My Land's End

I have spent most of the day sending a few images to the Land's End album. Amazing how slow the "old" dial up connection is. Most of them are the right way up, I will modify errors when I return home.
Unfortuneatly I witnessed more potentially serious incidents in one afternoon than I have witnessed since watching my first trial at Bluehills in 1970.
Two outfits, 71 and 73, overturning, two cars overturning, 529 and 250?, and one solo demolishing some observers/spectators. None of these incidents involved excessive speed, dangerous riding or driving, but all had the potential for serious injury, or worse.
Luckily all involved walked away unhurt, but no doubt have a few bruises today (Sunday).
I have included images of the 2 sidecars and 2 cars on pages 5 and 10 in a series of images. Take a look at them and remember both of the cars have the occupants still inside!! I have only included these images because I think it is time to think .- SAFETY.
I was unable to stay after 5.00pm and therefore was unable to get images of the last cars.

  1. John - The Red Dellow is Mark Hayward in EVG - You will see it has Aero Screens. Thats because a long time ago it was turned over and Mark never replaced the windscreen. Glad he's OK - Michael

  2. Perhaps we should add the car that we saw on the junction of the M25/M3 that ended up on its roof! And that was without  any banks or 24 hr drives. I am amazed that all were o.k at Blue Hills.I must say that people have been critical about my roll bar, however if i puchased any other car for competition it would be a very early addition to the equipment. P.S. The car on the M25 was flat down to the dashboard on the Driver side. The drivers condition unknown. So much for the strenghth of the modern car.

  3. Superb photos John - very many thanks! It cheered me up to see them (inc an excellent one of me!) as I somehow managed to mess up a "cut and paste" of my own photos from my digi camera onto my hard disc. They all appeared to have transferred but Windows Explorer kept crashing when trying to access the files and, after a reboot, the folder on the HDD was empty. Various recovery and unerase attempts with Nortons has failed and my attentions will turn now to the camera's XD card. Anyone know of any utilities that might recover the files from there please?

BTW, the overturned or overturning cars and sidecars looked very scary - really really glad to know everyone walked away!

I was still very sleepy this morning when I was startled to heart a report on Radio Devon that a motorcyclist had gone over the edge of Countisbury Hill and had been airlifted to hospital. Turns out it happened at 6pm on Saturday so I cannot think it was connected to the MCC in any way. However, for someone who suffers from vertigo and probably wouldn't be able to ride Countisbury in daylight (bad enough on a moonlit night), it hasn't done my confidence any good! Hope the young man in question makes a full and speedy recover.

BTW, anyone know how many motorcycle heroes cleaned Riverton?

Rumour had it that a car shed a tyre in the section and held up the trial for over an hour as recovery was difficult - I can believe that!

  4. I spent the day at Blue Hills, and probably have some sort of Photograph of every competitor, who went through Blue Hills before 6:00 pm.  So far I have only sorted the Cars, but there are lots of Bikes and Combinations to come.  I also went to the Start at Plusha, so there are some photos there too.  Here are the links to the three galleries I have set up so far, Start, http://hoits.smugmug.com/gallery/1371597/1/64714529 Blue Hills 1, http://hoits.smugmug.com/gallery/1371570/1/64713461 Blue Hills 2, http://hoits.smugmug.com/gallery/1371485/1/64711739   I will add captions later.  If anyone wants Print Quality copies, or to see if I've got a decent photo of a competitor, let me know through this board, Classical Gas, or posting comments on my smugmug site.  I am happy to send them electronically free.   I was at the top of Blue Hills 2 when one of the Austin Sevens overturned.  Scary, but the martshalls were very quick to right the car, and the car continued to the top of the Hill, rapidly followed by the passenger, so I presume both were OK.  The only concern is would the marshalls have ben able to do that with say a Marlin?   Dave Cook

  5. It is a bit sad replying to your own questions but this may help someone else.

It seems that my "deleted" photos were still on the XD card despite not being able to "see" them in Windows Explorer. I found a utility called O&O UnErase 1 on a recent PCW freebie CD which promised to "Easily recover deleted files".

This it did in remarkably painfree fashion. It was interesting to see all the old photos on the card many of them now quite old which, as far as I was concerned, were long gone!

I have really enjoyed looking through the, literally, hundreds of photos of the LE that have been posted up by fellow members. Thanks again to all concerned. I only just managed to get the lawns mowed before the missus got home ;o)
