If my memory serves me correctly then John Symonds-Hodge used to trial a Ford Pop back in the 60's and 70s along with the similar cars of Redmile-Gardner and Ken Malin. I own the Malin car and I am sure that all the other two Pops still exists and are still used in trials. Ken
Dont know the history of Ken Malin but in the late 60s John Simmons-Hodge, Keith Redmile-Garner and Angus Stewart ran as 'The Three Pops' team in some MCC trials. In those days most of the Pops ran with reversed VW wheels on the back fitted with 'town and country' type tyres which were still allowed. I believe David Childs still competes with John's old car and I last saw the ex Redmile-Garner car on the Exeter about three years ago, I think the registration began with WXT or similar. I wonder if Angus's pop will return to the hills one day? Stuart Cairney
simmons-hodge is a trialling name from the past,i am married to the son of john simmons-hodge he had a pop 598 BMX we have seen pics of it still running
I have some great memories of the 'The Three Pops' team on the Exeter attempting Simms in the late 60s early 70s Iam told I first 'watched' at Simms with my Dad at the age of 5. Happy Days ! Greg.....
John also competed with other Pops, and on the 1965 Derbyshire was with Mrs M Woodall and F Manyweathers as team Pick of the Pops gaining a first and two 3rds. I recall Mr Manyweathers Pop being bright yellow, does that car still exist? Cliff
"Mrs M Woodall" is of course my aunt Margaret Woodall first female Triple winner; That Pop was broken up in the early seventies to keep a Dellow going. The registration number was MNK something or other.
is there any way i can find out more details of john simmons-hodge, and his pop , and pics would be good my husband was 12 when he died and he only has 1 pic of his dad in the pop, any help thanks
I competed in the 1964 Lands End trial and was running 5 cars behind the a Pop which according to the entry list was entered by F L Simmons-Hodge. I have a copy of a report that appeared in I think Autocar magazine that contains a picture of the Pop on Station Lane, which was the first hill that year and driven before daybreak. The picture is therefore quite dark, but the registration is just visible and appears to be 596 BMX.
