My Edinburgh Trial

How was your Edinburgh?

I was running second car which turned out to be an advantage when we got to Moneystones, where the deviation was still grassy! Didn't progress very far up Litton Slack although we did see a couple of chairs go clean, including Celia I think. Well done. As to the cars I have only heard of three cleans, Dudley, Ray Goodright and Eric Wall.

Missed not doing Putwell and Haggside, but personally pleased that the deviation on Great Hucklow is now fenced off and out of bounds. Mind you the section we used seemed much roughre than I remember, a bit challenging for Class 0 I thought.

We failed the restart on Excelsior but I understand that was cancelled later so perhaps a silver for us.

  1. I thought it was a good Edinburgh. We were car 100 so quite early and romped up Litton to the Restart a shot out of the Restart with no problem only to come to a sudden stop around the top corner just a few feet from the gate. I think we put the front nearside wheel aginst an unseen rock. Some sections were on really good form especially the deviation on Moneystones, remembering how slippery Moneystones was 2 years ago as a special test I let my tyres down very low and had no problems. Some Restart boxes were so short they could have been just a line. The weather was not as bad as we expected and the really heavy rain only started after we had signed off, but the wind was very strong and blew my Troll all over the road. A great supper let down by a totally useless PA system that did not allow us to hear anything that was said, shame. Stuart Harrold

  2. Was one of the short restarts on Black Harry? In actual fact is was about 5 or 6 feet long so plenty of room to get an axle in. However, I observed that there was quite a foreshortening effect when viewed from down the slope. Great Hucklow restart box was about the same length.

  3. My first ever Edinburgh from the passenger seat after many drives in the Beetle, Dellow and Allard.     Michael comments on the roughness for Class O ( or 'Class Nothing' as a certain naughty Stroud driver calls it ...........) and it certainly produced two 'popped' new tyres on a Dellow.   Stuart mentions the restart 'boxes'. Well, several of them were so short as to bear little resemblance to the drawing shown in the route card. Anyone new to trialling would have expected a box large enough to give all 3 options shown in the drawing - so they were  in for a surprise.   Great Hucklow is a worthy MCC hill but seems to inflict needless damage by means of the firmly embedded projecting rocks at hub-height on the sides of the track - rather like the low outcrops at the very top of Crooked Mustard which produced bent rims every single time I climbed it.   Given the weather, it made me realise once again what a fantastic job the officials and marshals do. The scrutineers remained cheerful at the end of a very long session, without exception the start line marshals seemed a pretty happy bunch - and spare a thought for the stalwart who directed traffic adjacent to the village hall 'tea and cake' stop all day long.   A brilliant (if not in the literal sense) day and serious thanks to all the organisers and marshalls.
