Front Number must be on a vertical surface

Just seen in the Kyrle Final Instructions that we are not supposed to put the front numbers on the inside of the windscreen. Anyone know if this is a new thing? Certainly in many saloons there are no truly vertical surfaces to fit the numbers to. - Michael

  1. I am wondering about this aswell. In a closed car I would think the top of the windscreen is about the best place to put the number. I may have to mount a plate onto the front bumper and attach the number to that, same on the rear.

  2. Main point about this, speaking as an observer, is that numbers front and back must be visible.  Often back number is more important so that your triumphant climb can be noted as you roar past.

  3. Maybe Neil is just conducting a test to see how many people actually read the Final Instructions!

  5. As a slight aside, I need to make some number holders for my car, is there a standard size for the numbers, or is it at the organisers discretion?   Richard N

  6. Ross and District MC introduced this last year (I had always run with numbers in the windows). So I spent a fair bit of time making number holders for back and front of the car, as the regs stated " no compliance, no run". At scrutineering, most had complied but a lot hadn't and guess what, they allowed them to run. What's the point? We'll see how particular they are this year.   Nigel Jones

  7. For those of you busy making number holders, the standard Stacy numbers are
    110mm x 150mm (4 1/4" x 6") with the number itself 90mm high (31/2")

  8. We are, and have been trying to enforce the vertical number rule for some time. Saloons are generally the main culprits. Its not just a whim of Neils, the reason is simple, marshals find it very difficult to read angled numbers stuck behind a sloping windscreen or rear window. On long sections when the car is moving it is sometimes easy to misread a number, so its ultimately for your benefit. We will be asking the scrutineer to pay particular attention to this, so get fabricating a number holder, you have been warned. Stuart Harrold
