I see number 25 in the Ilkley Trial entry list is Tiff Needell and Tom Ford on a Ural in Class D. So it looks like something coming up on Fifth Gear! Lots of TBA's about the bike but I would have though its likely to be a bit heavy.
Looking at their website http://www.ural-motorcycles.com/index.php?products I see they do Sidecar Drive models.
They are running at the back of the bikes so I guess early car numbers like Stuart and Dudley should get top see them perform. Here is the Ilkley entry list http://www.ilkleymotorclub.org.uk/Classic/entries.htm
btw watch out for trialling in Practical Classics as their team were out in force on the Bovey the other week.
Please escuse me for being thick here but whats class D?

ReplyDeleteFrom memory, Urals have sidecarwheel drive
ReplyDeleteare two wheel drivesidecarsallowed
There was a Ural with sidecar that competed on the Northern three or four years ago. That had drive to the chair but didnt appear to make much difference to it. It looked a very heavy beast there as mentioned. It was painted with full camoflague so may well still be running around the North Lakes forest and no one knows!!!!
ReplyDeleteJohn - As I am sure you gave worked our from the other posts Class D is Chairs. It will be interesting for Scrut John if the Ural has sidecar drive. I followed Andrews link and can find no mention of it not being allowed. I think Myke is right about them being big and heavy. I wouldn't fancy having to get back down again when they fail amongst the tress on the steep part of Sword Point 3. How are they going to get it back down?
ReplyDeleteAs far as presenters go I think these two are the best and I'm looking forward to be entertained on the TV.
Under ACU rules, SCWD is not allowed, but the MCC let a Ural run in Class O on the Lands End either last year or the year before. The Northern Trial Ural was also a Class O entry. Urals are primarily military machines and are therefore built strong and heavy to withstand the rigours of squaddies. This weight and the fact that it is a "normal" sidecar that does lend itself to the gymnastics required of chair passengers plus competition from both Yoshi Adams & John Hind means that I think this entry comes under the category of "you can do anything you like, so long as you don't win".
ReplyDeleteI hope Tiff's going to take the gun off first. Otherwise, marshals look out!!
ReplyDeleteCould make sure he doesn't get marked down as failing any sections!
ReplyDeleteThey're planning to broadcast in June. Quite sensibly Ilkley don't want to publicise Fifth Gear's involvement any further at this stage as they don't want sections to become too thronged with Fifth Gear fans etc. Apparently Tiff hasn't ridden a combination before..
ReplyDeleteMonday 15th June at 8pm. Repeated at 11am on Saturday 20th.It's not flagged in the Radio Times listing as the main feature of the show...
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to it. I see that the preview for the new 5th gear series includes a short bit of them going through the ford at the bottom of Watergate
ReplyDeleteDuncan kindly emailed me this link to the preview http://fwd.five.tv/videos/coming-up-show-2
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I hadn't watched any motoring programs on TV for years. Nice to see trialling on the box but not sure if the program was good for the sport. Shame they talked about Green laning on Footpaths and Bridleways.
ReplyDeleteYes, shame about the green lane comment. I don't think it's done us any harm but not sure it really helps either. Compared to the good feature they did on the Exeter, the focus here seemed to be on the presenters mucking about rather than on the event.
