Car Tyres for MCC, air pump

First of all, sorry about the username can not seem to change it at the mo!!

Just done the Tarker in my 205 GTI, I manged to get some tyres that didnt have M+S writen on them!
I can now get kingpin remolds from the wholesalers which I am hoping are going to be a bit cheaper!
I have entered the Exeter, just checking the tyre rules as long as they havent got M+S written on them, there ok to use?!

Also the navagater refused to help pump the tyres up after each section,!!! So looking to rig up a air pump with a cylider, advice needed on that one please!

  1. Jason - these are the tyres you can use http://www.actc.org.uk/how/Approved%20Tyre%20List%20Cars%20Sep08.pdf   I got my compressor from Matt Savage http://www.mattsavage.com/acatalog/compressors.html   Could be cheaper to get a new passenger   Michael

  2. Hi Jason,

Welcome to the world of trialling! I have only been competing since Easter but I am hooked - its great to see another 205 will be out and about - we have some work to do to beat the Golf's though!

Most of the Kingpin remoulds are on the ACTC list - it might be worth getting in touch with Nick Cleal who is another 205 trials driver, as he has bought a batch of suitable Kingpin tyres at a very good price, email me and I will get you in touch with him.

We started out with a co2 bottle+regulator to use for tyre inflation, which was great as it inflates tyres very quickly but it has been ditched in the quest for weight reduction and has been replaced with a compressor mounted in the engine bay where the standard jack is usually bolted. I recommend you get the best you can afford, there are loads of different compressors out there, some are useless (usually reflected in the price!) and some are very good. For me I didnt want to be hanging around waiting ages for a compressor to inflate, also I wanted it to fit within the rather tight confines of the 205 engine bay, I ended up going for one made by ARB (who make lots of nice 4x4 stuff) as it was the only one that would fit in the allocated space, but was still actually any good.

What mods have to made you your 205 so far ?

  3. Cheers for the advice guys,   Is the ACTC tyre list for just MCC events or does that include ASWMC events to?   What was the compressor model from ARB? Do you run a cylider with that as well? The one from Matt Savage looks ok, but a good one is 짙270 for a complete kit!! Me being tight agian!   The 205 is a Autocross car so is sporting a roll cage a bucket seats , which is complety not needed, but seems a shame to take it all out! Is fitted with a sump gard and steel wheels etc.... Have put 205 Dieasl springs/shocks on the front which has lifted the front up ok, the back I have yet to lift up, this was a big disavatge on the Tarka! Unshore as yet how iam going to turn this in the Golf beater!!!!!!!   Will email you for that number, are you doing the Camel on the 7th? Anyone on Facebook?!   Cheers Jason

  4. There is the Range Rover air suspension compressor, if you
want to build it in it comes already in a module with relays etc. You just need
a live and earth, a few pipe fittings and a hose.
I was offered one for £45 a couple of years ago as a
    price guide, try ebay maybe?

    Good luck,

  5. Hi Jason,

See if you can find a Range rover air suspension compressor. They are
quite compact and work very well. There's one cheap on eBay at the
moment, look for item 220308642056. The big lump on the side is an air
dryer so you can probably remove it. A good pump like this will work
well even if you don't have a reservoir. I just run mine straight into
    the air line.

If you have tyres that are on the ACTC list, you will have no problems
with the scrutineers at any trial. Some trials will let you run other
tyres, some won't. Before you splurge on tyres, have a look at what
other class 1s are using. Good tyres can make a big difference.

I saw you on the Tarka. I was driving the strange looking green class 8
buggy. I'll be at the Camel as well. I would suggest changing the back
window to plastic and the rear suspension needs much more lift. Ground
clearance is always a problem so it may be worth seeing if you can lift
the front any further as well. You may be able to get away with putting
spacers between the suspension turrets and the wings but be very careful
because if you go too far you can do quite a bit of damage to the
driveshafts and/or transmission. A safer way is put spacers under the
springs. While the roll cage is nice it adds weight. You want as little
weight as possible and every bit counts. Some people replace the
tailgate with light weight glass or carbon fibre but this gets
expensive. I put my buggy on a severe diet over the summer and now it
climbs far better than it did before.

By the way, wher are you based?

  8. Take another look at the Matt Savage one.   Then take a look here: http://www.paddockspares.com/pp/NEW_PRODUCTS/Compressors/Portable_12v_Compressor_-_SPECIAL_OFFER.html   Mine is a few years old and seems fine - bolted into the back of the Dutton with an extension to the air inlet filter to put it into the book out any water flying around,  - works rather well in blowing up 175/80/14 tyres from next to nothing (where allowed of course) to road pressures in not long at all.    Not worth the hassle of mucking about with second hand compressors from anywhere else really - which was where I was originally going when I wanted one.   Bri
