Gearbox & Distributor Question

Hopefully the first question is easy - what is the gearbox oil capacity for an E93A - my 'new' gearbox does not have a level filler.

Secondly having purchased an Aquaplane head, do I need to have a different distributor? The increased height of the head doesn't seem to allow me to mesh the gears - or am I missing something?

Thanks

  1. According to my 1958 Pitmans Pop handbook the capacity is "holding 1 pint approx.", of SAE 90 oil or SAE 80 if the temperature is below 10 deg f. It notes "care should be taken not to overfill the gearbox owing to the risk of surplus oil passing into the clutch housing".   I guess the best place for info on your head would be Small Ford Spares, on www.smallfordspares.co.uk rgds John Salter

  2. it sounds like the short shaft (about 3"long ) is missing it has a offset slot each end ,it sits between the dissy and the skew gear ,you should not be able to see the gear unless you have dissmantled the engine , I think the length of the shaft varies with different engines , intresting things happen if it just fits ,(slips misfires  falls back in to place  when you check the timing )

  3.  ps i think you may changed your gear box from a 8hp to a 10hp (different ratios ) the 8 having a level plug and the ten having a dip stick to the front offside by the bell housing ,

  4. Thanks Ren5 - I had overlooked the short piece of tubing with the slotted ends! First rebuild I have undertaken of this type of engine. However careful measurement shows that with the increased height of the head, the slots will only just engage - looks like I will have to get a new piece made up. Secondly I do have the 'dip stick' type of gearbox but of course no dip stick - anyone out there got one?

  7. you could get the holes welded up and redrilled to the wider spacing or if enough room make adapter / spacer plates ,

  8. I have a gearbox in my garden!! Its got a dipstick in it. I have removed it, and will clean it . I will send you a piccy of it. For some reason it looks like a mouse has chewed the end up, but full level is clearly marked. Its no good to me. Is it of any use to you? Regards John Salter
