Marlin Roadsters and class 7

In the engine list for marlin class 7 cars,  there is  no mention of the alffa twin cam engine?
They were a common fit back in the day, even the factory demonstrators were alfa powered apparently, so why omit them from the regulation.?

  1. You need to read M.6.4.1 and M.6.4.2 on the Marlin spec sheet together. If my memory serves me correctly ... the only reason that the Alfa engine is omitted from M.6.4.1 is because we were unable to find one to measure the standard engine position to give a dimension for M.6.4.2.

There was always a tacit understanding that if anyone wished to trial an Alfa-engined car it would be inspected by one of the ACTC Technical Committee, the relevant dimension measured, and the spec sheet amended. That was, as far as I am aware, the original intention, but Pete Hart will have the up-to-date information.

  2. Actually, there weren't common back in the day - that's an urban myth. The only known Alfa engined Marlin is/was the (one) factory demonstrator.

  3. I Have a alfa engined marlin, Been built like that from first reg in mid 80s from what i can tell. Do not think it is the demonstrator, but i do not know for sure could be i suppose. I thought they were much more common than that.
That sounds positive Andrew b thank you.Maybe i should away and get this car measured up Before i do anything too radical to it.Will there be a appropriate scrutineer ACTC TECH official at the Ilkley trial if so i can take it up to that to be checked. I had not planned to use this engine, but it is a light powerful enough engine right enough.

  5. Liam -

Just a few points. If yours is an early Marlin, is it a Mark 1 (Triumph-based) or a Mark 2 (Marina-based), or even a hybrid? If a Mark 1 or hybrid then it is very unlikely to be competitive in trials and, as the old saying goes, if you wanted to go there I wouldn't have started from here.

Having the car measured is not a straightforward exercise, for reasons too tedious to explain here but mainly to do with establishing exactly what is the "vertical line through the centre axis ...", and it is not a five minute job. Certainly the Ilkley scrutineer wouldn't have the time to do it - remember that Class 7 entrants "self-certify" that their car complies with the spec.sheet.

But, if you are really serious, you can contact Pete directly through the ACTC website.

  6. I have a mk 1 and two mk 2s the Alfa engined car is a mk 2 All Marina based roadster it was built with this alfa a 2 litre from its reg in 1984 i am 99% on that but don't know if the original builder is still with us let alone his whereabouts , I was going to fit a b series but In fairness to the alfa engine in standard form for outright horsepower it out performs any other engine on that class 7 list and it is all aloy too so supose i have to at least give it a try. will get in touch and get it measured up or whatever is needed to get it included in the regulation, not just for my use as such but for anyone who wants to hunt out a alfa twin cam and campaign it. Thanks all for advice.
