can anybody tell me what body pannels can be replaced with fiberglass I know the bonnet & boot lid can but what about wings, doors ,sunsine roofs etc also can any of the windows be replaced with perspex,this is all in regards to a class 3 saloon.

  1. pretty much any panel can be whatever material you want......the proviso being, is the thing BOLTED on, or welded on? The shape, or profile is the governing factor...or class 7 beckons?   A welded panel may well be a 'stressed' part of the structure?   for ''glass''...I think the blue book ( the constructor's bible), limits things to side windows...and possible rear window for perspex, plus it must be (4mm) thick??   windscreen [ought] to be laminated, but toughened is ok? [the print in my current blue book is very small and headache- forming!]   replacing a sunroof with a bit of ally seems a good idea.....although I would suggest the  strengthening bits be left in place.   I often wonder about GF bits, like wings etc...but then I recall how many trees I've inadvertently slid into........and whether GF would simply spring back to shape, or get large holes and splits inserted?   a steel panel can at least be bashed back into some semblance of shape before continuing??

  2. I also recall from way back in the last century, a Talbot (?) Samba in class1....which had its entire rear end in perspex...apparetly the tailgate and rear end were essentially flat on the original, so the entire rear was a flat piece of perspex, with the body panels and window surround painted on (I think???!!!???)

  3.   Rule M 6.3.6 says 'Retain the engine cover, boot lid and wings although the material  may be changed.'  Don't think you can use any perspex windows in class3. This is covered by rule M6.3.7 'Any further modifcations will cause the vehicle to be reclassified to class 7' In classs 1 a hatchback would probably claim that the rear hatch is in effect the boot lid therefore the material (including the glass) could be changed but the silhouette of the vehicle must remain the same as seen from the side so that should rule out a flat sheet of cling film etc......   Stuart Cairney

Stuart is right, perspex windows are a definate No, No.  Bonnet Boot and Wings only.    If you cut a hole in the roof and claim its a sunshine roof, make sure you can demonstrate it opening and closing properly, and bring some sort of proof that its is a genuine offering, manufacterer or aftermarket, for that vehicle.   No sharp edges please!    The hatch in a hatchback IS the bootlid, but it has to look right.

I want to do away with the sunsine roof ,its fitted with a rotten webesto type ,the thought of trying to weld in a steel pannel with the distortion factor dosnt, inspire me the pop rivit sheet of ally is one way to go but from your last reply this may not be allowed ,the fiber glass option seemed the best way of keeping the right profile.

  8. The whole Section J refers to rules covering Circuit Racing.   If you wish to race your car you need to read this section carefully, but if you are building a Classic Trials car, anything you find in Section J is probably completely irrelevant.
    Feeling the "vibe" that comes from following this thread, E12.19.1 and B12.1.7 might be more apropriate reading.
