Historic Sporting Trials Association

  1. Thanks for posting that Mark, terrific!

I think with car trials there may be some parallels with what happened in Pre 65 bike trials, by about the mid 1980s entries were dropping off quite quickly. A number of riders were pushing the engineering boundaries to the limits and sections were getting harder and in some cases dangerous. A lot of riders simply left their genuine original bikes in the shed and stayed at home.

Then two things happened: Some clubs included classes for newer bikes (twin-shocks) but, importantly, ran 2 routes and other clubs went back to easier sections more suited to the average rider on an original bike.

Both are successful, the top riders with trick bikes moved towards the clubs running 2 routes and more riders with original bikes appeared back in the saddle as well.

  2. Apologies if you can't read the flyer, this is what it says...

The Historic Sporting Trial Association has been formed to provide suitable events for sporting trial cars built between 1952 and 1974.

Do you have, or know somebody with, an old Cannon, Alexis, Dellow or other trials special built to the old RAC National Trials Formula or 750 Motor Club rules.

Our aim is to run a class for cars from the 1952 to 1970 era that are still in period specification and running period engines such as the 1172 Ford sidevalve and BMC A series.

We propose to have a separate class for cars built between 1971 and 1974 running on 15" wheels.

We are looking to hear from anybody that would have an interest in these events. At this stage, even if you do not have a car or if your car is not ready please don't hesitate to contact us:

  5. I'm sure that Ian and Martyn will agree that as long as it meets the National Trials Formula that's fine. The idea is to get as many of these old cars as possible out on the hills again. It's not intended to be too serious, but rather an opportunity to put some good old motors to use again, rather than let them be modified beyond recognition for other events.

  6. I'm looking forward to seeing a brace of Austin 7 based specials out again, I remember reading an article in a 1970's Car Mechanics about building an Austin 7 based 'mudplugger' when i was a teenager!
