Lights . . . and Exeter

As we approach our first Exeter Trial, the occupants of the yeller Dutton are a little concerned about lighting, especially as we can't always see where we are going in daylight!

What are the rules on auxilary lighting?  The same as road rallies/scatters - 4 forward facing beams?

And any suggestions for dumping, sorry, parking, a trailer and tow car somewhere near Cirencester start where it will be okay until Sunday morning?

  1. I believe the use of ''auxiliary'' lighting is frowned upon.....certainly on sections.....and also though villages, QQ's, etc.   I suggest trying some of these new-fangled bulbs in the headlights......????   Or try a different design of headlight unit? [maybe try these new 'projector' light units?]     but surely the REAL issue is, not whether one can ''see'' better....but whether oncoming road users can actually see clearly enough past your headlights?   I think we should do things like the Army do, on sections.......NO lights at all!   [now watch the fight for later running numbers??]

  2. Lights I use the uprated halogen bulbs that are available from Paul Goff Motorcycles ( via the internet) and fit in the standard pop headlight units I find them very good ( "good" is relative compared with modern angel eye lights !! but they are vastly bettter then the original candle power) They arre available in 6 and 12 volt and take only 35 watts so those of us with aging electrics can still use them and not run out of volts on the night run   Unfortunately I will not be out on the Exeter as the post man lost my entry somewhere between here and Debs Comber and yes it was correcty addressed with a return label on it and it was weighed and measured at the local post office to make suer the postage was correct. My postman is not on my Christmas list this year !!!

  3. There are no reasons why you should not fit auxiliary lights, just do not use them in Q or QQ areas, they are fine on hills. If you fit extra lamps use heavy wiring and wire through a relay, don't wire directly through a switch. Pay attention to earthing, particularly on a fiberglass car, earth wires should be the same gauge as power wire. Rather than fitting extra lamps wire your headlamps, again using a relay, so that you get both dip and main beam filiments 'on' on main beam. If you use the H4 type quartz Halogen bulbs you will have no problems. This is how all rally cars were wired up back in the 70's and this is how Mr Ford wired the headlamps on Escort Mexico and RS2000's. Just do not leave lamps on main beam if you are stationery for a long time as the bulb could overheat, no problems when you are moving and there is a cooling airflow. Hope this helps. Stuart Harrold

  4. MCC Standing Supplementary Regulations say:   6.9.1     Have a maximum of 4 forward facing beams in addition to sidelights and indicator lights.   6.9.2     Not use any auxillary lights in non-competitive sections except in conditions of fog or falling snow as permitted by law.   Seems to me that Stuart's means of getting 4 forward facing beams is the only legal way, i.e. dip and main beams together.     Alternativly get a Dellow & you will not want to drive faster than the capability of the lights.

  5. I'm glad to see someone reads the SSRs!  I have run an extra spotlight from a spare 12v battery mounted in sidecar to back up 6v lights in the past, but thank God now unnecessary as present outfit has good headlights!  However Halogen bulbs recommended for weaker lights such as those on old m/cs and cars.  Emphasis on REMEMBERING TO DIP LIGHTS IN VILLAGES ESPECIALLY IN EARLY HOURS OF THE MORNING,  and not to be a nuisance to other road users with blinding foglights

  6. Dear Pop Man (whoever you are as I'd like to know) I'm very disappointed to hear at this late stage that you feel hard done by by the postman who you blame for losing your 2008 Exeter entry.  We have just spent all day Sunday filling nearly 350 envelopes with competitor's information for the 2008 Exeter. If you had kept your eye on the ball there are a number of alternative ways offered by the organising team should you suspect that your entry had been lost.  A simple phone call to Tim Keeling, the event secretary, or myself Tim Whellock the Clerk of the Course, both of whose telephone numbers are in the regs, your problems could have been solved up until we printed the programme at the beginning of last week.   We decided that for the 2008 Exeter we would be flexible about entries given the postal strike at the time, we extended the closing date by a week,  and I think we advertised this flexiblity adequately.  Unfortunately it appears you have slipped through the net and I am sorry about that.

  7. If I can step in here as Moderator on the identity issue as we are a real names community   Pop Man is Ken Green Austin7Froghopper1 is Anne Whellock, although Tim is making this post   See Membership List - Key to Nicknames   Ken has made quite a few posts here in the past over the years, signing his name, and putting up some up some nice pictures.   I always remember missing an Exeter a few years ago, in the days when it was regularly over-subscribed. I hadn't heard anything and rang the late Mary. "Hello it's Michael Leete, haven't heard anything about my entry".   "Don't worry Michael, you are in, I have sent you acknowledgement, must have been that has gone astray".   When the program was published there was no Michael Leete, but there in the bikes was Michael Leeke   Michael

  8. Thanks for that Michael.  Yes I think that we did subsequently work out that Pop Man may be Ken Green.  So we are even more disappointed that his entry for the 2008 Exeter did not get to where it should.  If anyone else is in the same boat or if they find they cannot compete for whatever reason then the Chief marshal Rod Bracey would be very pleased to hear from them.  Tel: 01635 866657 and leave a message.
