Brooklands

From Andrea Lane

I am an enthusiast of motor racing circuits.

Brooklands has ever been my favourite one.

There is a “refurbishment” plan by DaimlerChrysler, but in this web page there is a much more interesting proposal:

If this proposal has thrilled you, please spread the word through the web ... and among the members of your club!

  1. I know that, strictly speaking, Brooklands has very little to do with classic trials but it does have quite a place in MCC history, so we might as well continue this discussion ...   It's now a year since we all visited for the MCC/MAC celebrations, and I haven't been back since, but I came away from that day feeling very depressed. Not so much about the steadily-encroaching modern development but more about the generally tatty state of the site. The immediate Clubhouse/Museum/Test Hill area is fine, and there are a few views of the banking which still conjure-up the Pre-War feel, but what made me really depressed was all the aviation stuff.   I know that Brooklands is as important to the flying fraternity as it is to 'us', and the Brooklands Society has acheived a huge amount in balancing the various interests, but it's never going to be the Brooklands that we see in the old photographs with airplanes and hangers 'plonked' right across the Banking end of the Finishing Straight. So, in my humble opinion, until someone can properly reconcile the motoring/flying interests even the small bit of Brooklands that's left intact will remain a sad shadow of its former self.   Andrew

  2. I think I will agree with you there Andrew.   Although I used to get a sandwich from Marks & Spencers at the other end of the track (why did they cut an extra chunk out of the banking?) if driving by at lunchtime and eat it on top of the banking. It seems alot less hemmed in than the Test Hill area.   Maybe as part of the redevelopement of South & East London for the Olympic bid will result in the Crystal Palace track... I wouldn't mind the proposed hike in council tax in London for that.   A new track would be good though   Mark

  3. I can remember Crystal Palace. I only went there once and that was for the very last meeting. I seem to remember Gerry Marshal won in a Lister Jaguar.   Michael
