Starter motors

The starter in my Dellow (1600 X-FLOW) does not last. The windings tend to melt or the body falls apart! Any advise on fitting a pre engaged type,Would it be better?and what type/model should I try. The starter ring is new and standard.I think the motor fails due to the high compression rather than heavy use.

  1. If money is no object, then Burton (Power) do a gear reduction starter for a modest 짙215 back in 2004, so a bit more now. Don't have any trouble with the Crossflow in my 1980 Morgan, even when I have to crank it for a while after the fuel has drained back. 2. Thank you, spotted the same beast on ebay 짙135.

  3. not sure on this one but you might need to turn the ring gear around or fit a new one to suit the pre engaged motor ,

  4. Yes I think that may be the case.Only had the gearbox out twice in the last 8 weeks!

  5. Starter motors shouldn't 'struggle' like that...your comp. ratio wont be THAT high?   I'd investigate size and security of wiring, especially the earthing from the engine...in fact, run a thick earth cable straight from the starter body back to the battery?   Is the starter mounting actually at right angles to the ring gear? [I have had a 'bent' engine back plate before now.....]   Is the starter gear the correct one for your engine? [ie not fractionally too large in diameter...creating a tight fit onto the ring gear?]   Does it spin faster if you open the throttle wide first?

  6. for johnlees.......a Facet bionic fuel pump will overcome the draining-back problems......switch on, listen to the ticking..when it slows down, the float bowl[s] are full!....I believe they don't cost a lot more than they did 15 years ago!   also very handy for syphoning petrol out of the Morgan, into the bike's fuel tank when hard-up?

  7. I have more earth cables than first classes!! Every thing is fine for the first few months. Then they fall apart or give a high resistance.Don't forget they are "reconditioned units" and I think trial work is hard on them. The starter gear is std on a lighter flywheel. Never tried the open throttle idea.I am using an electric pump and a large carb. The starter is worse on a hot engine!

  8. Had the same problem on my Troll some time ago, its 1700cc X flow with a well worked head. Solved the problem by fitting a genuine Lucas service exchange starter motor that lasted for 2 years rather than a cheap job from the local car parts shop. The Lucas eventually started to get a bit slow and unfortunatly the supply of Lucas 3 bolt fixing exchange motors had just about dried up. So bit the bullet and ordered a Brise high torque axial motor part no 892909AX with a correct 9Tooth pinion. No change required to ring gear. It is just fantastic. Tim Brise was very helpful and buying directly from Brise was cheaper than Demon Tweeks AND you get good technical service direct from the manufacturer. I highly reccomend them.  Stuart Harrold

  9. Thank you , i suspected the compression was a factor.I am interested that you did not turn the starter ring around. If thats the case I will be very tempted by a high torque version. You are correct the rebuilt units are 짙40 ish now and I have used 4 or 5 in as many years. If the units on ebay are any good it should pay for its self in a short time.   Any comment pls on the ebay starters.?

  10. Thank you Alistair, yes, old enough to remember giving my minivan SU pump a clout under the back every now and then. I have a SU pump on my bench which I have considered fitting as it still seems to work despite its age, if I could fit it in series I would, the other answer is to use the Mog at least once a week. Those recon starters are always going to be nothing like a new one, the commutators are turned down and get to overheat more easily. The slower the motor turns the more current it draws = death to the poor thing.

  11. Eurolec components manufacture High-torque starters to fit any vehicle built, but for a standard-ish Ford X-flow they'll have them on the shelf. They manufacture for most of the aftermarket outlets, so buying direct saves a fair amount. Give them a ring on 01384 261984 or do a search for their website. I have no vested interest in the company, but the person who designed these starters is a mate of mine. They also manufacture small race alternators and an alternator that looks like a dynamo. They're currently building me a 6 volt one for my Dellow!

  12. Thank you all for the info.I have made a purchase.Just for info they are half the size and weight, use half the power from the battery and come with 12 months warenty.   And its cheaper than ebay!!!!!

  13. Having recieved the part, yes it is smaller, but with the seperate motor it will not fit.Its all a bit to tight inside the chassis.!!!   So if any body is interested I can pass it on at cost or it will go back to the factory.

  14. I knew I had missed somthing from my original posting. This is the advantage of the Tim Brise made high torque starter. There are no extra 'bits' hanging on the outside. They are a smaller diameter and shorter than the Lucas motor so will fit anything that has a Lucas motor. I found the same problem with my Troll, some time back I purchased a high torqe starter from, I think, Cambridge Motorsport, The motor was smaller than the Lucas BUT had a big solenoid hanging on the one side and it fouled the chassis rails so would not fit. Cambridge were very good, they took it back with a full refunded. The Brise motor will fit. eMail Tim Brise at        timATbrise.co.uk     for details. Stuart Harrold

  15. Sorry to hear the starter doesn't fit - it must be a tight chassis. However, if you give Jason a ring at Eurolec he will alter the bracket to allow clearance. I've spoken to him about it so he's expecting a call!   I also mentioned in the last post that they were building me a 6 volt alternator. Well, it's fitted, looks like a dynamo, and charges at 50 amps flat out compred to the old dynamo at around 12 amps. White headlamps at last!!   Andy

  16. I spoke to Jason and asked him if he could build a 12v with
a speedo take off at the rear and he can. Will have to go for two of those!

  17. Speedo take-off ?   Mark. Whilst I think about it, did you ever get a copy of the photograph of EVG 28 when it was owned (late 50's) by Alan Blick of Stroud? He is still alive and I could ask someone to contact him if you are interested in adding it to your Dellow history file.

  18. I picked up on this thread just recently.   Following the rebuild of my E93A engine the old stater motor just wasn't man enough to spin the engine and when smoke started coming out of the windings I knew enough was enough!   On Tuesday of last week I spoke to Michael at Powerlite to see what he could do for me. He didn't have a starter off the shelf but offered to make one for me. The old unit was despatched, they received it on Thursday during which several telephone conversations took place and a few photos despatched. Friday afternoon he phoned to say a new unit was being sent and this morning (Monday) it arrived and has now been fitted.   What a difference - the old unit weighed 15.9 lb (assuming my bathroom scales are accurate) whereas the new unit weighs 8.2 lb and of course is hugely more powerful and it spins the engine superbly.   I have no connection with the Company other than being a very satisfied customer and thought I would share my experiences with you.   Their contact details are Eurolec Components 01384 261984 and apparently I am to be featured as one of their case studies in due course.   Tony Brooks

  19. I took Eurolec my 100E dynamo a couple of weeks ago which
has a rev counter take off at the rear and they are going to build me an
alternator which locks and fits within the old dynamo size, Decided to order a starter
at the same time. They are not cheap so lets hope the reports are good
