Sporting Owner Drivers Club

Is this club still in existance? I ask as I have just bought on eBay a package of memoriabilia for just a few pounds. I bought it as I would like it all to go to a good home.
The package contains among other things a marshalls armband, cloth badges, metal badges, book matches, small metal plates for a variety of events in the 60's, stickers for the Rally Dubonet and Woburn hill climbs etc. and also trials. All are in as new condition and its   a real walk down memory lane. I remember marshaling on the Dubonet rally when it ran in Wales in the 60's, we all got a bottle of Dubonet! I also checked the map navigation for Stewart Gray when he ran the SOD's rally in East Anglia as a Motoring News round.
So if anyone is interested please get in touch.

  2. Stuart,   The "SOD's" as they are affectionately known faded away about two years ago. They were based in the Dunstable area and along with Herts County, Chess Valley and Falcon were one of the big clubs in my area. I joined SOD's back in the 70's and was still a member when they faded away. In fact you will see their club sticker (it's a tortoise) in the rear side windows of my Beetle. Although Falcon has always been my "main" club I joined SOD's because they were very active in local trials. As you say they became very well known for rallying as well. The problem came about eight years ago when the rallying and trialling members had a disagreement and the triallers left and joined Falcon, which at the time was almost dieing.   The rallying fraternity lost their special stage event and the club as down to running a few 12 cars and as I said faded away a year or so ago. John Parsons (a SOD's VP), Verdun Webley, Mike Pearson, Andy Clarke were all SOD's men and are very much alive and kicking and may be interested in the memorabilia or know someone who is.   Michael

  3. Heard that SOD's was officially wound up at the end of 2003. Very, very sad when you consider all the history.   Michael

  4. It is very sad when you hear of such an old club folding, especially one with so much competition history. I met Verdun Webly at the Goodwood Festival of Speed at the weekend and he and some of the other old members of SOD's want the bits I bought, so they will go to a good home and not just be thrown away. 6. I was a member at the time of the demise and I have no idea. Cathy Harris was the Chair at the time they stopped but I would ask Dave Smith who we see at a lot of local trials. Dave was a recent member of the SOD's commitee. I don't think JP, MP, Tom, Verdun etc would know as they were out of contact. A lot of people think the trophies should be acquired by Falcon and used as awards for the local trials.   On a more legalistic note I think the strict procedure is that the assets should be sold and the proceeds distributed to the members at the time of the demise. I don't know if the fact that SOD's were a limited company makes any difference.   The whole thing of course is very sad.   Michael   PS - It's super to see your message here but could you make sure you sign your posts with your - real name - I know you are Laurie Knight's grandson but the other members probably haven't worked that out! Hope to see you trialing soon.
