The Northern Trial 2007 How was it for you?

The Northern Trial for me and my wife was fantastic.
We could not have wished for better weather and there was a good mix of sections for us to attempt.
If you have not done the Northern you have missed spectacular views and some long sections.

I don't think we would ever be in the awards but we had a good days sport!
Our thanks to Fell side club for making us welcome and putting on such a great event! Also to all the marshalls and other officials and clubs who put in so much effort.

Thank you to Chris  who was clerk of the course for his encouragement at the sections and for laying out a superb trial as well.

Cheers and thank you all

  1. I agree with all the above...am sending a tipper truck back to Cumbria with all the mud I've extracted from my car.........   No.65.....who fell into the ditch...several times.....found water and moss up to the wheelarch tops....   no punctures..no breakages....no grip.....excellent.

  2. I thought it was only me who couldn't get a grip! Sorry to all the Marshalls who got swamped by the sea of mud I sent towards them behind my Skoda (note I said behind!) Only our second Trial but loved it. We'll be back......we're loving it!   Nigel Jones Fashionable orange Skoda, car 78.

  3. We thought it was an excellent trial and well worth the 935 mile round trip from W. Cornwall.  The sections were nearly all potential stoppers (certainly for class 4) but also nearly all cleanable with the right amount of comittment.   The day was helped by the stunning weather and therefore views that are even better than you get at the top of Allez Ooop.   One word of warning: Wigton itself seems to be in a bizarre '60s time warp (despite, or perhaps because of) being the birth place of Melvyn Bragg and, as a place to stay before a trial, doesn't have the greatest accommodation, choice of places to eat or real ale outlets.  We would say that Wigton is an experience everyone should have once - and we've had ours!  That being said I can see why the organisers pick it as a start / finish venue as the Stocksman has loads of parking space and flies in the face of the general Wigton level of gastronomy by doing fine breakfasts.   I now share Kelly Thomas' view about losing 6 points if a special test is not completed correctly - see the results for why!   Overall though a great day, well organised and next year just needs more people to bite the bullet and head up to Cumbria.   Pete

  4. Absolutely agree with Pete regarding the stunning weather and unrivalled views and the friendliness & helpfulness of the organisers was excellent & definitely well worth the long (time wise) drive from Bristol on the Friday to do the event.   This was the first time I have traveled to do this but would like to think I will be back next year.   Despite breaking the Car Chassis on Section 6 (Where Eagles Dare) due to a collision with the bank & the subsequent progressive falling apart of the car throughout the day (Panhard Rod, Both Rear Shockabsorbers & the Passenger Mudguard when the suspension collapsed on Sandale) we managed a limp home finish with rope, numerous ratchet straps & a Cumbrian Stick holding the rear suspension in place.   Many thanks to all the marshals who made this event possible.

  5. Agree with all comments (Pete's
    passenger).

I would add, very well organised event, no serious
delays, loads of efficient, friendly marshals, and really good challenging
hills. The club should be very proud of this super event and I would love to be
    able to enter myself.

Even though we are opposite ends of the country I
couldn't help thinking this club is putting on trials very similar to our own,
especially in terms of the type of sections.

Oh, and what a pleasant surprise to pass
nothing but smiling and cheerful members of the general public.

    P.S.
Don't think we'll ever get any coverage of the art
of Classic Trials on The South Bank Show now Pete!

  6. Pete....we stopped at a Premier Travel Inn ...close to Carlisle, just off the M6!   Good basic accomodation...£50 for two of us.....with a  bar over the road, big car park for our huge trailer....and less than 30 mins from the start!   Cheaply- available overnight accomodation is something I have to consider for 99% of all trials I look at entering...only the 'Ilkley' being a local event  for me!   A lot of B&B's simply dont have adequate parking for a car/trailer.

  7. Hi there,   Thanks again to joint Clerk's of course Martin & Chris.   Does anybody have any pictures of me and Caroline in our car No 49 a Red Liege at any of the sections?   Well done David on your result (looks like you have found the right chassis setting now!)   Cheers Steve & Caroline
