KYRLE TRIAL

Myself and fellow Minehead motor club  member Tim Hellings have just got back from marshalling and spectating on a very dry Kyrle trial. We marshalled the second section which was Goldsmiths 1 and witnessed some very cunning sections set out by Barty and his team, just before the restart on a straight piece of track the numbered markers changed from the right to the left meaning you had to drive up the flat verge on the left therefore keeping the markers on your right, and we were amazed to see about 50% or more of the field drop 10 marks by not noticing this and putting all 4 wheels out of the section. An absolutely cracking way of taking big points off of people on a relatively easy, dry section. We then watched at Jack and Jill witnessed an absolutely massive wheelie from ' Harvey(the nutter)Waters on Jack as he stood the pop on it's rear bumper at very nearly 90 degrees.I think passenger Dave Miller needs a medal (or a brain transplant). All in all we had a great day and took a few photos which I will try to post when I figure it out . I think more than a few will be puzzled by the 10 picked up on section 2 , but I suppose it was quite early in the morning !

  1. Hi to all you Kyrle trial fans, We had a fun time on the trial -even more when we broke the rear rose joint that held on our rear axle on our Liege after section two. Thanks to the guys who lifted the car on it side so we could check what was broken. A big thanks again to Julian Lack for all his help with the tow to the top of the section and help with the temp repair.  We got round the trial and even cleaned some sections and it was nice to get the Finishers Certificate. I must carry more cable zip ties and jubilee clips on events! I just hope Dave Cooke got his camera on Harvey when he went up Jack & Jill.   On  the way home my wife said we ARE doing it next year so see you all there. Thanks for all your hard work and a great event. Hope to see some of you at the Iklley Trial. Cheers Steve & Caroline No 35 Liege

  2. Greetings All, Brian and I also just landed home from a very dry Kyrle and what a super time we had. Never seen inclines like them! We have never run out of power before either, we even resorted to blowing the  tyres up harder than our 14psi to encourage a bit of wheelspin so that it wouldn't run out of puff due to the fantastic grip. Great idea, shame it didn't work. Was that massive rock face on the left, covered in tyre rubber, part of my worst nightmare or was it for real? Lovely long dirt road transit sections made this a memorable event, thanks to all concerned. Any high resolution photos of kit cars would be welcome as I will be donating an article to a new magazine later this week. breakfree@blueyonder.co.uk     John Rhodes, yeller Dutton.

  3. Don't forget we cleaned Pludds with that nice rubber coated rock!   We'll be back next year too - with more power just in-case it's dry again!   Fantastic!  Gave the suspension a severe working out and it seems to have come up shining again - still not knocked all the Northern and March Hare mud off yet!   Best instruction from co-driver in the whole trial on a section - "turn right - you have to turn right" . . . "yes John, I will .. . once the front wheels land again . . . "   Bri   (John's driver in the yeller Dutton)

  4. After the Lands End, I thought Class 0 was for wimps. I tried to change to Class 4 for the Kyrle but was advised to stay put as it was my first one. Reluctantly I did and what a great event! This is what Class 0 should be like. I lack power and ground clearance in my virtually-standard Skoda Estelle and most of the hills got the better of us, offering a superbly challenging event.   Well-organised, well-marshalled..................well done! See you next year.........probably hopelessly beaten......with more power in Class 4.   Nigel Jones

  5. It must have been the weather, but these are just some of the 600+ photos I took at the Start, Jack & Jill and Lane End.  I'm pretty sure I have some sort of Photo of everyone who got to Jack and Jill.  I haven't done any editting on these, so they may need a bit of tidying, but I have hi-res images of them all.  And yes there are no less than 8 photos of Harvey's run up Jack.  I also have photos of two yellow Dutton's Rick Neale's Delos and your Phaeton.  Get in touch and I can send you some.   Start http://hoits.smugmug.com/gallery/2751721/1/146295908   Jack and Jill http://hoits.smugmug.com/gallery/2751832/1/146300744   Lane End http://hoits.smugmug.com/gallery/2748996/1/146110134   As usual if anyone wants hi-res copies please let me know.   Dave Cook

  6. Hi Nick,
Great pics, Aaron and I had a fantastic day out, the golf ran well, was not expecting it to be so tough, spent all day with my right foot firmly planted.

Mike C swears blind he went the right way on Goldsmith, (the camera never lies) so they say.

Does anyone know if Giles has finished yet, last seen smoking on Point & Press.

  7. Me, The Boss and Baldrick also had a superb day on Sunday. Well worth the 500 mile round trip from Carlisle. Some cracking hills and more of the learning curve for tyre pressures. Never below 15 and should have gone higher at times. Spoke to a Marlin driver who was on 22 on one hill! Took flying lessons on a number of occasions. Does anyone have any photos of Car 62, blue and white Skoda Estelle on any of the hills they could let me have in any format? Route book spot on and plenty of direction markers. The only problem was with the dip-stick, thats the one behind the wheel!!! The in-car video turned well but still doesnt show the steepness of some of the hills. Congratulations to the club for a brilliant day.   Myke Pocock, The Boss and Baldrick.

  8. Thanks to all involved in making the Kyrle a great event, well organised and run. Last year I navagated in a friends Golf and remember the mud that came home with me. This year I drove my own BMW, No. 52 described as "unknown" on the photos, well now you know. As a newcomer to the sport it's good to read of others who were having trouble getting their tyre pressures right. The BMs got lots of power but when it bogged down due to too much grip we were lost, so pressures were put up for the next section only to find too much wheel spin was our downfall. Oh well you live & learn and there's always next year! The dust layer INSIDE the car is almost as bad as outside but no mud on the carpet when I got home, so no ear wigging from the domestic engineer this time. Great people to mix with and I'll catch most of you somewhere on a hill or in a wood later in the year. Reg Salway

  9. Thanks for the kind words. Paul and The Team had great difficulty in setting out the trial in such dry conditions, it was difficult. The large rock on Pludds, which I looked at on Monday, will be delt with before next years Kyrle. Results posted this afternoon with a first class stamp. Awards will be sent out in due course. Is it a record, the winning team, Bump & Grind, had a grand total of zero points! Stuart Harrold

  10. Dave - Great photos, could you please sent me some hi-res copies of me (63 & 64) to sanders_k@hotmail.com   What a great Trial given the dry conditions, so hard for the organisers to get right but they pulled-it off well - thanks to you all.   Keith.

Hi Myke,   I have three, one on Jill, and two on Lane End .  I have no idea if you'll be able to see them attached to this message board.  If you can't, send me your e'mail address and I 'll send them direct to you.  These are low res versions at about 120kb.  I can send you Hi-res at about 3Mb. Just let me know if you want any.   Dave Cook
