I wasn't aware there was a problem - I simply went into my local tyre supplier and told him I want Kingpin remoulds, Michelin pattern, in the sizes I required (175/14 and 165/14) and several days later I collected them and handed over a relatively small amount of cash. Did this quite a lot last year - the year before we ran the yeller dutton on the same tyres we'd run it on for three years before, but last year I went for super duper new grip . . and we bust at least one tyre per event.
Got so bad, I even bought a full on repair kit for sidewalls - which I've yet to try.
Kingpin took over when Colway stopped and I actually find them easier to get hold of. I use the kingpin 175x14 on the BM & get them from B.I.T.S (British & International Tyre Supplies) in Bristol, for a lot less than £25. You might have a problem though if they will only supply to trade customers but it's worth a call, and if you're prepared to buy a reasonable quantity they might sell to you. Check out your nearest B.I.T.S!! (Now come on, I meant in the phone book)! I suppose I could even put in a large order of mixed sizes if people want them, and get them to you at a trial somewhere. A bit short notice for this weekend but the next trial on my agenda is Bovey Down. Let me know.
I'm interested in the side wall repair kit that you mention Bri. Where does it come from and what does it do? I have several tyres with slight sidewall damage that I haven't had the heart to throw away yet, this might be their saviour. Reg
Puncture repair kit - I bought cleaner, solvent, vulcanising repair stuff and patches from www.auto4.co.uk last year. I've not actually used it yet - finding the time and the inclination both rather in short supply. I also never intend using the repaired tyre on the road - we tend to use fairly low pressures anyway, and I didn't want to be continually thinking of that repair . . slowly, or worse, rapidly, failing. But as we do a fair few PCTs, sorry, "car trials" too, the repaired tyres would be used for those - any failure in a field being no real problem.
Kingpin Tyres - and a list of tyres, sizes and pictures of patterns: www.kingpin-tyres.com/english.htm - go to cars, and the passanger cars . . .
I simply went into my local garage (Hall Street Motors, Crosshills, N.Yorks), gave the make, type and size . .. and a few quid lighter a few days later, I had new Kingpins fitted and balanced. (He's also really good on "conventional" tyres too - 205/50/15 for the tow car, the integrale - Michelin Pilots - fitted and balanced, 5 quid less than the cheapest internet supplier could only deliver for . . . Does MOTs for trials cars too - ran into a local Austin 7 driver (sorry, forget his name now) who I'd only ever seen on trials at the other end of the country!)
Just don't think of a warehouse in Durham, undoubtedly still containing piles of tyres emminently suited to ruining (sic) up mud tracks . . ..
Got my Kingpins 175R14 from B.I.T.S (British & International Tyre Supplies) in Bristol, but again this was to trade, will ask the next time I call them about supplying to the public. Think they were around £15 each......
Of the various tread patterns on the Kingpin site, which are legal and/or best for trialing ? I need to get a set of tyres and would be interested - anything around £25 or lower per tyre sounds interesting. As I am also in Bristol I looked at the BITS site they seem to have a retail operation called County tyres http://www.county-tyres.co.uk/ but I guess they would be quite a bit more through that route - if anyone arranges a "bulk buy" I would be interested.
Hi Duncan - any chance of a pair of 175 x 14's?

ReplyDeleteI'm certainly interested in any 165, 175 or 185 x 15" tyres that they may do.
ReplyDeleteReg, please can you find out if Kingpin are able to supply either 155 x 15 or 145 x 15 or 135 x 15 in the michelin pattern please ?
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Simon
