RSS Feeds

Completing ignoring the suggestion to KISS ... I've subscribed to the RSS Feed with the intention of then disabling the email alerts, but ... it seems that the RSS Feed only updates when there is a new Note, not a new Comment on an existing Note, which is a shame.

Michael - Is this something that can be tweaked at Administrator level, although I suspect not?

Making New Posts

This is way that I, personally, think is easiest.

Let us assume that most people will "bookmark" the Notes page at http://classicaltrials.multiply.com/notes/

From this page, go Post > Add to Classical Gas > Note

... or at least that's how I'm creating this.

Signing Up

Had about 20 sign ups so far. Those who went along with my request to use their ChristiannameSurname as their User ID I have approved. Where existing/known old members have signed up using a nickname, and I know who you are, I am setting up as I record their real name against their nickname. You can access this table from links.

If you want to go along with the rest of us and use your real name as your user ID then goto "My Account" then "My Account Info". You can then delete your membership and sign up again with a new user ID.

Alternatively you can display your Christian name and Surname alongside your user ID. If you look at my posts you will see I have done that.

Volvo 340?

I was looking under a Volvo 340 auto the other day and they use a
variomatic belt drive transmission. Instead of a diff they effectively
have one transmission per wheel. How would that be classed for trials? I
suppose it could be considered a torque biasing diff.

Just curious - I have no intention of running a 340...

EXETER 2010

Does anyone know the date that the 2010 Exeter is running?

The event has normally run the first Friday / Saturday of January, but this year changed to the second weekend of the year - WHY?

The Message Board is on the move to Multiply

Microsoft are closing the system that hosts this message board by 21 February.

The reason for choosing Multiply as that Microsoft have set up a migration path. There is too much good stuff on the existing system to loose. And it will be lost if I don't move it by 21 February.

You will see a few changes to the Message Board home page as I need to clean it up before the migration.

Multiply will be different to what we have been used to. A bit more like Facebook. However, it does offer the facility to transfer the existing messages and photos. On an on-going basis it will allow members to post unlimited pictures and videos.

Please bear with me while I set it all up.

New Home for this forum?

Hello!

Where is this forum going when MSN Shuts down?

I've moved all 3 of mine mine over to PHPbb forums... and they are even talking about this place on www.buggyclubuk.org.uk

Where are you going to move to Mr Leete?

Exeter Results and Timing

Interested to see the results and how they were affected by the application of the timing rules.
  • The routecard only sepecified that you could arrive early at the finish. I know a lot of people checked in early at Musbury but there were no early penalties applied. IMHO if timing is to be applied in the future, itermediate controls (where there is no rest halt) should be have no penalty for early arrival.
  • Reading the notes to the results I see that different allowances for delays were given according to where yoy were running in the field. Seems pretty reasonable to me. Except for Class 0 where a lot of people were penalsied for being late at Islington, presumably because they were held up at Fingle where they got caught up with the main trial after their delays at Windout.
  • I see quite a few of the Bikes were penalised for being late at Haynes. Wonder if this was because they had to go very slowly in the freezing fog?
  • Is it my imagination or were quite a few of the cars penalised for lateness in the main trial old ones, A7, Buckler etc. Could that be because they don't go very fast on the road and get overtaken? No sure about that one

Lot of comments but I actually thought it worked OK. Be interesting to hear some other opinions.

MCC Breakfasts

Yes, I remember breakfasts of all sorts in all sorts of places too - remember the time that St. Kitts had a power cut just as everyone arrived?  Somehow they managed food in the pitch dark.  Or the rows of steaming gloves hung over the back of chairs by an open fire in a pub in Derbyshire where the food was expensive but at least it was warm.  Or the lady with the leather lungs calling out numbers at the Jolly Diner at Tintinhull.  Variety is all - just remember to take your Rennies with you.

MINI MOKES

I know we had this conversation quite while ago but some new info might help...

Im well on with a 66 Moke rebuild and should be finished within the next few weekes. I had a conversation with the owners of the Moke rights when I went to get some parts last week about whether it was a comercial or a car. John Lloyd from M-Parts told me that some were comercial and some were not. The commercial ones were marketed by Austin & Morris trucks and had different badges and were usually white. Most of the others were green. All the english mokes were on 10 inch wheels.

So after having the conversation with him - Do you think I could use one?

Cheers

Trials Moke

A really useful engine, er, I mean Moke.

Clee Hills Trial

Just got home from the Clee Hills. Really enjoyed the event which was very Beetle friendly, not too much mud and a few sections requiring plenty of ground clearance. Bit of confusion over the Long Mynd and like the others in our class ended up taking the snow route. Not sure if this was "official" or competitor initiative!

How nice it was to have such a clear day, what fantastic views. Those snow capped hills were absolutely beautiful.

How was your Clee Hills Trial.

Cannon chassis.

A while back I mentioned that I had purchased the original jig on which all genuine Cannon chassis were built. With the help of Ian Moss it was brought back from Kent (just a few miles from Mike Cannon's home) and it is now in the hands of Steve Holder at Fourtune Engineering. Steve has already built one complete brand new chassis on the jig and repaired another chassis belonging to Josh Moss.

Should you have a genuine chassis needing repair then doing it on the original jig makes a lot of sense.

With a new chassis from this jig and pre-1972 mechanicals you SHOULD be able to legally qualify for tax-free excise duty.

Exeter Trial - who mentioned pasties?

Check out the pics in the second message down on this thread Jonathan ;-)

I have to say that the second pasty was only warm and not a patch on the first thoroughly hot specimen of Islington's finest!

Insurance

Does anyone know of an insurer that will cover trials? I have already tried Richard Egger but the quote was ridiculous.

Quads??

I see the Dakar and Transafrican Safari have classes for road legal quads. When fitted with appropriately terrain-friendly tyres, could there be a place in Classic Trials for them?

I must admit to having little experience of quads, but they cannot be any worse for the environment that a two person and ballasted class eight on full power. I've had to get stuck in plenty of their deep muddy ruts caused by tall wheels, etc. We cannot say that quads should be in the seperate motorcycle events because we already share classic trials with bikes, some even have sidecars and two people. So has the nettle been grasped and all the details sorted out and it's just me that doesn't know about it?

Perhaps I could run it past the Ilkley C of C as a taster if anyone is interested?

Regards to all,
John

Clee Hills Trial - Scrutineering

In an attempt to try to reduce the traditional chaos at the start, we are experimenting this year by offering scrutineering and signing-on at The Craven Arms on Saturday Evening between 5:30pm and 7:30pm (in addition to the usual on the day service of course).
The purpose of this is twofold, the other reason being to encourage those of you who travel up on the Saturday to have your evening meal at the start venue.   The pub makes no charge on us for our use of their facilities and the only benefit they get from our presence is the extra sales they take.  The least that you as competitors can do is to say thank you by spending your hard earned with them.
You might also buy the hard working organisers a "thank you" as well!
Trailers may also be left in the trailer park overnight if desired
.

Welcome to bvwf-1 = Terry Ball
