Ideas for a VW Beach Buggy engine cage/tyre rack please

I am preparing my Beach buggy for trialling and am having trouble designing an engine cage/wheel holder for the back. Can anyone give me some ideas on attachment points.
The only strength is the original beetle floor/chassis. Is it necessary to build up a steel frame internally to brace a rear frame?

Christmas Quiz Q3

Christmas Quiz Q3 - A bit more up-to-date this time. This picture was taken on my first MCC trial (I was a passenger). The main question is what is the section?

Christmas Quiz Q2

No prizes this time. The question is who is the person next to the camera. It would be fun if you can identify the car, driver and event!

Record of pre-1930 trials routes

Devon CC has recently rejected my BOAT application for a couple of old roads at Pippacott in Braun ton Parish. These were used for local trials, with at least one section in the routes claimed, into the 50s and, in between events, by local riders for practice. Not sure trail riding as such was a pastime in those days!

I will be objecting to GONE but would like to add to the evidence I have already produced and it has been suggested that it would greatly help my case to have some written evidence of use for trials e.g. a

Can anyone advise what organisation would hold these sort of trails archives please - would it be the VMCC?

Re%3A%20Weight%20Distribution

As one who does carry a lot of ballast, the golf has been competing for 15 years and just about to turn 200k, I have driven to all the events and have only been passed once on a motorway by another trials car, (red MG). The golf is happy on the motorway and stops a lot quicker than when it left the factory, the handling is very good due to the trick suspension. As when the weather turns wet, greasy, and icy I will be leaving my road car at home.

The only difficult bit about driving the golf is not on the roads or going up the sections but reversing back down!

Air bottles

Andrew mentions CO2 bottles for tyre inflation in the Air Pumps thread.

Now I've been away from trials for far too many years (for reasons beyond my control) but I recall raising the safety of gas bottles with a number of 'bodies'. I was concerned because people were turning up to trials with bottles lashed to the rear of their cars for ballast - or rolling around in the boot of a saloon on one occasion.
In order to gather facts I phoned up BOC and spoke to a technical chap. He was "utterly horrified" when I described what was happening. He confirmed what I thought .... that if a car received a shunt up the rear and the valve broke off one of these bottles, it would quite possibly lead to it shooting off sideways like a small missile.
The fact that people were removing the guards that are on most bottles was another worry. They are not just a carrying handle, they protect the brass valve body from snapping off if the bottle is 'mishandled'.
He was also very concerned that bottles may be carried that do not have anti-burst valves fitted and that in the event of a vehicle catching fire the consequences for bystanders or firemen could be terminal.

Now I have not seen a recent Blue Book (since 2000) - so DID anything get done?
I know the VSCC are a bit of a law unto themselves but Longstone Tyres have been using a photo of the late James Diffey's Brescia Bugatti with what looks like a large divers bottle strapped to the back.

Air Pumps

I think that some time ago there was one or two reports on here about on-board air pumps for quick inflating of tyres. I can't remember what was said or recomended but seem to remember that there were some high pressure pumps available and a web site mentioned.
Can anyone with a better memory than mine, or who has some info help out please.

Martin Pratt from Chester Motor Club asks:-

I wonder if you or any of your contributors can throw any light on the following. I have a copy of a photograph of what appears to be an Allard Special, Reg No. FGP 750, climbing this section on the 1946 Liverpool MC Jeans Gold Cup Trial. This event ran on the 25/5/1946 according to the notes on the back of the original. Does anyone know anything further about this, or any other similar events run in N Wales.

New Troll Chassis?

Hi there,

I was talking to my brother and he asked does anybody still do the Troll chassis?
Who now owns the rights to build them?
I think there is a market for a kit like this again.
Just look how many Liege's it has brought into the sport.(Try and Order one of them or find one for sale)

Thanks

Lights . . . and Exeter

As we approach our first Exeter Trial, the occupants of the yeller Dutton are a little concerned about lighting, especially as we can't always see where we are going in daylight!

What are the rules on auxilary lighting?  The same as road rallies/scatters - 4 forward facing beams?

And any suggestions for dumping, sorry, parking, a trailer and tow car somewhere near Cirencester start where it will be okay until Sunday morning?

Starter motors

The starter in my Dellow (1600 X-FLOW) does not last. The windings tend to melt or the body falls apart! Any advise on fitting a pre engaged type,Would it be better?and what type/model should I try. The starter ring is new and standard.I think the motor fails due to the high compression rather than heavy use.
