Rose joints.

I have always had very serious doubts about the use of Rose/Heim/spherical rod-end joints on road going cars ever since seeing the breakage of one during an Ebworth Trial. Had it sheared on the road then the consequences of the total suspension collapse are obvious.

Full of very practical advice and safety measures for special builders - and unlike our SVA test it seems to avoid nonsense such as 'not using a steering wheel with holes in the spokes - in case you get your finger stuck'.

In Australia they have a total ban on Rose joints being fitted to road going specials :-

Heim joints are not to be used as a suspension or steering component - other than as a steering intermediate shaft guide bush.

Dellow Tyres.

I have competed this year in class O in my 1951 Dellow which has a 100E engine and Willment OHV conversion. Neither of these were fitted as standard in 1951. All other running gear is original. If I had not entered in class O I would have been in class 8. I think the car would have been outclassed by more modern machinery and would have been under far greater stress on the re-starts. I have managed so far to get by with only one broken axle. I don't want to go to the extent of changing either engine or axle so have been quite happy to stay in class O and enjoy my outings. The problem now is the Edinburgh where I want to try class 8 and my Michelin X Taxi tyres must go. Has anyone got any sensible suggestions as to the best tyres to use as I am completely out of touch these days. Tyre size at present 175 x 16 on original Ford wheels.

Liege kit for sale

There is a very well specified Liege kit for sale on eBay. This is a genuine car, in need of finishing which, unfortunately, the owner is unable to do now.
Anyone buying this rolling chassis, which has everything needed for completion plus a bit more, would be getting a bargin in terms of acquiring a Liege.

All the best,

Raising Beetle rear suspension

On the double-jointed Beetle rear suspension (as used on Porsche 924) what is the practical maximum it can be raised?
I would like to gain about 3.5 maybe 4 inches. At this height is there a need to do away with the small oval lower limit stop - and/or modify the spring plate itself?

I'm aware of the spline sizes to enable a precise setting.

Whilst searching the net I found a frightening article on lowering Beetle rear suspension. The owner (for which read non-engineer) had hacked away nearly half the depth of the spring plate. It might have enough residual strength .... but he had notched it with a sharp-angled corner! The perfect stress-raiser to initiate a fatigue failure. Lord help us.
Oh, and he was using ordinary grease on the rubber bushes ...........

Official Fuel Tax Petition

Please read and seriously consider actioning the following,

Cheers,
Simon

Official e-Petition from the British People to HM Government to lower the duty on fuel.

At 50.35p a litre, the duty paid on diesel in the UK is the highest rate in Europe, where the average level is 22.7p a litre. Did you know that around two-thirds of the price of petrol is tax? For every 짙50 you spend at the pumps, you only get 짙17 of petrol. And don't forget that VAT is charged fuel tax too - a tax on a tax. Why should an essential like fuel be taxed at several hundred %, when heating fuel is only taxed at 5%? Below is a link to the official government petition aiming to lower fuel tax

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Lowerduty30/

Sign it, you all complain about high fuel prices,
so do something about it!

To 'sign' the petition via email you need an email address and a home address, THAT'S IT !!!!!

Pass this on to EVERYONE you know, even if they don't drive yet, one day they will and they WILL complain about fuel prices.

New ACTC Hon Secretary

I have recently taken on the job of Secretary for the ACTC.

I have now just 8 persons, where my eMail did not bounce back who have not replied to me. Please check your eMail and reply to me if my message is in your in box. Please help me to get the ACTC data base bang up to date.
My eMail address is in my members profile.
Thanks for your help.

Cannon chassis jig

I have purchased the chassis jig on which Mike Cannon built all his trials cars. Retrieved it last week with the generous help of Ian Moss.

By a happy coincidence, when I marshalled on the recent Stroud Motor Club 'Moss Motors Trial', Nigel Moss brought along a superb photo of Mike Cannon and Stirling Moss in the Cannon workshop. They are standing in front of a car under construction for Stirling and in the background just happens to be the chassis jig.

The jig is naturally quite basic (as are the cars!) but it raises several possibilities :-

1/  Chassis repairs whilst clamped to the genuine jig.
2/  Purchasers of cars that are thought or claimed to be genuine Cannons - can check dimensions with me to see if the car is genuine.
3/ In the future new chassis may be produced. I understand from DVLA that if the chassis is a replica (and having the original jig satisfies the DVLA 100%) and the major components are pre-1972 as per Cannon spec. -  then nil-VED status is legitimately available.
I also understand from the grapevine that DVLA are starting to weed out the - " incidences of fraudulent tax-evasion on hot-rods, specials and 4x4's".

I've been working for a while now on setting up a Cannon web page and hopefully that will be up and running this summer.

Marlin - Alloy Wheels

Hi there.  I have for sale a set of four wheels/tyres.  They will fit Marina axle/hubs (not van).  They are Fox Racing Evo alloys, 15", and are currently fitted with 195 x 55 tyres.  The wheels are brand new and the tyres are merely scrubbed.  I can email pics if you are interested.  I figured that I would offer them here first just in case anyone may be interested.  Other than that I will eventually place them on eBay.  If you would like pics, email me on: bbeech50@btinternet.com

Price ?, but I imagine around £200.  Give me a call on 07850 815946 if you are interested

Lands End Centenary Pictures,

I have put the pictures I took on the event at

http://grahamwhiting62.fotopic.net/c1520505.html

there are over 200 pictures and I think I got nearly everyone who was still going at Windout. Missed a couple whilst changing camera batteries and some had gone through before I got there.
