MCC Lands End Trial - Riverton

Whether its because I am tired or just being stupid but I can't find Riverton on the map and the programme doesn't give the OS reference because "no spectators". Can anyone supply the grid reference please? I think I can track down most of the other sections although I am sure it won't prevent me getting lost!
Regards
Brian

  1. Looking on Landranger 180, Riverton is at 639298, just under the North Devon link road, A361, just East of Swimbridge. We've cleaned it & failed it on the North Devon but last time in 2000 it was only for class 8. Rumour has it that the MCC has done some repairs.  Cheers Pete.

  2. Thanks Pete - found it now!   2nd naive question is to do with competitor numbers for bikes. On the Exeter Trial we only had one number to be fixed in a vertical position at the rear of the bike - not allowed on back of crash helmet as I tend to do with other LDTs.   For the Lands End, I have been given two numbers but I can't find fixing instructions. Can I assume that one can go on the headlight surround and the other to be fixed vertically at the rear? Also, it seems that bikes will also have coloured discs (which didn't happen on the Exeter) - I assume these are handed out at sign on? What size are they please as I need to leave space on whatever my number fixings are.   Don't laugh guys - these are serious questions!   Brian

  3. Brian,   I don't have the SSR's at hand but I believe the rules are:-   1. On the bike not on the person 2. Vertical   applying to both number and disc.   Hopefully John Lees will see this and clarify.   Michael

  4. Yes Michael is correct, the front number preferably above the front light and the rear number above the rear light, this way it may be seen in the dark. Excellent material can be obtained from  plastic five gallon oil drums. Cut the ends off ,then cut down lengthways and open it out to produce a three foot by two foot piece of uniformly thick plastic which is incredibly tough. A bit of thinners to remove the Castrol green on one side , and hey presto - useful for all sorts of things!(You should have had two numbers for the Exeter)

  5. Thanks Michael and John - sorted! Just been out sorting out some wiring to backlight my roadbook on the TTR250 - everything still works so happy with that. Too cold to fit the new MT43 front tyre though. I made the mistake of selling my old TTR with a nearly new MT43 (fitted for the Exeter) on it and have been waiting nearly a month for a replacement from my usual bike shop, CMS in Exeter, and started to panic a bit. Contacted a new guy in the business, Martin Champion from Buckfastleigh, and picked one up last night. He had rung around all the tyre wholesalers he knew and I think I got the last one in the UK - thank mate! Shame about the format of the routes from starting points to North Petherton as they are too wide to fit the roadbook holder and I can't face retyping them. If I reduce them on the photocopier I won't be able too read them on the bike. Are the route details available electronically does anyone know please? Brian

  6. Brian, I don't think that the route is available electronically. Maybe we should lobby the MCC to have it available. It make things much easier and SAFER if you have the route displayed in a format that you are familiar with and can read on the fly. We don't have a 'bag of spuds' next to us to read it!   I have scanned mine and OCRed it. You are welcome to have a copy by email. It's no problem to rescan the Plusha route if you need it.

  7. Thanks for the offer Mark but I only just picked up the message. I have reduced the page on a photocopier and attached it to the rest of the route card but I have pretty much memorised the route on the map coz having tested the back lighting on the route book holder tonight it is very difficult to focus on! I need to focus on a few other bits and pieces now tomorrow - I love the last minute panics don't you? NOT!   I had better get to bed now but best of luck to all - weather looking good for us - I just hope I can fulfill my ambition to ride Darracott Hill having watched the cars and bikes on that hill when I lived at Gooseham as a nipper - a full finish will be a bonus ;o)   Brian

  8. Just found an AutoRoute based route map and timing calculator for the Lands End tucked away on the MCC website - excellent! Another glorious day following a very frosty night - get those thermals out folks! Brian
