A query about tyres, tools and weight in Class 1 cars

Hello all, after doing a smattering of trials a few years ago then nothing since I recently realised how much I missed it, so I've bought a Renault 5 and started putting it together.

I was always involved with RWD trials before where loading the the boot up with tools spare tyres and jacks etc was advantageous for traction as well as the inevitable breakdown/puncture.
Now, being new to this FWD malarky I wonder what the deal is? I'm guessing as little weight as poss. on the back end is what you want.
Do you carry lots of tools and two tyres in the boot?

Silly query I know but hope you can help.

  1. put the spares behind the drivers/passenger seats ,tools jack ect goes under the bonnet, remove cut out everything unessary in the boot area if you can get one fit a grp tailgate,if this is a tranverse engine r5 expect a lot of diff/transmision probs ,the diff is held toghther with a circlip which wont stand much abuse

  2. Trialed a MK1 for 3yrs, Renaults are very flimsy cars and ours needed a lot
of added strength the engine shield was made to bolt into the shell at the front
and held all that together, The suspension on the early ones also need some mods, if you have the later R5 with the springs you have a better chance of getting it up in the air. Used an old Lorry rubber mud guard as the shield for the
rear end tank etc. its just the right width for a R5, we also had trouble with the carb, if you have one on your car, the floaqt is at the wrong end so when you climb up it floats back and shuts off the fuel, fitted a SU problem solved. Hope this is of help ...........Spence

  3. Cheers chaps, it's a late R5 - single point injected pushrod 1400. worrying news about the gearbox/diff, any way to strengthen that up?
Lorry mud guard sounds a good idea. Other than that I was planning a thick steel sump guard on the front subframe, spacers above the front struts and raise the torsion bars at the rear.
It's certainly flimsy, bodywork is paper thin!

  4. Just found out gearboxes are the same as Clios up to 2001, so there are going to plenty around to break for a while yet. Wonder if the 16v 'boxes are stronger?

If so it was having a go in your super-jacked-up mk1 R5 a few years ago that made me think of buying a R5!

  8. Ha! Yes.

It might have been shite but it was worth it for all the controversy over its rear ride height.

I've got the MK2 transverse-engined 5. I'll see how it does first. It wasn't expensive.
