

The car is complete....but in several bits.....some of which are worn/damaged..like sidescreens, hood frame...etc...seats need..umm...well....you CAN sit on them...

I also have all the factory details....and the number cannot be transferred.....plus it's SORNed.

I found it a real nuisance trying to get my large bulk (Simon will confirm/larf] behind the wheel....but comfy once trapped in place.

The price wont be cheap.....but will be a cheap way into Morganing.....let's say, about half the price of a good Dellow?

Salisbury Axle

If you went to the Falcon Brickhill Trial a few weeks ago, you would have seen my good friend's Scimitar-based special.  He used a 1970's coupe as the donor car.  The rear axle is a Salisbury unit and is about an inch narrower than the later GTE Scimitars.  The axle proved not to be strong enough under trials conditions.  Does anybody know of a Salisbury 4-star dif. that will fit into the Scimitar unit to solve this problem?  We have heard that the limited slip dif. has a 4-star set up as standard.  Is this correct and can it be adapted to give a strong non-LSD set up?  Any suggestions gratefully received!

Preparing a frogeye sprite.

I'm currently preparing a frogeye sprite and hope to come over from N Ireland to do one of the MCC trials in class 5. The car has been used for Irish retro rallies and sits up a bit. Is it worth finding a van diff or is a Minor one OK. The car runs a fairly torquey 1320cc engine and a Toyota gearbox. Also is the petrol tank too exposed as standard. Any advice either general or specific to a Frogeye would be much appreciated. The only trial I've done in England is the VSCC lakeland a number of years ago.
Thanks

Dermot Johnson

Welcome John Groves & Dermot Johnson

Camel Classic Trial

Regs. are now out for this trial.

Sorry folks, there is an error on the entry form. Regs. state entry fee is 짙28, which is correct but entry form states 짙27 as last year which is wrong.

Whoops!

Marlin Roadster, SWB, 1991, in very good condition.  Rivenhood weather equipment, leather seats.  Windwings and rigid sidescreens.  Far too good for a trials car really but I also have a 10CWT axle and hubs which I could sell with the car, as well as some vinyl covered seats and loads of suspension spares.  I'm looking £2395 for the car.  David Toms, 01208 72233 or 07976 104756

SU manifold for 1600 X flow wanted

Has anyone out there got a sidedraught manifold for either single or twin SU's to fit a 1600cc ford X flow engine for my Dellow rep.
An other alterative would be a single weber 40/45 manifold/carb.

Rob Clough's old VW Buggy

Does anybody know the whereabouts of my old Buggy I was using in 1991? I last heard of it being stored in Devon.
