Donington Park

Hi all

Following on from Simon's outing in his Class 8 buggy. I, and a couple of friends, will be off to the Donington Park Historic GP on the 19th & 20th May. At 」20 for a prebooked weekend ticket and the chance to see the factory Auto Unions proving irrestiable.

More info on www.vscc.co.uk events and Donington Park Weekend.

The Escort managed to sustain some damage during the enforced off season while away getting the MOT and brakes rebuilt. Somebody decided it would be a good idea to run over the car while parked out on the road. The bonnet and boot lid just received foot prints but the roof had been jumped on. Fortunately David Heale has removed the dents in the roof but a couple of very small creases remain. As it happened over the Easter weekend on Saturday night and the police would not come to look at it until Tuesday three days later, reason being that it was a bank holiday... Never mind I got a nice little book about being a "victim" of crime.

Anyway Donington looks good and the weather looks like it might be reasonable. Good job as we shall be under canvas!

  1. Well the racing was good. Auto Union were stunning and also included the Donington Collection prixed 1939 1.5 Tripoli car. 1937 C-type V16 supercharged sounded great. The Audi Sport S1 SWB Quattro was driven hard along with the '99 and 2000 Le Mans car. An 720bhp Audi 90 ISMA machine looked and sounded fabulous. Wastegate banging and popping on the over run. A varity of vintage cars filled the air with Castrol R and methanol. The motorbike racing was fast and furious Manx Nortons to the fore although most seemed to be sporting belt drive from the crank to the gearbox. ERAs, Morgan 3 wheelers with big JAP V twin power and my favourites the Fraser Nash which included the 1932 Fraser Nash Nurburg of Dick Smith, which I have always thought is a stunning car. Also the circuit now sports spectator banking on the inside of the circuit which it is possible to park your car. The slopes covered with reclaimed road black top broken up. The steepest section proved no problem complete with restart but the attempts by others proved entertaining with run up. Good Weekend! And it did not rain on us - even better!!! Mark

  2. Sounds good Mark. I would have liked the Morgan 3 wheelers. btw - who was driving the Audi? I know Guy Smith who drives with Steffan Johannsson in the Gulf sponsored car. Guy is also driving a Bentley at Le Mans with Martin Brundle.   Hope the locals are staying off your roof!   Michael

  3. Hi Michael Perry McCarthy was driving the 99 Le Mans car and was easily the quickest. A variety of Audi employees seems to be driving the rest. The driver of the 2000 Le Mans car lost it under braking for the chicane at the end of the lap.  The V16 Auto Union pilot got that very very sideways once onto the start finish straight. The peddler of the S1 Sport Quattro was travelling quick enough to keep the tyres squealing into through and on the exit of all of the corners but I do not know who he/she was. One of V twin Morgans (Gary Caroline) won a handicap race from scratch and there must have been ten cars on the final straight with the Moggie weaving through and getting the last under power to the line. Awesome sound on open pipes! Mark
