Peugeot 205 preparation

I am currently using a 1360cc Peugeot 205 for PCT events and would like to raise the suspension around 50mm front and back. Can anyone offer some advice on how this could be achieved?

My second question is, Is there a preferred method for upgrading the differential?

Thanks Nigel

  1. I'm considering a 205 as well, is there a reason to jack up the back end to the extreme other than to clear deep ruts?

I have heard an argument for hydrolastics being jacked solid but 205s?

  2. You will be able to lift the rear by 50mm by adjusting the rear torsion bar, That is straight forward if a bit if a faff about at times, but defiantly doable. For the front ??? none too sure what the right approach will be maybe look at Spacers of some kind on the strut that may be possible.

A googled link here on the rear axle job, Fair enough this is for the 306 but same sort of set up, it should give you the general idea.http://www.306gti6.com/forum/showthread.php?id=80349&page=1

  3. on the front you could try longer springs from a 405 and/or perhaps use rubber spring assisters (that you can put on a cars rear springs for when you are towing a caravan) and on the back yes do the torsion bars and/or make spacers to go between the rear beam mounts and the chassis.

differential - are you allowed an LSD ? if so then quaife, gripper or tran-x, if you aren't then theres at least one member on this forum that can build you one :)

  4. rhodesey - i have often wondered about how much benefit there is from jacking the rear higher than the front. its more about keeping weight forward than ground clearance as once you adjust the torsion bars to get a bit extra height on the rear, theres already more ground clearance at the rear, the low point is always the sump guard...

  5. Hi rhodesey, I am looking to raise the rear end aswell as the front, just to give a bit more ground clearance. On my last event, on the rutted sections the sump guard was rubbing on the ground, friction that you dont need!

  6. Hi prefect1172,
If I go down the adjusting the torsion bar route, the link you attached is going to be very useful. Thanks very much for you suggestions.

  7. Hi James,
    Congratulations on your Northern win!
I was thinking about using longer Peugeot springs but was'nt sure on which ones fitted. Do you know if all the 405 springs are the same length and spring rate?
I might get some spacers made for the rear, this sounds like it might me simpler that adjusting the torsion bar!
Thanks very much for the suggestions

I think they'd all prefer to use a quaife, but we won't let them will we?

  10. here's a guide to lowering the rear of the car by adjusting the torsion bars:

    http://www.205gtidrivers.com/articles/b-rearaxlelowering.html

just move the splines the other way and hey presto theres about 40-50mm.

Above that, spacers between the ream beam mounts and the chassis.

  11. Nigel,

For the front you could consider adding spacers to the top mount of the struts and increasing the length of the studs. My local fab shop has a template to plasma cut for the inserts. I have 8x10mm inserts in each side and uprated the 3 tops mount studs to 13mm. Add a strengthening plate to the top and your ready.

On a cautionary note, if your going to insert spacers as I have make sure you add 'check straps' to stop the front suspension over extending and locking your drive shafts. I have some pics if you want some and could even get the spacers for you as well.

  13. Lee,

Thanks for this suggestion. Did you modify standard Struts to carry out this mod? Yes I would be interested in having a look at your revised suspension and check strap pictures. Perhaps you could let me know your tel number and I could give you a call, or you can call me on 01234 855508.

    Thanks
