out of action

On my way home from the Brickhill PCT on Sunday i could smell the lovely odour of gearbox oil... 5 hours and a recovery later i got home.

After further investigaton it seems that unfortunately the internals of my diff have decided to become externals! Munching their way through the pinion on their way out into the bell housing for good measure. So unless anyone has a spare BE3 gearbox with a 4.4+ final drive and custom 4 pin diff going spare, i'm going to be out of action for a while!

  2. Sykes Speed have a BE3 with 4.4 CWP at the mo and its under £200. Was tempted myself.

    Is the diff knackered completely?

  3. Oh dear...perhaps we tempted fate James? Sorry!

Maybe 60+ sections in one weekend was a few too many..?

  4. Hi James - sorry you've had some grief after all this time - I remember my first 2 pin unit seized then worked its way out to cut through the gearbox casing: only realised when I saw oil on the garage floor about 5 days before an Exeter about 10 years ago...hasty strip, rinse and weld! I have designed and built my own 4 pin diff, so I guess could repeat the exercise for yourself, but what with finding star wheels and machining a nice EN 24 carrier it wouldn't be quick. Meantime, I do have a beefier than standard 2 pin diff that you could have - would mean swapping your inboard CVJ's from Pug to Citroen to get the right splines. I'll also check my crownwheel stock. Anyway, just a thought amongst other offers you're getting. Cheers Ad.

  7. Thanks Lee for that one I will give them a call. And thanks Adrian T-P, I will chat to Adrian B in the week and see what we can come up with as he built the diff, I think it is salvagable its just so annoying that it took out the pinion aswell, if only standard ratios were ideal then life would be a lot easier!

Carl - whatever gave you that impression? :)

  8. remove sump guard, battery, battery tray, compressor, driveshafts
    drop gear oil
    remove gearbox
    new diff spider (cross pin)
    new planet gears (4)
    new sun gears
    new 4.4 pinion
new clutch plate (gear oil+clutch=new clutch!!)
    new clutch cover
    2nd hand flywheel
2nd hand gearbox (for its casing)
stripping of 2 gearboxes (my old one with the gears i wanted, and another one for its casing)
    rebuild of "new" gearbox
    refit gearbox
refit sump guard, battery, battery tray, compressor, driveshafts
    new gearbox oil

everything other than the gearbox rebuild has been done myself over the past 2 weeks. obviously i'm not expecting a similar failure to happen in the near future but its certainly going to take a while to replenish the pot of gold that paid for the damage done by a few teeth coming off a planet gear!!
