Transit diff in a Dellow

Those of you who know me will not be surprised to hear that I am looking for an alternative to the standard ford diff. The well tested fack diff are not avaliable at present. ( does anybody have one for sale? ) So i am building up infomation on splicing the ford transit diff to the crown wheel and pinion of the escort.I have detailed infomation on the work that is required. However can anybody tell me which transit diff is required? Has anybody got the correct parts for sale?

  1. Hi from Mike - to put a transit diff (4 star type) you need to change the gear wheels that fit on the of the half shafts for the ones from a standard escort unit so that the splines will fit.  As they are smaller in diameter where they fit into the casing we have made up split cylindrical bushes of stainless steel to make up the difference, you also need to space the gears further in towards the centre of the diff by using a couple of extra standard thrust washers on each side.  Having done all this you then need to run the diff with synthetic oil such as redline, expensive but worth every penny, it WILL fail otherwise! The diff needs to be spaces 3/16" - 1/4" out of the casing to ensure the half shaft line up centrally. Phil Parker and myself have sucessfully done this on two escorts. Alternativly if you are allowed to change the axle casing then you can use a BMC 10 cwt marina van axle with the transit diff direct as the half shafts do fit, but then you get BMC stud spacings - you can change this but thas another story !  Good luck
