Classical Gas Christmas Quiz 2011 Question 3

Same as Q2. I would like to know When, Where and Who, and all about the car as well. I know some of the answers but not all so you could be adding to the history of the sport! This is a different type of question to the first one. I don't plan to respond until Boxing day evening, leaving respondents to confirm or challenge their co-competitors answers!

Thanks to Nigel Brown for this question.

Independent Panel On Forestry Progress Report

As many followers of this site are involved in the use of forests either through our sport or for recreation and have also had input in the debate on forestry use, some may be interested in the Progress Report published recently.

We in Fell Side Auto Club make extensive use of Forestry land for the Northern Trial and if that was curtailed we simply would not have a competition. Over the years we have built up a teriffic working relationship with local Forestry representatives and indeed one in particular has actually found us new sections in the past such is his understanding now of our requirements.

To keep our trial, and others, going that use forestry land we need entries. Please try your very best to enter the Northern Classic Trial on the 18th February 2012. We cater for all classes including Class O and bikes and would love to see old faces and new. February will see three brand new sections and the return of one or two from the past but tweaked to keep you on your toes!!!

Camel Classic

Not that is was muddy on the Camel Classic today !

Welcome to Tom Jones

Hi Michael.

Ive just joined your classical gas group under the user name TJEngineering. My name is Thomas Jones. I trialed a blue MK1 escort a few years ago. I am looking to get back into trialing. I really want a class 8 special but am finding it hard to find one, could you help me with this. I am also thinking about building one myself if nothing comes along. My Dad Martin Jones converted the green Dingo to classic trials many years ago. And my brother drove it to the championship before he sold it to the late Peter Fear. Ive been racing for the last few years, being lucky enought to drive some very special cars in historic racing. But I do love trialing. If there is any thing you can help me with please dont hesitate to contact me.

Thanks Tom

Blue Hills Mine

If you havent seen it yet, Blue Hills Mine is the MSA Magazine Readers Awards Venue of the Year. Never been there myself but what will that do for the publicity of Classic Trialling amongst MSA members? Brilliant news and a nice write up in the magazine.

Changes in 2012 Blue Book

Allen Trial

Having decided to concentrate on PCT's up to the Exeter we marshalled on this years Allen.

Our group of three was allocated to Chimney in The lakeside complex where we were welcomed and well looked after by Colin Biles. With alternate routes for different classes I was directing traffic at the fork, moving the tape according to instructions radioed from the start. Although I have been to this complex before I hadn't realised it was an old coal mine. The chimney, still visible amongst the trees, was part of the winding engine and the mounds are slag heaps.

Most of the first half of the entry failed, whichever route they took. Carl Talbot was a notable exception on the 1-6 route, going clean while most under steered into the trees. It was strange but as the afternoon went on we got more clears here, although it became more and more slippery.

Classes 7 & 8 went up Pete Harts new bank http://youtu.be/qlnGdJ5tY58 which as you can see took a lot of work to create. We only had three cleans, all in class 8 after a restart. Dean Partington, Charlie Shopland and Dean Yarranton. Unfortunately this route had to be cancelled towards the end after a couple of incidents of cars ending up in the trees but I'm sure Pete and his team will sort this for next year.

How was your Allen Trial?

The Peak District National Park, BBC4 9.00pm, 30 Oct.

I have just watched an "eye opening" hour long programme called "Tales from the National Parks" on BBC4. It was part 2 of a series based on the Peak District.

It was a programme about the villagers of Gt Longstone v "off roaders" v National Park Authority v The Council. Basically the villagers want a local BOAT closed to off roaders. Well worth watching, especially as it seems that the Park Authority do not want any particular group banned from the Peak District. It was a pity that the tone of the reporter made out that the off roaders were the villians, as usual.

Can be seen on the BBCi player for the next seven days. Programme broadcasted on Sunday 30th October at 9.00 pm, on BBC4.

Wanted Marlin hood dead or alive.

I need a marlin hood for a long wheelbase anything considered good bad or indifferent, please don't be shy as i have literally nothing to even copy to fabricate a hood so that grotty torn hood you replaced  may be just what i am looking for as i said above ANYTHING CONSIDERED.
I am at the stage now where i am thinking about making some sort of lift off hard top to fit between the screen and the roll cage, this route is obviously fraught with complications so hence my last ditch attempt to find  at least a old hood as a template before i venture in to the unknown.  HELP

My Edinburgh Trial

I was entered in Class 0 in my Sidevalve Dellow. However, a lazy summer meant I hadn't fixed the car since breaking it on last years trial. Decided to go up and take pictures rather than use the Beetle.

We spent the morning at Barmford and saw all the bikes and 75% of the cars. It was bone dry of course and very rough. Star climb of the day went to the guy on the old BSA Bantam who rode up as if it were a flat main road. Not so many of the other motorcyclists. We reckoned at least 25% of them fell off. Either in trying to get away from the restart or easing off to much for the final slab and loosing all momentum.

Many of the cars suffered from to much grip and there was a constant smell of fried clutch. This caused quite a problem for some of the higher geared re starters on the restart, their wheels wouldn't break traction and ease the pressure on the clutch resulting in stalling. There were some very impressive climbs by some of the seemingly endless procession of Suzuki's which without a restart made light work of the old hill.

We were in good company on Bamford. Pete & Carlie Hart, Mal & Donny Allen, Julian Lack, fellow non-starter Richard Peck and Tony Rothin, there to see Nick Farmer in his old car just some familiar faces. Oh and I nearly forgot El Presidente, sorry Jonathan.

Moving on to Excelsior we saw the last half of the cars, including a few Class 0's. The restart on the corner is past its sell by date. If the hole gets any deeper it will be down to a coal seam. Despite this it didn't present too many problems. Apart from those who started to spin their wheels and were rapidly given a fail and told to stop by the restart marshal. Lets hope this didn't cost anyone a triple.

How was your Edinburgh Trial?

Edinburgh Trial

After looking over the 2011 routecard, I am not 100% sure if Class 1 are doing Riley's Rise this year or not. If we are, then there is 1 typo and if we aren't, there are 4. For the moment I am going to assume we are, as I would like to see this new hill. Can anyone confirm this for me ?

Kingpin 14" Tyres

I have managed to get a batch of Kingpin 175/80/14 remoulds with the "correct" pattern (which seems to have a different name depending on who you talk to). If anybody wants some please contact me or Dave Haizelden or leave a note here and I'll get in touch.

They are £27.50 each or £25 for 4 or more. We can either bring them to the start of a trial or if needed I can courier them out for £7.50 a pair.

I hope this will be of help to some people as it seems a lot of the possible sources of these tyres have dried up!

Peugeot 205 rear Suspension

Earlier this year I asked for suggestions on raising the suspension of my 1360cc 205. You guys did'nt let me down and I acted on your advice.

So far I have increased the height of the front of the car using a pair of 405 Springs.

I have just raised the rear by adjusting the Torsion bars. However on attempting to refit the rear Shocks I found they needed to be approximately 25mm longer. It was suggested to me that 306 units would be the answer. Unfortunately looking at these they were the same length (325mm between centres).

Any ideas which shocks I could fit.

Thanks

Nigel

Only Group Members can post comments now

Although only members of this group could initiate threads it has been possible for anyone with a Multiply ID to add a comment to an existing thread. That caused problems on some rare occasions as we did not know the real identity of posters. The difficulty was that there was no setting available to prevent non-members from making a reply to an existing thread.

The good news from my standpoint is that after lobbying Multiply they have put in an option that allows the group to be set so that only group members can comment and that box has duly been checked.

"Censored" Classical Gas

Facebook the march of censorship. If you aren't in the "club" you can't see it!!

I can see from the window in the main Classical Gas that Michael is disappointed that the posts don't all appear. Not as disappointed as I am that the free to see for all message board is become a thing of past and a form of censorship - dig dig :) - has arrived at Classical Gas.

Thinking ahead how will people just be able to browse in the future.

Of course the Facebook mantra of getting everyone in the world on Facebook might come true but personally I believe it to be such a bad idea.

Still it will save me some time every week having a look!

Tyre help!

Evening all! I have started work on RPD4 and need some tyre advice, I am keeping the original wheels so I am looking for suitable crossply tyres, the fronts currently have 3.25 X 19 Firestone, the rears 4.75/5.00 X 18 Mudpluggers,

I have found some 3.50 X 19 Longstone Fronts and some Michelin D.R. in 4.75/5.00 X 18 for the rears, are these allowed?

What about Blockley's, they do a 3.50 X 19 and either a 4.50/5.00 X 18 or a 5.50 X 18 in the 3 block pattern

Thanks, Martin

We have been very active here with a couple of long running threads. Everyone well behaved so far but perhaps its timely to issue a couple of reminders.

  • Everyone is entitled to their view. Sometimes we just have to agree to differ.

Historic Sporting Trials Association

Class Wars!

Time for a debate!

The VSCC runs a series of trials for pre-war cars  that are often well oversubscribed.

The MCC events are usually full to capacity, certainly at the start of the year.

So why aren't ACTC events filled with entries?

I know Classic Trials doesn't mean classic cars but why don't we see more of the older cars entered, they must still exist!?

I reckon it's because the inevitable pushing of boundaries at the top of the classes disuades owners of less competitive cars from entering, not because they see little chance of winning but because they have to punish their cars on the same restarts and obstacles as the top of the class.

Why would anyone with an original side valve Cannon want to struggle with a hill designed to take marks from a fire breathing over bored crossflow Cannon with at least twice the power and a transmission to suit!?

Most Class 8 specials look like sportscars, they are built to sportscar design ideals so I will start the debate rolling by suggesting that side valve Class 8 cars be allowed to run in Class 5. Lets see more side valve specials in use, get them Dellows out boys!

What has happened to the Ford Pops and 100e's? How about letting them run in Class 2 rather than in the same class as Duratec engined Class 3's

Over to you.........

Marlin Trials Tyres

The car runs 185 x 14 at the rear, the 6 covers that I have are starting to get a bit thin and one has a hole in the side wall after traversing the infamous Crackington clay-hiding-sharp rocks horror.

I have used Kingpin Pacers but the factory tells me that they are no longer made. I also enquired after the KS4, but was told they had no stock as they have no tyre cases. In any case if they are available they come in 6 or 8 ply which I think would be too stiff for trials.

Reading this month’s Restart the Matador MP300 sounded promising, but the best availability I could find was a pair of second had ones on Ebay for £83.

Googling the Nexen SB302 produced no results at all. I rang Harold’s Tyres in Penrith and they suggested a Hankook K 715, but this is only available as a 185/80/14.

Looking at the ACTC list I guess the SB302 is a typo and should be the SB802. As far as I can make out it is only available in 185/80/14 size, whereas the Kingpin Pacer is clearly marked 185x14 90P so I assume it has a 90 section. What are the implications of going from 90 to 80 section?

Most of the other tyres on the list seem to be unavailable.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Class 8 Trials Car ‘Six Pence’

Category:   Cars & Trucks
Price:   £3250

The trials season is just around the corner.......

Triumph based Class 8 trials car for sale: AKA 'Six Pence'.

Originally built by Steve Holder - Fortune Engineering near Cheltenham.

Triumph Spitfire chassis and 1500cc engine with fast road cam and twin 1.5" S.U carburettors. New electronic ignition and electric fuel pump recently fitted.

Triumph gearbox and Vitesse final drive open differential including hard steel planet gear pin with needle rollers. Differential ratio 4.1:1.

Independent front and rear suspension with great ground clearance. 14” strengthened rear wheels fitted with part worn King-Pin tyres, and 15” front wheels fitted with Firestone tyres.

Engine is in great condition, lots of oil pressure and a very healthy sounding exhaust note. The roller pin diff has only completed four classic trials and 3 PCT’s since being fitted. All g’box drive gears are quiet and never jump out of engagement.

Other features include: fully fitted custom wet weather soft top hoop including windows (very water tight), bench seat, oil/water temp gauge, oil pressure gauge, engine RPM tachometer, odometer, powerful driving and main beam lights, map/navigation light, large rear tool storage area, twin spare wheel carrier.

First registered 1961 hence TAX EXEMPT.

I have owned this car since 2006, I have thoroughly enjoyed trialling in Six Pence. It is a very reliable and capable car, more capable than my results suggest! With previous owners Six Pence has achieved numerous MCC awards including Gold awards.

Other interests and a young family force sale.

I have many spares for Six Pence, too many to list, but they include: a second freshly refurbished hard steel needle roller open differential (also 4.1:1), a complete Triumph gear box, numerous sets of front and rear wheels/tyres……

Current location is Gloucester.

Contact Daniel on 07917107451 or lt_dan2000@hotmail.com

A great opportunity to compete with much more expensive machinery.

My Ilkley Trial

Enjoyed my annual trialling trip to Yorkshire although I didn't trouble the awards secretary as I had an off day behind the steering wheel.

I thought the organisers had positioned the marker posts to make some of the sections very tight, especially the first Swordpoint section where it was barely possible to squeeze between the 10 marker and a very substantial tree.

I didn't do very well on the new Longside Wood section but those that got round the first hairpin enjoyed the long blast up between the bluebells. We had to wait about an hour for our turn as everyone had to reverse back down but hopefully the organisers will be able to keep this hill for the future.

No problems with our car but we saw Simon Woodall limping with collapsed suspension and James Shallcross had multiple punctures.

Don't know what happened to Dave Haizeldens Escort or Dave Olivers Peugot, both of who retired early on. I know Stuart Bartlett pushed the radiator into the fan on his Midget at the first special test. I can sympathise as we hit the same hillock with a hell of a bang.

We didn't get to the finish until 6.30 but there was still some welcome complimentary food available. The Ilkley is a very different Classic Trial but we enjoy it for what it is. We have done the last five and all being well will return next year.

How was your Ilkley Trial?

My Lands End Trial

Just got home. Really enjoyed the trial. OK the sections were dry and therefore easier than usual but the Lands End is more than a trial, its an adventure where the first test is your own character. Night run was great. The regularity provides that extra bit of interest.

I thought the County Gate Control worked well. Much better place than the pub up the road. We got there a bit early and were there for 50 minutes but parking was under control. Keep it I say.

We hit some mist at times during the nearly hours but not to m uch of a problem. Being dry us Cannon Fodder actually got up Rodneys Revenge and Cutliffe Lane and we really enjoyed the exit tracks rather than the all familiar escape roads.

The club had its revenge on Bishops Wood where we failed the restart so with luck we may get a Silver. Doesn't matter if we don't. Had a great time.

Oh one last thing. How many trailer loads of that clay were dumped on Crackington? We reckon it was three. As an early number we could still see the distinct heaps! Did the job though. Well done chaps.

How was your Lands End Trial?

Marlin Roadsters and class 7

In the engine list for marlin class 7 cars,  there is  no mention of the alffa twin cam engine?
They were a common fit back in the day, even the factory demonstrators were alfa powered apparently, so why omit them from the regulation.?

MG Car Club Spring Trial - Lintridge Farm

Last Sunday I went to the MG CC Spring trial.  Although the entry list was quite small there was a varied collection of cars competing.  Unfortunately the dry conditions meant that many of the hills were relatively easy I think everyone enjoyed themselves.

Discovery Turbo Channel

This Sunday (20th March) the Discovery Turbo on Sky (Ch523) are playing the whole 'Off The Road' series. It starts at 0600 and runs until 1100 then restarts again.

The episodes that maybe of more interest are:

0600 Hill Rally. We follow the fast and furious exploits of a Salisbury Plain Rally off-road team as they battle appalling weather, mud mayhem and mechanical gremlins.

0630 Sporting Trial.
One of the cheapest and oldest forms of off-road motorsport, these sorting trials are deceptive. They look bizarre, but you try driving one of them...

1000 Production Car Trial.
It's a must-see! Everything from Ford Escorts to 70-year-old MGs band together to tackle a series of off-road courses set throughout the Clee Hills.

The full listing can be found here:

Peugeot 205 preparation

I am currently using a 1360cc Peugeot 205 for PCT events and would like to raise the suspension around 50mm front and back. Can anyone offer some advice on how this could be achieved?

My second question is, Is there a preferred method for upgrading the differential?

Thanks Nigel

Proposed Forestry Sell-off

Some sites here that triallers may be interested in looking at regarding the proposed sale of some forests. The Northern and the VSCC's Lakeland Trial rely heavily on the usage of sections within the North Lakes and undoubtedly there are other trials which also use Forestry commission forests. Please support the campaign. Once access is lost or becomes possibly financially unviable we will not get them back, thats for sure. This could be one more of those coffin nails that look to be increasing these days!!!

Windwhistle MC have had to cancel their Bovey Down Trial this year

We would normally now be circulating the regulations and entry form for the 7th Bovey Down Trial in March.  However, at the Windwhistle Motor Club Ltd January committee meeting the decision was taken, for several reasons, not to run the Bovey Down single venue trial this year.

Because Easter is late this year our usual, popular date at the end of April, and at the end of the first half of the trials championship year,  is not available. The March date is not ideal, the committee felt, for our non championship event. Clinton Devon Estate, the landowner, is planning extensive felling at the venue before the trees get infected with sudden oak death disease and although we were OK to use the venue in January for the MCC Exeter Trial (Normans Hump & Clinton) it is by no means certain that the venue will be available to us in March.  The 2010 event attracted fewer entries than the committee would have liked.

This decision to not run the event is not without precedent. We ran the event in 2004, 2005 and 2006.  In 2007 the venue was unusable due to forestry work so the event did not run.  That was the year Normans Hump was not included in the January MCC Exeter Trial despite huge efforts by Terry and Jason Flay in an attempt to reinstate the surface.  Then we ran the event in 2008, 2009 and 2010.  So we trust that by resting the event for a year we can come back in 2012 to our usual end of April, end of the first half of the championship year, slot.

trials recovery

Om this week Mcc news of the week someone is trlating there issues on getting recovered by yhte RAC . Aparantly they would not recover them as they had been taking part ina motor sport event.

Can you recomend another organisation that will come up with the good when you need them.

Dave

Can you identify this event?

Hi,

Been meaning to post a photo of this for ages, can anyone identify this event?

What is obviously the finish is pictured and it is at a pub called The George in the Tree in Balsall Common in the West Midlands, near to Meriden. I have no idea of the year or any other details.

The "original" of this picture is actually a canvas print hanging next to the bar in the very same pub, The George in the Tree. I've asked the staff but not suprisingly they have no idea what the vent is/was.

A long shot, but thanks.

Lands End Trial 2011

The Supplementary Regulations and Entry Form are now available for downloading from the MCC website at: http://www.themotorcyclingclub.org.uk/about/downloads.htm

My Clee Hills Trial

Well I enjoyed my day in the mud! Lots of new ideas, some working better than others. We cleaned the VSCC's "one reverse permitted" section at Pinstones with 4psi in the rear tyres! As we went clean it must have been a good section although there were mutterings at the finish from many!

What a difference at Easthope 1. Traditionally you blast up until you belly out in the ruts. This year it had been graded and you blasted up until you sunk in the mud! I understand James Shallcross got his Peugeot to the 2 or 3. Superman or what? Always a good section though.

Hated Hilltop (used instead of Ipikins Rock), probably because I floundered in the mud at the start and slipped into the 12 marker, stopping just after and would have slipped sideways down the bank if John White hadn't steadied the car.

Similar issue on the Harley Special Test. On a technical note are you allowed to hit markers unpenalised on The Clee?

Loved the new "traditional" sections at Heywood Common (new) and Castle Hill (new last year), Adrian T-P told me Heywood Common had been used in the past and he remembered it from his Pop days. He was very disappointed that Hugerford had to be scrubbed when their work clearing the exit track had been undone by a very large tractor when a bank collapsed.

Personally I enjoyed Far Gatten (Gattens Gamble in reverse) but others didn't. I know there were big holes but there was plenty of grip and you didn't have to go any faster going up than coming down!

Also enjoyed the transit through the gliding club to get to Priors Holt. Well done MAC.

Was surprised how Priors Holt 2 had deteriorated since last year. Don't know why but I reckon its only time before the ruts become so deep it becomes unusable.

With an early start scheduled for Monday we turned for home as soon as possible after signing off and arrived back in Bedford just before 7.

How was your Clee?

A query about tyres, tools and weight in Class 1 cars

Hello all, after doing a smattering of trials a few years ago then nothing since I recently realised how much I missed it, so I've bought a Renault 5 and started putting it together.

I was always involved with RWD trials before where loading the the boot up with tools spare tyres and jacks etc was advantageous for traction as well as the inevitable breakdown/puncture.
Now, being new to this FWD malarky I wonder what the deal is? I'm guessing as little weight as poss. on the back end is what you want.
Do you carry lots of tools and two tyres in the boot?

Silly query I know but hope you can help.

Ed
