Virus Warnin from Mike Furse

Hi Gassers,

Mike Furse has sent out an e-mail warning of a virus circulating amongst triallers. I looked it up on the Symantec Site and they say this could be a "hoax virus" (Whatever that means.). Anyway this is the link to what Symantec (Norton) have to say.

  1. I received the following e-mail from Andrea Lane:-   Dear All   Actually the message below this is a hoax in itself. DO NOT delete the sulfnbk.exe file. It is a file that is used by Windows. If you have already done it, don't worry you can get it back from your installation disks or you may find it in your deleted files folder (trash) and should be able to restore it from there.   It may not unduly affect your system if you delete it, until windows needs to run it one day! So don't panic. Do contact me if you need instructions on how to put it back.   Andrea

  2. Hi,   I received the following e-mail from Andrea.   Dear All

Just to warn you that David Alderson seems to have a virus (true this time!)
on his pc that is replying automatically to anyone that emails him. My virus
checker fortunately is picking it up. I am not sure if he is done anything
about it but I have emailed him to warn him.

Re my previous email about the virus hoax (SULFNBK.EXE) a couple of people
had already deleted the file and have asked how to restore it and how to
spot a hoax - here is my reply.

    *********************************

It's very easy to get the file back. (I am assuming that you are using
Windows 98 or 98se, in ME you use System Restore Utility). Just click on
Start, Run and type SFC (System File Checker) then choose the option restore
deleted file. You will then need to browse to your windows CD and that
should do it. (SFC is a useful utility to use if you have just installed a
new program to check that it hasn't altered any standard windows files too).

As for spotting a hoax it is very difficult but most big virus checker
companies have list of true virus's and hoaxes. But try looking here
http://www.virusbtn.com/Hoax/  (You will find that the SULFNBK.EXE one is at
the top of the list!) The best thing is to take all these emails with a
pinch of salt however. I have never yet found one that is true! I don't know
which virus checker you use but I use a free virus checker from
www.grisoft.com called AVG. You get free updates and they usually release a
new update the day a new virus is spotted. I think they are excellent
    (especially as they are free!).
