Hi I am after one of twin SU manifolds for a crossflow as well if there is more than one! I have seen a single 17/8 SU mounted on a modified weber manifold. I think it was on Dave Miller's Escort but not sure. Mark
Just to make you jealous, I have managed to get hold of 2 manifolds in the last few years, both of which are now in use on cars. At the risk of shooting myself in the foot, I will tell you where I got them. The first one I found at the Beaulieu Autojumble circa 1994, after six years searching. I think God had direct intervention in finding this one. I woke up one saturday morning totally bored, too lazy even to swear at next door's cat, when suddenly a message passed through my brain, "go to Beaulieu". 3 hours later, after being on site less than 25 minutes, in the first row of tents, first stall in, there it was, on top of a pile of manifolds, one C/T twin SU manifold. It cost me 짙12.50. I then had great pleasure in telling the stallholder that I would have paid 10 times that amount. The second manifold I only obtained a few months ago, again Big G had a hand in it. Quite often www.ebay.co.uk has manifolds and SU carbs for auction on its Classic car parts site. There was a pre crossflow SU manifold for sale, which I bought just in case it would be useful as a bartering agent for a crossflow manifold. To cut a long story short, when it arrived it turned out to be an Aquaplane twin SU manifold for a crossflow!! I nearly went to church the following Sunday. This one cost me £31. An easy way to search Ebay is to type in SU or manifold in the basic search window. This does mean that you do get a lot of stuff for Su Pollard, but anyone who cannot tell the difference between Su Pollard and SU carbs, really should not be trialling!! The only other problem that I can think of is the carbs. All the manifolds I have encountered either take 11/2 H4 SU's,(not the more common HS4), or 150CD Strombergs. Again these crop up fairly often on Ebay, but a good pair usually command about £150+ for H4 SU's and £50+ for Strombergs. The cost of basic overhaul, new jets and needles etc will probably double this amount. You can of course still buy new carbs from www.burlen.co.uk They are about £400 / £200 a pair with linkages. Good luck in your hunt.
Thanks John EBay here I come. Somewhere, I think I've got a pair of 1 1/2 SU's off a TR2 engine, both with front float chambers, hope I didn't throw them out when I got a TR3 engine.
I have been reading this thread with interest and wonder why you want to fit SU carbs on a Ford engine, what is the benefit? I run a 1700 crossflow in my Troll with twin Delorto 40's and seem to have no problems. In fact once the carbs are propperly set up they need no further adjustments at all and perform well. So why SU's? Stuart Harrold
Hi Stuart For me it is the expense and simple setup. On 40's you have all the different jets etc to get set and the SU just the needle. Much less to go wrong in theory! A bit of me likes the English part of the equation. The manifold however is a different story. I think David Thompson's Troll has twin SU on. Mark
Thanks Mark, thought it might be cost related. However when I last had my engine rebuilt in the summer of 1997 the guy who did it set the car up on a rolling road. He changed a few chokes and jets at minimal cost . The engine runs very well and I have not had to touch the carbs other than clean the air filters in 6 years. So the cost amortised over that time is minimal. SU's always seem to be needing adjustment and do not ever seem to be good on Ford engines. But good luck in your search. Stuart
