The Presidents trial was yet another great one-venue trial by Camel Vale. Apart from a bit of rain in the morning the trial was pretty dry, unlike the deluge at Dunmere woods :-). The initial rain made going a bit slippery in the morning but as the day went on grip went up. There was a really good variety of sections with a couple of fiendish restarts. For a change I actually managed to clean quite a few of the sections so it looks like I am beginning to learn how to do it. Towards the end my clutch started dying but I actually seemed to do better!
The heat and short distance between sections took it's toll on some of the water cooled cars and a number had overheating problems, as well as the usual transmission breakages.
Apart from the clutch the car went well. It is Beetle based and used to have a terrible flat spot at low revs. Scrapping the distributor and fitting mapped ignition (Megasquirt) has made a huge difference. For some reason the engine seems to like lots of advance just off idle at full throttle. Now the ECU is in place it won't be long before it gets EFI as well...
Many thanks to the marshals for organising this event. They had their work cut out keeping up with us. With only about 20 entrants the trial progressed very quickly.
A very demanding trial .with too much grip on some of the hills and none at all on others. At one time it seemed that if you didn't break anything you would do well .However, with 5 or 6 competitors breaking diffs & half shafts & 2 with electrical problems , it was not a rough trial. The sections were varied which required different driving techniques. A very enjoyable and taxing trial. Many thanks to organisers and marshalls.
