I am planning to do the Lands End but need some 15 or 16 inch tyres which will grip, our tyres we currently run are worn out and we they are no longer available. firestone 560 seem popular or vredestien -but I do not know which style of these is the best- we are running them on a Mk5 buckler.

Hi David, I am using the Firestone F560 15" on the rear of my Liege and what a difference it makes in mud with radial tyre's. However I did get two punctures on the March Hare last week experimenting with different pressures. (Does anybody know where to buy 15" heavy duty tubes from please?) Fellow Liege owner Mark E has the newly approved Firestone ANS 16" which look very good. Simon R has the Coker 16" and has had some very good results with them. Please note the Two Size front to rear tyre rule when you buy new rear tyres. e.g.(175x16 on rear axle will need 155 radial or a 550 crossply fitting to the front axle. ACTC website (rules 4.5) Check out Liege site for more info. Cheers and Good luck on the Lands End Steve
ReplyDeleteI asked the same sort of question today at a sporting trial and this is the gist of the answer I was given. When the competitors in the midlands and south settled on a standard tyre they chose Firestones but the northerners chose Vredesteins. When the northern gang competed in the south it was said that they had the unfair advantage of better tyres. The rest is of no consequence but to answer your question, it might be worth going with Vredesteins. Apparently they take a little while, say three events, to soften and get a good wrinkle on the walls, but the grip is said to be better and when they settle in, much better. If this information is wrong, would someone please tell me as I heard it today from a regular competitor. Best regards to all, Rhodesey
ReplyDeleteCompeting regularly in sporting trials I have experienced both the Firestone F560 and Vredestien Sprint tyres.
ReplyDeleteThey both seem to be similar in grip levels with the Vredestien slightly better when trickling, in some drivers opinion. When we are blasting in sticky mud the Firestones seem to clear the tread a little better. However remember the pressures that we are running on are not really comparible to Classic trials, with us running on anything down to 2psi thus the comment about a few events to soften the tyres so the wrinkle better. The Firestones do seem to be of a slightly stiffer and thus possibly more puncture resistant construction. The strange part being the Firestones tread looks a lot better than the Vredestien.
I do have 2 Firestones that have done an event that I do not need now if you are interested...(based near the NEC) so they have begun to soften up. They are 165 x 15's
Are the Vredesteins you use "Sprint Classic" or "Sprint +" pattern?
