Stupid question?

Does anyone know of a source for the stick-on numbers that we're all supposed to have in the middle of our coloured 'class' discs? The old advice used to be to use the numbers used for motorcycle registration plates but, of course, no one produces plates this way any more, at least they don't seem to in Gloucestershire. Any ideas?

  1. I got one recently from Homebase Andrew. They have them under the house numbers section. If you dont have a Homebase near by try B&Q, Focus or something similar. I've also got one before from a small car spares shop and could probably get you one if you want. If' you're out on Sunday or on the Couds I could pass it on then. Giles

  2. I have never put a number in my disc as I have seen
marshals getting mixed up with comp. no.'s and class numbers.
Surely the point of the colour system was to
identify your class without needing a number?

    What does everyone else think?

  3. I hope John Blakeley is reading this, then he can fail Hans at scrutineering on Sunday for not having a number on his disc.!!
It matters less of course for class 8 as they are the only ones with Red discs, but the colour alone does not accurately identify the class in any of the other catergories and some organisers do need to discriminate for tyre pressure and restart purposes.

  4. Simon - A good example was Wooston on the Exeter where class 6 turned left after the restart and class 7 went straight on. - Michael

  5. Places that do accessories for towing still have stocks of self adhesive numbers and letters to make up your own plates (although I believe that's strictly speaking illegal nowadays).  These are just the right size to fit in your coloured circle.   I think Mr Viertel might get in bother for not having his class number in place (especially now he's rejoined the elite in class 4!)  I have seen some regs or final instructions recently (for the Clee Hills?) that specifically stated that discs had to have the class number in place.   Pete

  6. Hi there, If  you are looking for numbers for the coloured discs, have you tried motorcycle Trials dealers? They still have good stocks. If you wish to buy I can supply packs (approx ten in pack)if you want of the small 45mm high ones. Or if you only want a couple send  SAE and you can have two for free. I will be at The Northern Classic Trial and I can bring some with me if this helps any of you.    Steve

  7. Ref your point Michael, upon the MCC events, the onus is upon the competitor to undertake what challenges/restarts that are require for their class. The observer should only record their competition number and what they see. It is not up to the observer to decide what class any vehicle is in and what they should be doing - they might not be correct.
I was asked to aquire a B&W stick on number plate, which I did from my local sign manufacture. My first request was rejected as being a number plate. I ordered the same though in a mixture of numbers and letters, problem resolved. The legislation is working - the City of London has 800 to 900 plates reported stolen off vehicles per month (I guess to go onto other cars that do not wish to pay their congestion charges) Sorry Andrew if none of this helps. Regards Jonathan

  8. Hi Jonathan   I think you were one of the first MCC people I met when you had the red Mk2 like mine.   Number plates probably for Speed Cameras as well not just Red Ken.   I do remember a split restart sites for white & yellow which the marshall were trying to get Giles in his Class 4 Beetle up to the higher yellow box while he was sitting clutch heating nicely on the lower line ACTC trial though.   Motor Wholesalers still have stock of the numbers as well as such Maccess.   Mark

  9. Well, from the response, it wasn't such a stupid question was it? Many thanks to all those who've replied, either here or directly to me by e-mail.   Feedback - I do wonder if some of the statements made in the replies actually reflect absolutely up-to-date info as the two local "towing accessory" shops that I tried no longer stock them; my local Homebase (admittedly a rather small one) only had 75mm; but B&Q came to the rescue with some 60mm ones, albeit in a rather nasty typeface (but it should keep Mr Blakeley happy on Sunday).   Andrew

  10. I didn't have a number on my white disc for the Clee...perhaps marshalls can still remeber what  class a skoda gets shoved in? No-one complained....I think the number thing referred to having one's comp numbers in place before scrutineering?

  11. I have a magnetic type licence holder fitted just behind the mirror on the TR in which I have the coloured disk - white with no 5 in may case - and a car club sticker on the back. For normal road use I display the club sticker and reverse it for an event - this saves taking  the disc on and off or driving around with it on display all the time , MikeW

  12. Posted on behalf of John Aley   Hello Michael   As I haven`t yet succeeded in making direct entries on to your web site perhaps you would care to tell your readers that for something over 42 years I ran a small business which specialised in the manufacture and trade distribution of self adhesive race, rally and registration numbers dealing mainly with large motor sport suppliers like demon Tweeks and event organisers.   Although I no longer the control the company I am still in a position to supply in large quantities at trade rates but more importantly have boxes and boxes full of s/a registration numbers and am very happy to send one or two as required to anyone who sends a stamped addressed envelope.   Might help.   Best wishes, keep up the good work.   John Johnaley@portwrinkle.fsnet.co.uk
