I suppose a type 3 fastback is pushing it a bit? is there any rule which states one has to tackle a section, going FORWARDS? or can one reverse up, providing it's non-stop?
Now then Alastair, you're getting into the naughty side of things !! Regarding reverseing up, back in the (I believe) ' 60's there was a chap who had a mini (possibly a van with removeable rear doors) with a couple of very large spotlights mounted at the back for the nightime sections, who used to do just that. However there are regs in force which prohibit it these days. I am sure someone out there will be able to provide chapter & verse on said competitor and his sucess or otherwise.
Murray, You have seen the car that Simon refers to on Woodmill on the 1969 Guy Fawkes. We were marshalling with Pete Lloyd and I think this was a memorable occasion for two reasons. First it was the day (night in fact) we first met and I belive that was the first time you had seen a trial. We marshalled about half way up Woodmill in the dark and were most surpriswed when behind the battery of lights was this Mini in reverse. We had travelled from Oxford in companywith Den Allen who had to keep waiting for us in his Cortina GT when my 850 Mini first couldn't keep pace everytime the road went uphill and then when we got stopped by the police. Later we marshalled another section in the daylight (in Ebworth Woods) and saw that the red Mini had the boot lid removed and six or seven spotlights mounted on a wood and dexion frame. Michael
Michael, I remember it well. The whole thing was quite an adventure in those days. I also remember a Mr Edkins throwing up a rock when he restarted his VW on Windmill? (not Woodmill?) which hit me on the ear! So who was driving that Mini then? Murray
The trials Mini ace at the time was Roy Chapman but I am sure it wasn't him going backwards on the Guy Fawkes. It will come. btw - I know the driver of the type 2 in triple, and the hill, just got to get the year!! Murray - if we aren't going to see JAZ again why not bring the Golf out and show Dave, Paul, Mike, Adrian etc how it is done. Still time to get an entry for the Exeter. Alan Cundy got his Golf up Simms last year. There's a challenge for you. Michael
Yes, I remember Roy Chapman - did he have a pick-up? I'm sure somebody did, I can't have imagined it surely? Me too! Never seen a picture before, but the episode resides in VW motorsport history. 1957? Perhaps '56? If the Golf survives the 061 & Preston rallies plus the "airfield" bash I'll be entering the Cotswold Clouds for a bit of a laugh! Then the car gets a 2 litre conversion. JAZ is scheduled for refurbishment & update next summer and will return to the hills this time next year. It's writing now, so it must be done!
according to Simon Woodhall....the rules say "same configuration!"...hence no V6 escorts....and I can't put a fwd ohc motor into the Skoda rapid! so unless you can find evidence of Peugeot actually selling a twin-cam 205.....it's a single cammy job, or class 7....which really can't be a bad thing if the benefits outweigh the extra restarts? like rwd mk3 escorts?
Changing the cylinder head has nothing to do with model ranges. Engine tuning is free, so fitting a different cylinder head to a block that is legal for the car is perfecctl;y acceptable. BTW rwd mk3 Escorts in class 3 - I'll tell you how, but only offline
Mk1 & Mk2 Golf in the same model range? My instinct is to say NOT, as the two chassis are fundamentally different, and if you take it to the FIA papers, where manufacturers declare model ranges, you will find that they are probably not the same range there, but we grass roots people are flexible, and I would be open to persuassion. Curiously enough, Mk2 Golf and Mk2 Jetta are the same FIA model range, but Mk3 Golf & Vento are different FIA model ranges even though Jetta & Vento are just Booted Golfs
Hi Mark, The car is still a Mk1, no Mk2 bits at all. The engine has been liberated from a VW Passatt. As to what I would like to get my hands on would be a late TDI gearbox., please Simon.
And the Mk3, Mk4 & Mk5 ?

ReplyDeletethank heavens for Dexion...most of my cars have contained a fair proportion of the useful stuff........

ReplyDeleteFurther to Simon's reply the 205 was sold with the twink head in France I believe. Same motor in the Citroen BX GTi 16v.
ReplyDeletesimon thanks for clearing up that argument as soon as I get a diff that lasts more than one section I will be back
ReplyDeleteSo is the Mk1 the same model range as the Mk2 ? Murray cant wait to see the golf on the hills. Which model within the range have you got?.
ReplyDeleteHi Dave Haven't you got most of a Mk2 in the front of your already anyway? Out of interest which parts are you after? Mark
