Excessive exhaust noise

It ain't just the ACTC council worried about exhaust noise in Devon & Cornwall.

Interesting to see they are talking both about outright volume and tone of exhaust noise....hopefully they'll be concentrating on the kevved-up Corsas in Plymouth rather than on trials entrants but you never know...

  1. Electric Trials cars it is then. Apparently they have a lot of torque but then some would complain about torquing too loud.

  2. From John Blakeley, ACTC scrutineer, who has been monitoring sound levels on trials this year with a sound meter:

'As a point of reference the police readings are interesting. Although we have not taken many noise readings yet, our cars are making higher readings. I appreciate what I have got so far are snap readings taken on restarts but 109db is not uncommon with 119db being the highest so far. Hopefully we can get more info when the season restarts. Regards John'

Blimey. The Police gave someone a fixed penalty for making 103Db and we're commonly making 109Db and some louder than that...it would be nice to think that people might be considering ways of making their exhausts quieter this summer to save John some awkward conversations in the near future....and to prevent the sort of bad publicity that might follow if Devon & Cornwall police ever come near to one of our events with one of their 7 sound meters!

  3. "During the first trial in Newton Abbot, Devon, a driver was fined £30 when his car exhaust was making more than three times the acceptable level of noise"

....doesn't say if it was a Blue Anglia Estate :)

  4. blue anglia estate is on summer holidays in garage , so no noise at moment , owner is rather busy keeping the other half happy decorating the dinning room . The mountain goat usually makes more noise when she gets excited in the woods at woolston and at simms

  5. Many off us have one off exhaust systems, most with a single box. Anyone offering guidance/advice re quieting down a system. The importance of a second silencer box and the relative sizes first to second box. The effect of pipe bore size upon noise.

  6. Good idea Jonathan. I'm not qualified in any sense to comment on one-off systems. But most Beetle systems are modular and, surprisingly enough, a 'quiet pack' silencer is much quieter than a 'glasspack silencer' and in most cases is a direct swap. In my experience making this change had no effect whatsoever on the performance of my buggy but it did make it a lot quieter. Hopefully this is an obvious enough clue to those still uncertain whether their car is one of the ones making too much noise!
