E93A Rear Axle Rebuild
The nice weather on Saturday persuaded me to take the Tornado out for a run. A recent visit to a rolling road had made the engine far more flexible so I suppose I should have expected something bad to happen! In the lanes above Henley a sharp bang was heard from the rear axle and the wheels locked up. A lift home to collect a trailer followed and on Sunday morning I stripped the rear axle to find the Diff Pinion Gear Shaft in two and several teeth chipped on one of the half shafts. The carrier is also quite badly damaged. Whilst I am aware that Small Fords stock some of the parts needed can anyone recommend a firm that can strip and rebuild the unit - ideally somewhere in the South of England.

tony from your discription of the damage you may have a modifyed pinion ie 4.4 and not 5.3 best check befor you rebuild i do have a few spare bits if needed.
ReplyDeleteTony, seems like a job for Rawson & Rawson Motorsport http://www.rawsonmotorsport.com/services.htm One of our Dellow Register members swears by them. Dave Haley
ReplyDeleteThanks Dave - I have emailed them for some information. Ren5, I have a 4.7 diff and I am not aware of any mods. As part of my investigations this morning, I have been offered a complete torque tube and rear axle set up from a scrapped low mileage Ford 103E. Looking at the diagrams on the Small Fords web site this axle looks to be stronger but are there any other considerations to take into account. If it is a straight swop I am tempted to have a go as the cost is going to be a lot cheaper! Things I am unaware of on the 103E are , will the standard 17 inch wheels fit, diff ratio, length of the torque tube compared to mine.
ReplyDeleteJust to give you an update. I was offered a rear axle & torque tube from a 1958 Ford Pop with just over 28k miles on it - picked it up today - it almost fell out of the chassis but fortunately when it was parked up 30+ years ago all the nuts were coated in diesel. Stripped the axle this evening and found it is a 5.5 diff whereas 'my' diff is a 4.7. Now this may be a naive question as I know that you should always keep the cwp as a set but as the crown wheel on both the 4.7 and the 5.5 both have 33 teeth what is there to stop me using the crown wheel from the 5.5 but mated to the 4.7. As you can see from the photo (hopefully attached) where the broken unit is on the bottom with the 'new' unit at the top, the newer unit is marginally thicker but the length of the drive shafts are identical. Views very welcome!
ReplyDeleteI think I've succesfully added the picture
ReplyDeleteI know nothing of Fords, but VW Diffs all have 8 teeth on the pinion and different numbers of teeth on the crown wheel. Now this means that the teeth on the different crown wheels are a different size as all the crown wheels are the same diameter.
ReplyDeleteI would expect that you have the same problem. Not to mention problems setting the backlash.
It's 30 years since I owned a Pop but I must say I agree with Simon W. The crown wheel gears must be of a different diametral pitch if they sit in the same housing, have the same diameter, and have different numbers of teeth. Do not mix the pinions because they will also,of necessity, have a different dp.(that's a engineering for tooth thickness!) If you do not feel confidant then get a pro. todo it for you.Good luck. John Groves. PS. I used to work for Opperman Gears who made rear axles for London taxies
ReplyDeleteTony, crown wheels and pinions are matched to each other and should never be swapped even if the same ratio. Any Ford 10 axle will 99% of the time be standard ratio of 5.5 to 1. Ford only used this ratio except for 10cwt commercials. You can see a table of axle ratios and gearsets on my website www.dellowregister.co.uk under 'techie bits'. I am based in Pewsey Wilts and usually have an axle or two dismantled. if you are not too far away, you might like to drop by sometime to play. Dave Haley
ReplyDeleteDave - I had already found that chart on the Dellow site - what a fantastic bit of work and very helpful to me. Just spent several days trying to get things to work. I swopped the 4.7 crown wheel from my old axle to the new - fitted it all up and a trial run on the axle stands still gave a disturbing rumble - a nights rest and I thought I would at least try and discover whether the 5.5 crown whhel would fit (I know this is against all advice but what do you do when you can't see any other solution!) - well it fits but as soon as you tighten up the diff casing bolts it locks solid. So this moring its off with the torque tube ( not easy with the body on) and it looks like I am going to have to live with the 5.5 diff.
ReplyDeleteCarl Talbot has emailed me to say he has the possibility to manufacture Trials CWP for the Ford E83W 'heavy axle'.
ReplyDeleteIf 10 orders could be placed he believes he could reach a price of 짙535.
You can post interest here or contact Carl direct via 07931337380, carlrtalbot@btinternet.com
I got a modified transit diff for my class 8 Dellow from Carl and it was a smooth transaction.
