Ladies/Gents.
Can anyone one give any advice on the following. I'm looking to start in Classical Trials in 07 and am thinking of either an MG Midget or a JZR (Morgan 3-wheeler Replica) both need a bit of work so any mods could be done then. Your comments (polite if poss!) appreciated. Thanks Steve
I was waiting for a three wheeler or Midget trialler to respond but as no one has here are my thoughts. A midget will need a fair bit of modification especially to the back axle, you will need to talk to a midget user to find out what. If the three wheeler is front wheel drive you will need to ballast it at the front, even if it is rear wheel drive you have one big disadvantage, the front wheels are in the ruts and the back wheel is in the centre hump (until it falls off) and it is impossible to miss all the obstructions and holes. Suggest you talk to Tony Divey who makes Trikings and trials one or a Morgan 3 wheeler user. Peter Mountain
ReplyDeleteHi Steve You are almost certainly better buying an existing vehicle which someone else has made work reliably than starting from scratch. There was a good trials prepared Midget advertised for sale recently in one of the MCC Newsletters. I don't know if it's gone yet but you could do worse than give Derek a ring and ask him: FOR SALE: MG Midget 1967 prepared for classic trials. Good, sound and tidy condition. Many class wins and a Triple award. High spec engine in very good condition. Roll over bar, sump guard, oil cooler, strengthened axle etc. All steel body- no GRP panels- in very presentable condition Quantity of useful spare parts - some new- included in sale. Asking price 2100 For further details please ring Derek Chatto 01773 853635.
ReplyDeleteUnless your plan is only to do the three MCC events (which could be tricky as you do not appear to be a member) the number events in which you can compete with a three wheeler is severely restricted. Therefore the Midget has to be the option, but these cars do need a lot of preparation. Talk to as many people as you can about what to do, but be aware that you will get as many different answers as there are people spoken to. You just have to filter the different answers into what seems best and suits your budget and workshop skills. If you are buying, then a pre prepared car would be better as it will get you on the hills quicker. Have you considered a Marlin? There seems to be a ready market for these, and if you don't like it in the longer term they hold their value and because there are available to buy they are quite easy to sell.
ReplyDeletethere is also a mg midget based class 7 on the sales and wants site or ring ray on 01579 348765 reliable car won lots of awards including a triple
ReplyDeleteThanks to everyone who has offered advice. I will give it some thought over a scotch or two and look forward to seeing you at a trial in 07
