Christmas Quiz - Question 3

Our final question this year is from Cliff Morrell who sent this photo. Click Here for a Bigger Picture

My interest is that I owned and trialled the 4 wheel ‘Tiger’ XOR 500
which is the vehicle shown on the left of the picture prior to me owning
it from May 1963. This was one of only 16 or so cars in the country then.
(It still sort of exists, was ‘rebuilt’ from a box of parts a few years
ago by a man in Colchester and this year was sold to someone in Germany
for in excess of £50,000 !!!)

I entered it in MCC events in 1963 and 1964 and in fact got a 1st on
the 64 Exeter.

This copy from the original photo was given to me by the concessionaires
for the TG500 Testwood Motors who were at Totton, near Southampton.
They imported these cars and modified and entered 2 or three of them
from 1959 to about 1962 in all sorts of events, trials, rallies and
speed hill climbs.

They also raced cars at the MCC Silverstone meetings in the early 60s.
(I have race programmes from 1960 and 1961)

The driver in the picture is Ken Piper (black hair and moustache) who
was one of Testwoods drivers, the car is of course generally known as a
Messerschmitt and the main bodyshell was identical to the 3 wheeler,
with 10 inch wheels instead or the 3 wheeled versions 8 inch, hydraulic
brakes and a 500cc 2 stroke twin engine.

It was actually marketed as a FMR Tg500, they wanted to call it ‘Tiger’
but that name was of course used by other manufacturers, so they
abbreviated it to Tg, but enthusiasts did and still do call it a ‘Tiger’.

The event shown in the picture is some sort of inter regional car trial
with front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and rear engined team members,
other than that I do not know who the other drivers were or where the
event took place,

Year is between 1959 and 1962, cannot be more specific than that.

I realise that it is of limited interest but someone out there may
remember such events, I can recall watching televised inter region
Sporting trials which took place in Wendover woods, so perhaps the event
in the photo was something similar for Production cars?

Would love to know more,

Trials Marlin for Sale on EBay

Click Here to goto the Ebay page

From Andrew Browns site we learn:-

"This car has a lengthy history. It was first converted for trials use by Terry Mattin, then sold onto Tony Squires in Summer 1998. Tony campaigned it for three years before selling it to Patrick Robotham in Summer 2001. Patrick kept it for nearly four years before it was sold to Julian Lack who used it for the 2005 Lands End (only) after which it was resold once again to Richard Clarke - the present owner"

Bowler Nemesis EXR

From an off-hand comment at work, I happened upon this, the Bowler Nemesis EXR.

Surfing around Bowler's site it turns out this is some form of "civilised" version of their rally-raid car.

Interestingly though, the link for engine info takes you out to Jaguar's engine tech-info website.

So what we have here is a high ground clearance chassis, with good suspension, sump guards and apparently designed to be fitted with a 6-speed manual front-engine, rear-drive power train.

The question is, would it be in class 7 or class 8?

New Photos of Ebworth and Edinburgh Trials

I have finally got around to posting my recent Photos of the Edinburgh triial and the Ebworth Trial.
They can be found here;
For the Edinburgh I was at Carlton, where the weather was great for Photography, with spectacular backdrops and plenty of light. Ebworth was rather different, taking place in a dark wood photography there is always a challenge, cut I think I managed to get a few good ones.
I hope you enjoy them

How was your Edinburgh Trial?

We really enjoyed our Edinburgh. After 20 + years in the Beetle we went open top with my 1172 Dellow in Class 0, a real adventure. We were delighted with the route and the sections, they were great fun without being damaging, for us at least, although there were a couple that I wouldn't have wanted to do in a saloon with limited ground clearance.

I think we climbed all the hills but I'm not bothered about that. For me it was the challenge of getting that old car round the route and driving it back home again. No mechanical problems apart from having to fill it up with water every hour as the radiator is leaking. However, we knew that before the event so were carrying a lot of water and some Radweld in case it got too bad.

The other class 0 competitors we spoke to all enjoyed themselves. Enjoyed the do in the evening although we didn't appreciate the waiting staff hovering to clear your plate away as soon as you finished, even if you hadn't. Also the do didn't seem very well attended and if the hierarchy were present why no speeches?

How was your Edinburgh Trial?

Haven't got mine yet. Anyone know if that's a problem with the post or is it that they haven't been sent out yet?

They are on the members section of the MCC Site though. I see that the route by-passes Litton Slack. Wonder what the problem is.

Carl Talbot hopes to produce CWP sets for E83W axle

I have sourced a supplier of new CWP sets for the E83W axle
There should be two ratios available :

5.571 : 1  =  39 / 7  teeth
5.125 : 1  =  41 / 8  teeth

cost in the region of  £ 260  + post + vat

This is a large saving on the previous quotes [ less than 1/2 price ]  { you could buy both ratios for less than the old price ?     :}

I would really like to get this underway as soon as possible so could do with some definite orders

Help wanted - Sunday 6th September

The Clee Hills organisers are planning a morning doing some sorting out of the ruts on Easthope 1.    The task is simple, a bit of digging to lay the section back to flatish, then retreat to the Longville Arms for a well earned pint.
So we need the help of any able bodied and kindly disposed enthusiasts to help us.
Who can we call on?   You?

Things have Changed Here

You will see that I have changed the Discussion Area to what Multiply call "Blog". This is because this area allows you to use extra features, including the possibility to attach files, easily insert pictures and links etc. Frankly I should have set it this way from the beginning but we learn.....

All the old stuff is still on the site and I plan to add a search feature so you can easily find old stuff. You can probably add a comment to an existing thread in the old area but you won't be able to start a new one.

Sorry for the change but yopu will find it better. I promise :-)

Practical Classics on the Bovey Down Trial

The article that resulted from two Practical Classics journos entering two unsuitable vehicles on this year's Bovey Down trial has been published. Not overly exciting but they clearly enjoyed it and we have some free and fairly benign publicity as a result. Michael how do I attach PDFs or could I just email them over to you to work your technical magic?

Excessive exhaust noise

It ain't just the ACTC council worried about exhaust noise in Devon & Cornwall.

http://www.the-ace.org.uk/loud-exhausts-cost-cash.html

Interesting to see they are talking both about outright volume and tone of exhaust noise....hopefully they'll be concentrating on the kevved-up Corsas in Plymouth rather than on trials entrants but you never know...

MCC Testing Trial 12 July

The MCC put on a great event helped by the weather. Saturdays down poor dampened the ground and Sundays, sunshine with the odd shower made the going interesting. Its not my place to announce results but the same regulars made the quickest times. One has to admire just how fast an Imp and an MG Maestro can be piloted upon wet grass. The long lunch break with an on site burger bar gave all the chance to eat and socialise. I entered an MGB and with enthusiastic driving and soft springs managed to wrap the numberplate over both the top and bottom of the front bumper, like a stick on. It goes without saying that the boys and girls upon the bikes were even quicker than the cars. Our Celia still with a strapped wrist and the larger than life Yoshi, took home trophies. If you did not go there is always next year, if you can wait that long for a good day out.

Anyone want an Imp

I have an Imp, had a wild idea about using it for class O. Its a spares or repair needs to much welding for me, rear arches and rear floor. Its a late model imp alternator and heated rear screen very posh! paintwork tatty poor black respray over gold original. Engine runs and it drives .No brakes. It has been in dry storage for about 8 years then on my drive for the last 4 months. Fibreglass bonnet.

Anyone interested before it goes on Ebay.

or Item Number 160342312959
The car has lots of the legal requirement stuff done; Fire Extinguisher, Number Mounts, Bash Plate etc, but still needs a little work to bring it up to standard: Exhaust and Spare Wheel Mount, but would suit some one who has more time than money. The car is in Warwickshire just off the M42

How was your Ilkley Trial

Mine was wet and muddy! We were in the select group of classes 3, 4 and 5 running at the back of the field. This meant that the grass had gone from the sections when we got there so we were battling a sea of mud. Nevertheless it wasn't too bad until we got to the Ellers/Peels Wood complex when the rain started in earnest during our two hour wait. Ellers was canceled for class 0 and beyond but we had a go at Peels Wood. A few miles up the road we had another wait of an hour and a half at Wilsons Wood which was finally canceled when Edward Broom got his Escort stuck on a tree stump.

This is when the rain really got heavy and our select group of around ten was very grateful that the burger van waited for us, even though it was nearly an hour since he had seen the last car. Incline was deserted when we got there but we had a go at Watergate and the section in the quarry. It was now gone 5 and we had a monsoon when we got to a deserted Peels Wood for what would have been our second gp had there been any marshals. The final four sections took a bit of finding but the stalwart marshals were still on duty so we had a go. We particularly enjoyed the last sections at Browns Wood as we not only saw a section ends board but actually drove past it!

We got to the finish at about 7 pm for our pie and peas supper. A lot of people had gone already, especially those who had a long drive in wet clothes. We left about eight when a very provisional set of results were posted http://classicalgas.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!9D45C19A8B93429F!3611.entry

On reflection maybe a lot of the grassy sections were ambitious in the conditions but I am sure the organisers will learn from that.

How was your Ilkley trial? And did anyone see Tiff in action?

Looks Like the Ilkley Trial will be on Fifth Gear!

I see number 25 in the Ilkley Trial entry list is Tiff Needell and Tom Ford on a Ural in Class D. So it looks like something coming up on Fifth Gear! Lots of TBA's about the bike but I would have though its likely to be a bit heavy.

Looking at their website http://www.ural-motorcycles.com/index.php?products I see they do Sidecar Drive models.

They are running at the back of the bikes so I guess early car numbers like Stuart and Dudley should get top see them perform. Here is the Ilkley entry list http://www.ilkleymotorclub.org.uk/Classic/entries.htm

btw watch out for trialling in Practical Classics as their team were out in force on the Bovey the other week.

Lands End Trial 2009 - In car with James Shallcross in his 205

Nice in car Video by James, at least until Bishops Path where a driveshaft broke. You can see how small the restart box was on Felons Oak!

Even more photos of the Lands End

have finally completed ssorting out the photos of the lands end.

I was at the start at Plusha, at Sutcombe for most of the entry, I missed a few of the early Bikes, and of course at Blue Hills 2, where I missed both the early bikes and few of the last of the cars.

I have broken the photos down into groups by location and class, and they can be found here:--

I hope you enjoy. If you want better quality copies pleae let me know, but don't expect an answer to quickly as I'm running a bit of a backlog.

Lands end videos

Not sure if you get a post announcing that I have put Videos in the library, but just iuncase I'll post here. One is my in car from Class O, not every section because sometimes we get too excited and forget to turn the camera on, but a good selection. And then a few from the tail end of the field, we went back to Blue Hills after we finished.

Bovey Down Trial on 26 April

Windwhistle's 5th Bovey Down single venue clubsport trial on Sunday 26th April is fast approaching now that the Lands End is over. Hope you all had a great Easter weekend and remembered to take the sun block. The closing date for entries for Windwhistle's annual trial is this Saturday 19th and so far I've received 33. Due to the constraints of the venue we are only accepting 40 although we could stretch it a bit.

Two journalists from Practical Classics have entered in a Hillman Super Minx and a Triumph Dolomite 1850 so it will be interesting to see how they get on on Normans Hump, Clinton, etc. The planned feature is along the lines of 'look how much fun you can have in your classic car for very little money' so we are hoping they wont be disappointed. Anyway if you were thinking of entering you'd better get your skates on. Marshals welcomed, as usual. Give me a ring on 01460 53645 evenings before 9.00 p.m. or email anne.whellock@btconnect.com

Lands End Pasties

Pasties ? What pasties ? OK I knew that 2009 L.E. was the same as 2008 without a detour half way up the Roost and without the Pasties ! We had a great event. Not easy but achieved our own goals. Ceila had a tumble upon Blue Hills, a bit more than a "Wasp sting" but is now up and about with her arm in plaster. The boys upon Blue Hills 2 were very quick to their aid and all credit to them. Any one asking Roger and his team for the same again 2010 ?

Hi Res photo of Lands End

Hello all

Sean Moriarty passengered David Malin in the Buckler on the Lands End. He is writing up his adventure for Motorsport News and wants some decent high res images for a short news story. This is for this week's edition and it goes to bed tonight so anyone with a decent high res shot, preferably from Blue Hills please email it direct to Sean ASAP. No guarantee it will be used but you may just get your photo published! sean.moriarty@haymarket.com

A full feature will follow in a few weeks time.

Thanks all

Lands End Trial 2009

I've been a marshal on various motor sport events over the years but since I've been trialing, this was my 1st MCC marshals duty.
I was one of the team of marshals on Crook Horn Hill - Observed Test No 1 and was amazed at the number of competitors who didn't know what to do as regards to line B, my position. Many waited for some sort of signal from me as to when to start after they stopped, or didn't know that they had to stop astride line B or roll/drive back and then drive forward and stop astride line C. It was a "Special Test" NOT a re-start. The most at fault were the bikers, Now I know it's difficult reading the route card/instructions on your own and in the dark and I, as a driver have a bad memory and constantly ask my navigators to repeat instructions to me, but come on guys an girls we all read the instructions before the event don't we, so that on the night all we need is a quick look as a reminder.
Having said all that I had a great night out seeing the effort and skill displayed by the vast majority of competitors and will appreciate even more the dedication of the regular marshals who do it week after week.
If I marshal the same post next year please check what you're supposed to do BEFORE you arrive at line B of the observed test.
I'm off now to catch up on some more sleep, like most of you.

Photos of the Kyrle and the MGCC Trial

At last I've got round to posting the photos of my last two events.

The MGCC Trial at Lintridge Farm was a great day out, with relative few entries, some double driven, and all the sections fairly close I've organised this trial by Make of car rather by section, but I think it works OK.

http://hoits.smugmug.com/Other%20Trials/750895

The Kyrle I've organised by section. I did Jack & Jill, and Frans Folly and as usual had a great time.

http://hoits.smugmug.com/Classic%20Trials/751232

Now has anyone any good ideas where I should be for the Lands End?

How did the Kyrle go yesterday?

Wasn't there as I was involved with one of our local trials at Eddlesborough (won by Ed Nikel to follow up his victory on the MGCC Spring Trial last week). How did it go?

Class 8 Special for sale

Well it's not yet a class 8 special but it would make a very tidy and competitive trials car: http://photobucket.com/sandrailbuggy

This is what the seller says:
This is a really nice Sand rail type buggy. It's powerd by a Passat engine. All alloy body in really nice condition. I do not know much about these things we just took it in as part of a deal. It is registered in 1971 so no road tax. MOT is until Aug. We have spent some money on it such as a full service and valet. It's just ready to go. We need to get around the £3,500 mark which it owes us but are open to realistic offers. But not silly offers!! I think it's worth every penny.
Phone peter on 07767888737 for more info. I can e mail photo's if required.

Hallo to you all. Many of you have sponsered me for the last few years as I enter Race For Life to raise money for Cancer Research in memory of my Daughter, the mother of Alex whom many of you will have met at trial scrutineering. This year in June I will again attempt to raise as much money as possible for this cause. I know we are in a "Credit Crunch" But can I please ask you to support me if you can. You can donate on my website http://www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/juney/

Hi everyone, I've just posted my photos of wood lane and Greenway Lane 3, on Smugmug. i'm pleased to say that I've got lots of Photos of the Winner, but that's because it was my favorite car on the trial, not because I'm any good at predicting winners. Photos can be viewed here:-

Kingpin Tyres (Again)

I spoke to B.I.T.S. in Bristol today and was told that 15" remolds are hard to make as they can't get hold of good casings. They will make then as and when!

The 13" are available at about £12 but again as and when they have casings to make them on.

Anyone interested in helping to make up a large order can email me direct at reg.salway@talktalk.net and I'll put it through my account with them, via my work.
I'm in Bristol but get around the country so could deliver or meet you somewhere.

Mechanics Trial by John Hammill

Hello Michael - Sorry you weren’t able to join us today at the Mechanics Trial. I was running the start at Section 2, Alf’s Delight, and managed to take a few photos when the opportunity arose. So, here are four shots from a beautiful sunny Spring morning in Gloucestershire – so sunny that the glare has compromised the quality somewhat, but feel free to use them as you see fit. In order of appearance:

Start of the section, a glorious climb up through woodland onto Stinchcombe Hill on the edge of the Cotswold escarpment.

SDMC member Terry Coventry’s immaculately restored Class 8 Marlin, which he campaigned very successfully a few years ago, with the equally immaculate Troll of Nigel Moss following.

The superb Trojans of Steve & Phil Potter and John Whilton, last seen with frozen windscreens at the Haynes Museum on the Exeter; quite a contrast in conditions!

The HRG of SDMC member Stuart Roach, with Dave Wall passengering. The following vehicle is the Peter Treliving Austin 7, being driven today by Emma Wall.

Eligible Vehicle for Trialling

Would there be any way that a commercial vehicle, and in particular a pickup, be eligible for trialling without possibly having to go into Class 8 as a special? I see that the Blue Book Section J 59 and 62 mentions cars and saloon, closed, sports or touring car but is that it with no leeway?

Kingpin Remould Tyres

I have managed to source some Kingpin remoulds of the approved pattern....

175/80R14 are £25 each
165/80R13 - price TBC

We are still working on 175/80R13 and 15" if anyone is interested let me know.....

New site a success?

Whilst I realise that Mike was probably given no option but to "migrate" and has had to put valuable time into the transition, can I put my head over the parapet and say that the layout of the new site is not remotely as 'user friendly' as the old one?

I am also not too sure about the ads. inviting me to "Be Naughty" .................

Mike, have you found fewer people viewing and posting since the change?
