Camel

I am passengering Simon Groves on my first Cornish one day trial. I plan to post live hill by hill reports over at http://spaces.msn.com/members/classicalgas/

  2. Adrian - sorry but I didn't get your message until I got back home Monday evening. Its a long way for us and we left before noon on Saturday. I enjoyed my Camel some stuff over at www.classictrials.co.uk and here on the photo Album. It was certainly a very tough trial but apart from the first section in Hustyn Woods I didn't think it was rough. We didn't drag our diff on more than a couple of sections so it wasn't that rutted either but bot were those hills steep and with the weather not much grip either.   I had a wonderful time before and after the trial as well. Simon and I stayed with a whole group in a chalet and had a couple of great nights. Not only were they better triallers but I was thoroughly outclassed in the drinking department as well. Don't want to say to much about the conversation as some of it might be Libelous but lets just say we restructured the classes, changed some of the rules, reorganised the MCC and I now know who has got a dodgy diff in their car! Seriously, thanks for having me along guys. Fantastic.   Well done to Paul for winning the event and Ian for adding the Wheelspin to go alongside his triple in the Trophy Cabinet. Fantastic result for the 3rd trialling generation of the Davis family.   Thanks to all you who followed the event on my live blog reports at http://spaces.msn.com/members/classicalgas/ I had 197 accesses on Sunday. Only thing is you have encouraged me to do it again!   How was your Camel?   Michael

  3. Well Michael, if you know who has got a "dodgy diff" perhaps you'd be prepared to tell John Blakeley (in confidence of course) so that he can test the car and find out if the diff really is dodgy or whether this is yet another of those urban myths?   Andrew

  4. Andrew - That late night conversation apart I think many of us have seen cars speeding up hills with both wheels spinning away!   Michael

  5. if you did tell the scrutineer which diff you thought was iffy he would very unlikeley without striping the transmision to find out ,easy on a escort but on something like a golfe quite a major job , but having said that I think the time has come to insist on some sort of first 3 and random selection to have a strip down and inspection  which should be part of the licence requirment ,this would take away some of concerns over diffs

Hmmm, madatory strip down & inspections.   And are we all happy that entry fees should go up to the £70-£100 mark to cover the cost of this?  I think not...   Of course if someone is unhappy, there is always the protest mechanism but no one ever seems prepared to do this.  They just prefer to mutter in the dark.   Back to the real world, I thought the Camel was a great end to the season.   Micheal, I hope, now knows what we all meant when we said  "Tough but never rough".   Full marks to all the organisers.   As last man on the road, I did Church Park Woods 2 in the dark, and climbed it for the first time.   maybe not being able to see the full awefulness was a good thing,  or may be it was the thought of having to reverse back down in the dark spured me on.

  7. Simon - Yes I was really surprised. I had thought it would be really rough but it wasn't and not too rutty either. There were only two sections that Simon's (Groves) Escort dragged its diff and those were the two we cleaned. I suppose the only one I would say was rough was the first one in Hustyn Woods but like most saloons we didn't get round the corner so never got to the rough bit. But boy were all those hills steep.   Michael   PS - I hadn't meant to start a dodgy diff debate but now I have will throw my hat into the ring. Its the same as using an over-sized engine in Class 4, which is even harder to police than a diff. If you want to win so bad that you need to cheat then go ahead. You may get lots of awards but you won't get any pleasure from them. On the other hand if people are bad mouthing you and you think its un-justified then let the mechanical experts in your class take your car apart and see the diff, barrells or whatever. Me - I'm just looking forward to getting my life sorted out so I can start driving again.

I was thinking more along the lines of making the compeditor responsible for the strip down ,under the watchfull eye of the scrutineer ,I for one would like our sport to be seen to be fair and no room for complaint . I realy enjoyed the camel although I must have woke up on the afternoon sections as my morning run was not that lively,thanks to all involved
