Spark Plug Advice please

I am getting close to starting my newly rebuilt engine so I need to find some suitable spark plugs. It is an E93A engine with Aquaplane head and twin SUs. An old Tuning book suggests Lodge RL47 or RL49 but I don't suppose there is much chance of finding 4 of these! WWW.Sparkplugs co.uk have suggested NGK B8EGP or B9EGP which I believe may be race orientated - so what do you guys use and where do I purchase them?

Thanks    Tony

  1. Hi Tony,   Have you checked out the Dellow Tech site?   Cheers

  2. I have used NGK plugs..the numbers are at present unknown, as it's dark and wet outside...and the torch has just faded......however, what I HAVE used are special sparkplug spacers, which together with the rather 'long-nosed' plugs, allow the electrodes to poke further down the plug 'ole into the chamber...the originals are rather short nosed, and the sparky bit gets a tad shrouded....also, by using a longer nose, there is a [slight....ever so slight] gain in compression.   I'm not sure whereabouts relative to the valves or piston, the Aquaplane head places the plug.   On my sidevalver..or flatheader if colonial terms are to be used.....I run an 8HP head on the 10hp.....and the plug sits over the valves...hence a check for clearances is needed for the above trick.......however, I have had some alloy heads with the plugoils centred over the piston crown, or thereabouts.....in fact, I HAVE considered doing a spot of drilling and welding, and trying for a  twin-plug head!   I'll have a look outside in the morning for the plug no's.....providing I haven't fitted 4 different ones!

  3. I've run an E93A / Aquaplane set up in my Dellow for 35 years now on Champion N-3 without trouble. Aquaplane used to recommend Lodge 2HLN. I believe the NGK equivalent is B9E.  Try E-bay, I just turned up a couple of auctions ending today!  regards, Dave Haley

  4. Spark Plugs

For a standard 100E, 10hp engine or with a 8 hp head I use the same plugs as fitted to my VW 1300 Beetle, That is Bosch W8A or the NKG BP6ES. The correct plug is Champion L10 or the modern version L86C

I have had the extended nose plugs touch the valve causing a very hard to trace missfire so since then have used normal nosed plugs

For the 100E aquaplane head I use Champion N5 ( same as a early Mini ) or the same thing in Bosch or NKG

  5. Thanks for all the info. Went to Collectors Car Parts near Heathrow who cross referenced the Lodge plugs to Champion N3's but unfortunately they didn't have any left. Ended up buying some Autolite AG901 which, according to the charts are an alternative - interestingly they do have the word 'Racing' on the plug - time will tell! However at 짙2 per plug it will be an interestong experiment.

  6. I run BR8ES NGK plugs in my 100E aquaplane head with a blower. The best place to find a good selection is a motorcycle shop. had the miss fire problem and have now found some old stock Lodge FE30 which are shorter reach. The big problem now adays with unleaded that if the pug fould up it is virtually impossible to clear it through light running of the engine, you hacve to remove it so I always carry a spare set.
