Classical Gas 2010 Christmas Quiz

Here's the first question. There is a prize of a bottle of wine for the right answer, provided I can deliver it while I am trialling!

This famous car was last trialled in 1964 and hopefully will appear on the hills again after some TLC.

Can you identify the car and say who built it and for who?
We would also like to know about the cars competition history.

Ford "Pop" axle breakages

Carl Talbot is cataloguing the breakages in Ford Pop type axles to ascertain the weakest specific parts in their order of vulnerability, ie not just 'the diff. broke' but more specific , as in: 'the planet gears broke'  or  'seized on pin' or 'pinion teeth broke' or 'half shaft broke'

Carl is looking at improving the standard "Pop" axle for trialling, having done a lot of work on the "English" axle, coming up with a solution using a transit diff that is used successfully by a lot of triallers.

At the moment Carl is trialling a Buckler Mk5. I am sure we will benefit from his work on the standard Pop axle if we can help him with this information. If you can help please email mleete24@hotmail.com and I will forward. - Michael

Christmas is coming --- Turn Key Trials car ready for 2011 season

I have recommissioned and shaken down my Class 8  VW Special .  It is on the key and ready for 2011 season , with a reduced price to sell .
I have been informed this is a Cornish car of notable past success [ ex Dave Prowse ?]
Recent outings were a 3rd in class on S+DMC Autumn Trial and a faultless outing on the Allen Trial as stand in car for Nigel and Tim [ Nigel commented how nice it is to drive]

Have a look in the Market section for a full spec list

Ideal Christmas present !

My Allen Trial

Left Bedford just after 4.30 and had an easy run to Doynton via Buckingham and Oxford, joining the M4 at Swindon. Arrived at start not long after 7.30 to join a long queue for scruitineering that streched a long way down the narrow street. Not sure the locals will have enjoyed all those idling engines outside their windows when thet were expecting a Sunday morning lie in! The first few sections still had a bit of ice and we were doing well until we got to Big Uplands where we got round the corner but stopped at the three when we ran out of momentum, or was it ground clearance. It was a long reverse down! Most of the lower classes seemed to flounder here but I understand the Trojans went clear, well done.

We left the line at Guys Hill with the wheels spinning so didn't get very far. We had a bit of a delay on Travers when the Sierra had issues but a clear run through after that. We managed to clear the first two Ubley Woods sections but couldn't get the Beetle over the hump on the third.

Enjoyed the Lakeside sections, I thought Pete Hart had made a good job of making the best of this venue. John Walker was as magnificent as ever, although the ruts have got a lot deeper since I last went up it 4 years ago. Lets hope it stays usable. Pleased that the Beetle ran well all day.

We made for home as soon as we finished and I was back in Bedford at 19.30. I understand from Duncan Stephens that the results may read something like:-

1 Nick Cleal 2
2 Bill Bennett 2
3 Hans Viertel 3
4 Steve Potter in his Trojan 3
5 Dave Haizledean 3

Unfortunately due to continuing unemployment I must now reluctantly part with my car. It has an mot until Dec 2010, tax free, although currently on sorn.

The running gear is 1600cc crossflow with BCF2 cam, Escort 4 speed gearbox, 4.4 diff. I also have numerous spares including front and rear wings, nose cone, all new. Also spare diff and drive shafts, wheels etc which I would include if the full price is met.

The car is not perfect having been used for trials since it was built, but is a very capable car, having won numerous medals, gold silver and bronze. I will hopefully be using it, for the last time at the Falcon MC Kensworth Car Trial on Sunday 7th November if you would like to come along to view and try it out, otherwise the car is in Northampton.

Orange Mk1 towing MG

I think I saw what looked to be an Orange Mk1 Escort towing a prewar MG going north on the M1 around Chesterfield on Monday 18th around 4pm.

I only got a glimpse as I was heading south to home.

I have it in my mind that it was Dave Miller's Escort with Bill's Bennets J2 on a trailer - or am I imagining it!!

out of action

On my way home from the Brickhill PCT on Sunday i could smell the lovely odour of gearbox oil... 5 hours and a recovery later i got home.

After further investigaton it seems that unfortunately the internals of my diff have decided to become externals! Munching their way through the pinion on their way out into the bell housing for good measure. So unless anyone has a spare BE3 gearbox with a 4.4+ final drive and custom 4 pin diff going spare, i'm going to be out of action for a while!

Ebworth Classic Trial 9th October 2010

In case anyone isn't already aware.....

THE EBWORTH CLASSIC TRIAL 9th October 2010

The Stroud and District Motor Club would like to invite you to our Ebworth Classic Trial. The Trial is set in the glorious surrounding of Ebworth Woods, a nature reserve owned by the National Trust and managed in conjunction with English Nature.

In the last 5 years the National Trust team at Ebworth Woods has had to deal with excessive water erosion due to changing weather patterns [Two of the Trials favourite sections, Nowhere and Shade Bottom have been completely washed away] This has prompted a full review of the woodland management which unfortunately means we are now unable to use the woods as often as we would like.  Therefore the trial will now only be run in Ebworth Woods biannually. We hope that this will lead to the sections being in excellent condition every time the trial takes place and will aid larger entries than in recent years. Hopefully this disappointing news will not mean the end of Ebworth which I’m sure you will all agree has been one of the ‘must do’ trials of the previous few decades. We would appreciate the support of all clubs in ensuring that the trial can still be a success.  What better way to spend a Saturday in October than join us, either as a competitor or as a marshal. We look forward to seeing you for what should be an enjoyable event.

This year we are introducing a Clubsport permit Class O. No Competition Licence is required for this class. Competitors will run in class order with the main trial. For this introductory year Class O will not be eligible for awards.

The event will feature a minimum of 10 sections attempted on at least 3 rounds, with 2 observed tests as tie breakers [30+ Sections]

Depending on weather conditions we are looking to run the traditional hills used for many years plus some hills recently found. The trees that may have caused concern/damage to cars in the past have either been removed or sections have been re-routed to avoid them.

As it is a single venue event, no vehicle Tax or MOT is required .

Regs and entry forms are available to download on the club website http://www.sanddmc.co.uk/ or call the event secretary, Tim Smith 07932858261

Well done Duncan

From the latest edition of MSA news -

Reigning MSA British Sporting Trial Champion Duncan Stephens sealed the 2010 MSA British Car Trial Championship with second place in the HCC Wales Trial.

Stephens’ success makes him the first person to win MSA Championships in two separate Trial disciplines in consecutive years, as well as the first to hold two simultaneously.
“Without hard team work and the passenger skills of Jade Bray I’m convinced that I wouldn’t have won the championship,” said Stephens. “Becoming the first person to take back-to-back titles in different Trial disciplines means more than winning either individually.”

Stephens took up Car Trials in 1995, aged 15, and in 2002 became the MSA British Car Trial Vice-Champion. He then switched to the MSA British Sporting Trial Championship and, having twice been runner-up, duly claimed the crown last season. He earned this year’s Car Trial title with two rounds to spare.

More Rules and Regulations

I read on page 38 of the glossy and expensive "Motorsports Now" that is paid for from our competition licence fee that we are going to have to carry a "Spill Kit".

I quote:-

1.3.24 A medium sized spill kit must be available at the start of each section. Exceptionally for Sporting and Car Trials where sections are adjacent to one another a single medium sized spill kit must be deployed.

9.8.3 All vehicles should carry a small spill kit complying with J5.20.13. mandatory for Classic Reliability Trials from 1st Jan 2012

End Quote

OK will a roll of toilet paper in a supermarket bag do? Not on your life. I can see this costing yet more money.

Looking in the present Blue Book on page 157 I see:-

5.20.13 It is strongly recommended that for all competitors participating in single venue competitions to have available at their paddock base and for multivenue competitions to carry within their vehicles a self contained spill kit capable of effectively absorbing minor spillages of up to 1.5 litres of all vehicle fluids - oils, fuels, coolants, battery acid. Used spill kits are to be disposed off in accordance with local or national guidelines.

So what they are proposing is to make that recommendation mandatory.

Interesting that when you look at the MSA Trials Committee Document from their meeting on 17 March when they drafted the above. Then refer to their consultation document, it doesn't contain anything about this spill kit business.

Anyway the closing date for consultation is 20 August.

The Definitive List of Marlins

I have just published a long-delayed update to the "Definitive List of Trials-Prepared Marlins" on my Wheelspin website at http://www.wheelspin.info/. There are, however, still lots of question marks, cars which I know have been sold but I don't know to whom, and other missing bits and pieces that make the list rather less than truly definitive. If anyone can fill in the gaps, notify me of errors, or provide any other nuggets of useful information, I'd be most grateful. Public comments can be posted here, or anything confidential emailed directly to me at andrew@andrewkb.net.

Thanks in anticipation.

Only info I can find is, April 1st 1951 The Bartley Trial winner Cyril Corbishley in his C.C.Special and other award winners A.A.Butler 1172cc Clegg Special and B.F.Clegg 1172cc Clegg Special.

Can anyone help identify this Trials Car?

Dellow Register Secretary David Haley asks -

We recently had a query about a Dellow with the registration number KMB300 which is not listed on the Dellow Register. After some prolonged correspondence the enquirer managed to get some photographs scanned and e-mailed to us. It became immediately obvious from these photographs that it probably wasn't a Dellow.

But there are some odd looking Dellows around and before I write it off, I thought it would be a good idea to seek opinions. Could you post it on Classical Gas please?

We are all entitled to our opinion.

Please, never let it get personal. By all means attack a post you don't agree with, but don't attack the poster, you might be running next to him/her at the next trial!

Class 1

Hi, all, just a short message this time.

Does anyone else think Class 1 could be or should be split up in to engine size? How is a 2cv going to compete against a 2l? Most other forms of motor sport seem to split the class front engined front wheel drive, in to engine size, may get a few more 2cv`s doing it etc. I know engine size isn't everything in trails, but RWDs get split up in to there own class`s.

Up to 1000cc, 1000cc to 1600cc, 1601cc and over??

Cheers Jason

Anyone seen this Cannon?

Hi Michael

Enjoying Classical Gas as ever.

I'm trying to trace a 1953 Cannon, reg JSV 914, with a 1.3 crossflow that was up for sale a couple of years ago (Pioneer Automobiles - too pricey at just under £5k, then H&H Auctions and then another auction  - not sure if it sold). Pic attached.

Looks like a great bet for classic trails - so I'm wondering if it is has popped up on an event.

Hello again.  The organising team for the 6th Windwhistle Motor Club single venue clubsport classic trial on Sunday 25th April in the woods at Bovey Down near Seaton Devon made a site visit to the venue on Saturday and all is looking good.  We have plenty of ideas to spice the event up a bit and make some changes so as there are a few places left and the closing date is this Saturday 17th April dont leave it too late to get your entry in.  Normans Hump and Clinton, 3 times, in the daylight, plus one or two wiggly ones in and out of the trees and may be the benefit of some mobile rainfall during the day is all adding up to a lot of fun in the trying out of different tyre pressures, restart techniques, throttle control, etc. Sid Vale Carnival Club catering tent on site all day and portaloo on site.  Entries to Anne Whellock 01460 53645.  anne.whellock@btconnect.com  Marshals volunteer please to Anna Robinson david@robinson2x.plus.com

Car 137 on Bishops Wood, Lands End Trial 2010.

I thought I'd post this rather nice clip here. Its car 137 being thrown up Bishops Wood by Brian Hampson.
I've put a few clips up on Youtube and will add more over the next week.
You'll find them here:

All clips were filmed by Jon Elliott.

How was your Lands End?

I thought it was a tough one, challenging, fair but tough.

We experieced all sorts of weather. Sun on the way to Popham, a clear sky on the route to Bridgewater, some snow remaining under the hedges across Exmoor, persistent rain after lunch, clearing as we arrived at the finish.

We started the sections in good mood when we saw a generous restart box on Fellons Oak. It was pretty muddy though, especially the exit track, pointing to the conditions for the rest of the trial.

We were defeated by Rodneys Revenge and Cutliffe Lane. More momentum next time? No restarts on either Beggars or Daracott, be nice to know more about the thinking there as it left them pretty un-competitive.

Crackington, what a buzz and very knowledgable spectators. Blue Hills was a real sting in the tail. We saw quite a few failures on 1 and were delighted when we didn't join them. Suffered the indignity of the winch on 2 when I made a bad choice on pressures. The engine bogged down and I couln't get it back. Understand the bit after the restart was "challenging"

How was your Lands End ?

Edinburgh Trial Sections

Hello There,

The Edinburgh Trial Route Team are on the lookout for new sections. As you know from last years event we need some new hills. Can you help with any ideas?

Derbyshire is proving more and more difficult so we need to consider spreading our wings, perhaps considering Staffordshire and Yorkshire as well as our usual area. More radical ideas? Tell me them as well.

At this stage we can consider anything. Rights of Way, Private Land, Free, Paid For. If you have an idea call me on either 01332 832750 or 07860 559496.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Trials Prepared Ka for Sale

The engine was rebuilt with a Piper Fast Road Cam approximately 3000 miles ago. I have done 4 classic trials with 1 class 'O' award. It's on 14" alloys at the moment, also included a set of 4 roystyle wheels, with an excellent set of tyres (185"x13" M.X.V. Michelins). The sump guard and the petrol tank guard are removed at present- as they are lead weighted; but can be easily fitted. It has longer heavy duty front springs to increase ground clearance. But the bodywork has a few 'Trial scars!!' I am in the Saffron Walden area.

Tax and MOT until January 2011.

Know any motorcyclists?

Anybody know any of the trail riders stopped by BBNP Rangers on Sarn hellen that are being prosecuted??  The TRF are working on a defense but only have contact with a few of the 12 or 13 involved.

So if you know of anyone who is involved in a prosecution from BBNP get them to contact the TRF or GLASS execs as they are working together on a group defense.

Torbay Classic Trial Sunday March 21st

Been to  look at  some of the sections this afternoon. Unless we have a drought over the next 3 weeks it going to be a heck of a lot more slippery than back in Sept  .
We  have some wicked  deviations  for  class  8   and only one re-start line on Tipley  so if your in class 3  burn baby burn  !!!!!
You all missed having a go at Simms  back in Jan,   so  come on down to  Devon  on Sunday  March  21st  and  have some fun.  Start venue very easy to get to  right beside M5.
I  never thought i say this but thank goodness for the four wheel drive brigade!  they really use Simms a lot these days  and a combination of four wheels digging  and  continuous frosts this winter,  some of the dreaded concrete is beginning to lift........

How was your Northern Trial

We had a grand time. Went up mid week to take in the sights and really enjoyed the event itself. I know the organisers were disapointed to loose quite a few sections through a combination of forestry operations and the weather. Personally I didn't think this detracted to much from the event apart from there being quite a few sections where you had to reverse back down if you failed. We were an early number and didn't experience any delay but reversing time could have affected those towards the back.

I enjoyed the sections, especially coming out the top of Sandale under my own power!  Unlike my last Northern I didn't commit any howlers this year so no 11's or 12's, nor did I hit any trees this time. Big shout out to Thomas Aldrian who was marshalling on Ladyside and helped keep that slate clean when I nealy backed into one and had to be pushed off. Sorry about the mud on your new jacket Thomas! Perhaps I picked up 10 or so marks during the day. We will see when the results come out.

I understand Big Cockup was canceled  and a little bird tells me that if it wasn't for this Dean Partington would have picked up an 11 after an aerial maneuver!

Super trialling weather, muddy underneath on a cold clear day allowing us from down south to experience those wonderful views.

My Clee Hills Trial

We had a great day in the Beetle. I thought the weather was ideal. Quite a bit of mud on a dry day. Super.

Highlights of our day were getting smoothly around the hairpin at Ippikins Rock for a clean, unlike the last two years when we went a bit mad and understeered into the bank. We were also thrilled to clean two of the Priots Holt sections which we knew quite well having marshaled them during our sabbatical.

Loved the "new" Castle Hill section. Lets hope that went well with the locals and can be a feature of the event for the future (I still miss Hungerdord). For those that weren't there its very reminiscent of Axe on The Cotswold Clouds. Long and in a deep gully. OK its not a result deciding stopper but its very enjoyable.

Us lower class mortals were allowed into Strefford Woods this year. We cleaned the first of our sections, failed the second and used one of the higher class sections as the escape road including the gunge pit. Well done those marshals.

Negatives. Well I missed the track from Alez Oop to Priots Holt and I didn't like the regularity test. IMHO mental arithmetic shouldn't play a part in the results of a trial.

In summary. Well done Adrian, Graham, Pat and everyone else on the team for a super day.

How was your Clee Hills Trial?

Northern Classic Trial

With just over 4 weeks to go, preperations are well advanced for the Northern despite the widest variety of weather seen for years doing its best to cause problems. No chance! We are Fell Side and this is the Northern. Enough said. Can I ask that anyone who received an award on the 2008 Northern, which is due to be returned, take it  to the Clee and hand over to Fred Mills or Derek Reynolds. Alternatively please bring it along to the Northern or pass on to someone else to hand over. It would help if you could let me know what you will be doing by sending me a message at mykepocock@yahoo.co.uk

Look forward to seeing many of you on the 13th February.

Pining for the lost Exeter?

Then why not enter the Clee Hills?    We have a few places left and can promise a great day out in beautiful Shropshire.   Much work has been done over the year in reducing the worst ruts (Yorkshire Dutton drivers please note) and reducing the mud hole in Strefford Wood.
You can enter online at http://www.shelsley-walsh.co.uk/events/content.asp?ms=21&ei=107 or just print the forms from there.
Come and have some fun.....

A Question from across the pond about MG PA/PB JB 6157 "Leonidis"

I have received this Email from Tim Considine. Can we help?

"I have happily 'stumbled onto' your site whilst searching the Internet for Lewis Welch.  I'm a writer, a contributing editor for the U.S. magazine Road & Track, but now doing a non-R&T-related story for the Collier Museum in Florida.  I'm writing a history of one of their cars, MG PA/PB JB 6157 (chassis number 1667), one of the three MGs (#57) run under Captain Eyston at Le Mans in 1935 by an all-women's team of drivers and later bought, crashed on the road, rebodied and driven in the States by Miles Collier, who also drove it at Le Mans with Lewis Welch in '1939 (Collier is sometimes confused with the Brit Michael Collier in records).

Specifically, what I'm looking for is any information about whether the car was driven competitively by anyone prior to Le Mans and if so, by whom, where and to what effect.  Was it tested at Brooklands before Le Mans or run in any trials, etc?  Also, after Le Mans, the car was repainted in the colors of Cream Cracker and The Three Musketeers and allegedly driven in trials.  But I can find no records over here in 'the colonies' of these competitions.  Again, it would be great to know if that particular car were run and where, under what number and by whom.

Welch was one of the prominent Three Musketeers, I gather.  I wonder if he ever drove it before it was sold to Miles Collier in October, 1935  The Musketeers also experimented with Marshall superchargers in '35, apparently to great benefit.  Again, I wonder if 6157 ever had a blower in competition, as it was delivered to Collier with one - at his request, it's written here, but who knows.

Any light that could be thrown on these questions or contact information for someone who might know would be very much appreciated, as this kind of detail from so far back is very hard to come by here, particularly for such an esoteric form of the sport as trials.

Regardless, congratulations on your website.  What a treasure.

It's a long shot, but...

In my "local" there's a blown up photo of the outside of the pub from what appears to be pre-war times. Nothing remarkable about that except there's a large number of people, cars, bikes and sidecars around and a large banner proclaiming "FINISH".

Looking more closely at the banner there's a logo that looks to have the words "Motor Cycling" on it. I thought it might be the MCC but hunting around the net, the closest thing I can find to the script / font used on the banner looks to be from Motor Cycling magazine - see http://www.dropbears.com/c/classicmemories/gallery/motorcycling_1900-1949/index.htm

Anyone any ideas of the event? The pub is The George in the Tree and the town is Balsall Common.

Next time I'm passing with a camera I'll get a photo.
