I would like to know When, Where and Who, oh and all about the car as well. I know some of the answers but not all so you could be adding to the history of the sport! This is a different type of question to the first one. I don't plan to respond until Boxing day evening, leaving respondents to confirm or challenge their co-competitors answers!
All being well if you Click Here a bigger version will appear.
So - When, Where, Who and What
Oh - A certain person is banned from this question. You know who you are!!
Clue - Most of you have been up it
ReplyDeleteCarlie Thinks its Bamford
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas
Pete
What? I think its a Riley Falcon, tho' I'm no expert on these saloons.
ReplyDeleteAs for the when, its interesting to note, if you look at the car closely, that it carries no competition numbers. Therefore it suggests that its a Factory test session, or maybe a magazine "road" test.
From David Alderson:-
ReplyDeleteI think that’s the top of Beggars Roost,
It’s a Riley 9hp saloon but I’m not sure which model, Adelphi? Monaco? Kestrel? Falcon?
Guess at 1934-36
From John Hammill:-
ReplyDeleteThe Riley was registered in 1936 and has a 1496 cc engine, if it helps with the identification. And the year is 1936 or later.
Pete/Carlie - a little closer to home ;-)
ReplyDeleteIs it Ubley Woods? Maybe just after the war.
ReplyDeleteThere we go! Well done Jon. Its the top of what was called Ubley Drove, now known as Travers on The Allen Trial. To the right of the picture is today's Ubley Woods sections. Thanks to Andrew Brown for the picture and the question.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the car and the occasion. Neither Andrew or I know the answer to that but from what John, Simon & David say its a Riley and probably wasn't taken during a trial.
Carlie Hart has written a nice history of The Allen Trial http://www.bristolmc.org.uk/History/the_allen.htm
ReplyDeleteThat caught us out!!
ReplyDeleteIt could well be an Allen Trial, The 1946 event used Ubley Drove and the Allen was for non-sports cars hence a saloon. R W Barton entered a Riley in 1938.
It was a closed to club Trial/Social event so they may not have used numbers.
Pete
When Andrew sent me the photo it says 1938 - Michael
ReplyDeleteI believe that the photograph is PreWar so 1938 seems more likely than 1946. So ... Pete ... do you believe that (a) the 1938 Allen used, or could have used, Ubley Drove, and (b) R W Barton entered a Riley, which could have been a saloon, in the 1938 Allen?
ReplyDeleteI have a copy of the report of the Allen in Light Car 27th May 1938.
ReplyDeleteIt does not mention Ubley Drove but was held in the area. It does not say what model Riley Barton entered. But its was for Standard Motor cars not sports. It was also the First Allen as the Trophy was presented to the club in 1938.
Not sure what the track was like prewar but only 3 cleared it in 1946. So perhaps it was a bit severe for the pre war Allen.
