Golf Mk2 - fuel tank guard

I am a newcomer to trials and am currently modifying a VW Golf Mk2 by adding some underside protection. I would appreciate some advice on the best way to protect the fuel tank, which looks quite vulnerable

  1. Hello (sorry don't know your first name).   There are two ways - Guard underneath the tank. In my experience the best material is that ally chequer plate, used with the plain side down. It's very stong and desn't weigh much. Take the tank out and put another one somewhere else. Typically in the spare wheel well. You can get tanks in all sorts of shapes and sizes from Demon Tweeks. My passenger Mike Hayward got a Midget tank for his car. Michael

  2. My initial advice is don't bother! The tank is plastic and is designed to take a fairly violent impact. Just make sure the steel supporting straps are in good condition, if not fit new ones.   Your real concern should be with the front end and the fuel and brake lines underneath. And a guard over the fuel pump/filter is essential too (or move them inside?)   Email me your phone number and I'll call you - this is a subject I'd like to chat over with another Golf owner.   Murray

  3. I have competed in a Mk2 Golf for the past couple of years in both the ACTC championship and all 3 MCC event. As long as you higher the suspension reasonably you will not need to fit a tank guard. I am not aware that my tank has ever grounded out on anything.   However I have protected the fuel pump with a small amount of ally plate as I thought it may be a little more vulnerable.   Hope this helps.
