I was in Class 0 with my sidevalve Dellow. We had a nice run up to the start some visibility problems on the way to the first section at Haven Hill where we found the lights had taken their toll on the battery and had to push start it. After that no problems on the trial but....
We experienced our only delay here while we waited for a Land Rover to remove Michael Week's Midget. We enjoyed this and all the other Class 0 sections until Clough Mine where we failed in front of Dave Cooks lens. We then failed the last section when I selected third instead of first. However, looking at the damage to Richard Andrews Dellow perhaps that was a good thing!
We were disappointed that the "New Litton" was cancelled, especially as we were only a few cars from having a go. We finished just a little bit after scheduled time, signed off had a chat and drove off to our hotel only to have the diff break pulling away from the traffic lights in sight of the entrance !!!!
Enjoyed an excellent meal and good company at the club supper. Disappointed that nobody from on high was there to say a few words. Shame as it lacked the atmosphere of the Exeter do. Understand the main trial was tough, especially Bamford and that the new sections were appreciated.
How unlucky was that Michael! We ran as first car (88) on a few sections including Rileys and Litton. I thought the new format was excellent and an all round good, but tough trial. Calton, Excelsior and Litton embarrassed us. With some thought, even in the wet ground conditions, Litton is very useable and a shame to have been cancelled.
We had a good trial, until we got to the muddy sections at the end where the Midget's Ground Clearance was too low and the mud too thick. Nevertheless we did have a few problems starting with the starter not working as we were about to leave home. Unfortunately in order to take out the starter we needed to take out the Distributor and dip stick - the latter being left in the garage! Ross Nuten and Duncan Welch came to our assistance - many thanks. Arrived at the first stop where we were warned about exhaust noise, albeit being inside the Blue Book limits, which we did reduce with Rockwool, Chicken Wire and an additional piece of exhaust!. No problems at Haven Hill - we think it must have been Colin Burridge's Midget you saw. First issue however came on Putwell B, which although we cleaned we collected two punctures on the way. Brian Alexander and then John Parsons came to our rescue towing us to the main road. At the lunch stop we decided to fit a new tube, again with Duncan's much appreciated assistance. Here because Litton had been cancelled we were advised to go straight to Bamford which we did. After a delay here we then appeared to be running on our own albeit two hours late until we reached the dreaded mud at Clough Mine 2 and Dudwood 1. failures here spoiling our "clean sheet". The observed test at this stage had really got cut up completely stopping Howard Blackwell's Suzuki who was pushed out with a non test. Back at the finish we found we had obtained yet a third puncture - just as well we had put the tube in! We really would like to thank all those who helped us get to the finish and look forward to trying to do better next year. Colin & Michael
Hi all, We had great time. Got a puncture on Putwell "A" but queue at "B" gave us time to swap wheel and put tube in. we even got a clean. We then got puncture on Exclesior. My son James getting good a this wheeel swap now. Bamford we stayed on restart line! (anyone got video of our fail?) Clough Mine and Dudwood 1 took our award off us. Very pleased to clean Dudwood 2. Nice drive home, and having tea with my family at 5.00pm. cheers Steve & James Red TED Liege
I liked the new route and the new hills, particularly Riley's rise. Also really enjoyed the 2 at Clough mine and the 2 at Dudwood, they were a bit like one day trial sections and we managed to clean them all---- I think! We ran at 113 in my Troll and what I did not like were the holdups at every section. For us it was the Trial of The Long Wait's. If it had not been such a nice day I think I would have gone home early. We were let out of the new Carisbrook Water holding control over 30 minutes late and then never got back on time being over 2 hours late at one point. I was glad we had plotted the route onto the OS map as at breakfast we were told Litton and Tideswell Holding were cancelled and to go directly to Bamford. This was easy with a map but we met cars going in all sorts of directions. Failed the Restart on Bamford, started to go then just lost traction, dropped back a few meters and pulled away and drove out of the section. Thought Putwell 'B' was well past its use by date, its rough in a Troll so what is it like in a little Midget? Drove straight home from the finish as I had a comitment on Sunday so missed the supper. But I agree with Michael, there should be a MCC official at the supper to say a few words, they do it on the other trials and it adds to the atsmosphere. At least the C of C could say thank you to the marshals. This was my first trial for a year as I had a lay off due to boredom, I did enjoy being back trialing and look forward to the Exeter. Come over to two wheels chap, almost no queues and you get to do sections before they're cancelled. Gets a bit nippy sometimes though.
ED10 by bike: Took four colleagues from work around, three of whom were MCC first timers. The fog was shite, couldn't see a bloody thing through my goggles, then my specs went the same way. Love the sections in the dark, I'd do the whole trial that way if I could.
Had some fun blasting up some of the sections "restart cancelled" was music to my ears. One puncture between the five of us, after the final special test so it was down to Alison to nurse the Serow back to the finish whilst it was doing an impression of a wobbly jelly.
Route marking and road book milages were absolutely spot on as usual, we finished tired and happy, smiles all around.
Ran the restart at Rileys Rise, most of the cars had no real troubles, but the bikes had troubles, must had been the damp, muddy silppy ground, its a new hill, I couln't take part Passenger cried off, maybe looking for a new passenger next session!
I took Duncan Stephens with me as my regular passenger was working. He seemed to enjoy it, although the main comment of note was that we did more sections in the last two hours than we did in the first ten. We managed to pass the A-Board on Dudwood 1, but did not go all the way, otherwise it all seemed quite easy :)
yeah should be in a fibre glass tub with oceans of torque, no offence meant I passengered Dean Vowden when he had his many years ago awsome piece of kit......
Just seen results for Edinburgh Trial. Only Two Gold's must be a record. Never mind, must try harder next year ! Well done to all who gained an award Cheers Steve
We had a great, enjoyable event - thanks to all those involved in organising and running it. I enjoyed all the sections and thought that they presented a range of challenges, some rough and rocky, some muddy blasts, and we had no real problems anywhere. We failed Bamford due to lack of grip (much to our surprise) rather than the expected lack of power but gave it a good go, nearly making the restart box before the inevitable and unstoppable rear-ward motion began. We lost our award on Excelsior, failing the restart in a cloud of tire smoke - it is a killer restart and we actually moved about a metre before coming to a halt! Enjoyed cleaning Clough Mine 2, what a blast, shame about the old Litton. I dont think that queuing was much of an issue - we ran towards the end and only really queued twice. A queue at Rileys caused by a couple of blockages one after the other - just bad luck really nothing could be done about that - as soon as they were cleared it soon started moving again. The other queue was at Bamford - and since Litton and the holding control were cancelled, and competitors had been held back at Breakfast, a queue was inevitable. I enjoyed the Clough mine and Dudwood sections. i can understand the argument that they are a bit like 'one dayer sections' but in reality the Edinburgh is a one day trial. Also, the organisers struggle to find suitable hills every year, and every year lose more and more. There have been lots of complaints about the state of Putwell (which i agree was very very rough). That is another classic MCC hill that would need replacing. Just food for thought, I had a great event and its good to hear that so many others did. SamH

How was your Edinburgh Trial?
I told Paul to be careful on the Edinburgh so that he could enter the Wakefield PCT the day after, these youngsters don't listen!

ReplyDeleteif the Troll is too boring for you Stuart , I've got a nice VW Buggy I'll swap you , that should up the entertainment level ; ]
