under 21's

I have just got back from passengering on the Tamar Trial for Dave Haizelden.Whilst on the event we caught up with a young female driver from Cornwall and during the conversation insurance came up.We discovered that with her loading her entry cost her about £55 compared to Dave's £40,and this restricted  the amount of events she could afford to enter. How about clubs offering a cheaper entry to under 21's by about 10 or 15 pounds? This would level out entry fees with other drivers and possibly encourage younger entrants so in the long run the club would probably not lose out.Once they turn 21 their insurance loading will come down to normal and they could pay the full entry.Younger drivers need encouragement as us slightly older!? ones won't be trialling for ever. How about it or is there something obvious I have overlooked? ...Nick.

  1. sounds good to me. we have to do all we can to encourage the young fraternity, especially with the rising fuel prices. Dave

  2. I am sending this reply weith my organisors 'hat' on. Unfortunatly the MSA fees are based on the number of entrants irrespective of the entrants age. So if clubs offer a reduced entry fee for the under 21's it will have to come from the small profit that a club hopes to make on an event. Sorry to put a damper on theis good idea. Stuart Harrold

  3. Not necessarily Stuart - the rest of us could pay a pound or two more to subsidise and encourage the under 21s.  I'd be happy to do that. Though please nobody suggest discounts for over 65s or organisers really will start making a loss

  4. Sadly this is true - someone has to pay for it.  Of course older members could pay more so that under-21s got cheaper entries, but how popular would that be?  My motorcycle insurance doesn't cover me for competition so in common with many others I have had to pay extra for this for years.  It's just one of those things - you choose what you spend your money on, whether under 21 or pensioner.

    Yours,

    Celia Walton

  5. If we could encourage just a few under 21's at a lower entry fee, perhaps if they get the bug and lose their novice status they may be prepared to pay the full fee from then on? Or perhaps the older drivers should support / sponsor the younger drivers!   Regarding insurance, I have read 20% of our premiums are used to cover the uninsured drivers involved in accidents. How many of those drivers are under 21?.   Forgetting the financial aspect, how many young drivers go out in their hot hatches and have accidents due to their total lack of experience in what to do when the car gets off the straight and narrow. What better place to learn than under supervised conditions in an open field?

  6. Celia I understand the fact that most of us pay insurance for competition seperately but the point I was getting across was the fact that the 'under 21's' have a loading which means their insurance is about thirty quid compared to our thirteen fifty for cars, as for Ian's idea I would gladly pay a pound or two extra .I know they choose to do the events but it would be great if we could help surely....Nick

  7. Although not immeiately related, the MSA has just anounced that under 16's will get their first competitions licnce free.    Now we just have to pursuade them to look at the insurance issues.   Alas for Emma & Ryan, it would seem that in the MSA world 18 is OLD!
