I guess I am my worst enemy here in that I am running 12V negative earth through a starter motor originally designed for 6V positive earth. Perhaps not surprisingly I am experienceing loads of problems! Anyone got any suggestions on how I can use my nice new wiring loom designed for negative earth and an appropriate starter motor. Has anyone got a spare Starter motor anyway within reasonable travelling distance of Maidenhead.
Starter motors of that era don't care if you use positive or negative
ReplyDeleteearth. What problems are you having?

When the motor is on the bench it turns quite slowly, when in the car it just clicks. In both cases the large battery terminal on top of the motor becomes very hot indeed - too hot to touch. Motor has worked in the past and I have had the unit overhauled several weeks ago as the brushes had lost their insulation - welcome any suggestions.
ReplyDeleteHi Tony,
ReplyDeleteI see your message and I do in fact have a spare
E93 starter motor. Condition unknown. I'm in Cornwall.
Cheers,
Roger.
That sounds like either a poor connection on the terminal or a shorted
ReplyDeletewinding. If your lights dim a lot when you try to start the car it is
more likely a shorted winding.

Hi Roger As luck would have it, I shall be visiting Cornwall this weekend for a birthday celebration - staying in a place called St Keverne near Helston - are you near there? Tony
ReplyDeleteHi Tony,
ReplyDeleteI'm in Wadebridge about seven miles off your direct
route should you be interested. I don't know the condition of it but it span
quite readily the last time I tried it, about 10 years ago. As for price, make
me an offer.
Cheers,
Roger.
Hi Roger I have sent you a note direct to your own email address - hope we can contact each other this weekend. Tony
