15 inch tyres

I cut through the side wall of a Vredstein Sprint S80, 165 R15 during the Exeter.

I am now informed that this tyre is no longer avaliable and will be replaced by an alternative but not until April. A Firestone F560 seems the only alternative, but does any one out there have any recommendations?

  1. Try a Nexen SB302 if you can't get Firestones.

  3. I understand the new Vreedstein is available, the Sporting Trials boys have been testing them since last October. I have found that Harold's Tyres in Penrith (01768 864361) are helpful. They are into Sporting Trials so used to supplying 165x15 tyres.

  5. Firestone prefered, Nexen next best. Lots of the Escort boys use Nexens (In 13" of course) I'm told that the new Vredestein is not as good as the Sprint

  6. 165 x 15 are now very hard to come by, remoulds almost impossible. 185s seem to be impossible since the demise of the Matador. Quite simply, 165 and 185 high profile tyres are not put on modern cars, so new tyres and remoulds are getting more difficult to obtain. Class 3 and 5 cars are allowed to run 195 x 15 (60 profile I think) tyres and these seem to be in good supply. Should we be asking our rule makers to to allow class 8 to go one tyre size wider or are we all going to end up having to run expensive 18inch Mitchelin crossplys.

  7. talking tyres whatis the largest rim size for a tr7 ,i started the exeter on 13s only to find others using 14s

  8. As an observation, having lined-up at French's, and ran immediately behid the trio of TR7's on this last Class '0' Section, French's, I believe that these TR7's, being in Class '0', need comply with but Class 8 vehicle requirements. By which I understand 14", even 15" rims (if suited), would present no issue on eligibility.
As an aside, with some 75 competitors in Class '0', with some experienced triallists, has time come to use a class structure within Class '0'?
Upon your technical issue of eligibility of 14" rims on a TR7 in Class 5, I leave this to the experts.

  9. Adrian: The TR7V8 came on 14" wheels for the US market - so 14" are allowed.
Peter: 185's are not too difficult to find in light van sizes but you do have to look. Nexen 165's seem to be reasonably available also. You do need to surf the net rather than just asking your local tyre man.
In my experience low profile tyres are rubbish grip wise.

  11. No would be my quick answer to the TR question. You might blag that TR2 & 3 were the same model, and possibly 4's with 5's , but the 7 is quite definately a different car.

  14. Mark,

If you look in the Blue Book T 10.6.1 "There are no restrictions on engine tuning provided the cylinder block is off the same manufacture and configuration as the original"

Hence you can use a type 4 engine in a beetle even though it is a totally different engine to the original. Doesn't mention camshafts. IMO configuration is taken as meaning no of cylinders and "Straight", "vee" or "Flat"

So (again in my opinion) if its a Triumph and an upright inline 4 its OK.

I would go for a Dolomite Sprint engine myself :-))

  15. The configuration of the block is taken to include the question is the camshaft in the block (and the valves come to that)? as well as Inline; Vee Boxer etc.
So we're back to the question of was the original TR2 engine OHV or OHC? I thought it was OHV.
