My Exeter

Just got home after a really enjoyable Exeter. Running quite early at no 106 we didn't have many delays and did all the hills before Exeter in the dark. This meant there was no possibility to look down Normans Hump and compare it to the pictures! I didn't have any trouble but some of the later numbers told me that both Normans Hump and Clinton had the inside of the first corner cut up very badly.

Clearing Simms was the highlight of my trial. I had only done it once before, more than 10 years ago when running a big engine. Some say it was easy this year but I will put it down to driving skill! I thought Fingle was rough. I enjoyed it but I should think the guy in the Carlton in Class 0 must have loved it!

Complaints, well yes, the Trecarn. I know the meal has to be canteen food but I think its taken a turn for the worse since it changed hands. Then there is the smell of musty rotting wood in the corridors! If its that or not have a big manifestation I suppose we will have to put up with it but I hope the committee take it up with the management.

How was your Exeter?

  1. Had a really enjoyable trial, many thanks to Tim and Anne W for lending Andrew Brown and I their fugitive.  In the true nature of wash & go trialling we jet washed it in Torquay before delivering it back to them.  We obviously weren't the first to the jet wash though - lots of red mud there already     And of course a big thank you to the whellox, tim keeling and all for putting the trial on.  Fifth gear boys seemed to have had a really good day out although we'll have to wait for 8pm on the 4th February to find out the full story!

  2. Excellent Trial - low point failing Simms but according to spectator it was more of a high point with wheels in the air giving no drive! Checkout link   http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=wingsW to see incar video shots of some sections MikeW TR7

  3. "View from the very back" :-

Fingle smooth, everywhere else very "dug up" with "holes
in the holes", but clearable except (for me at least) Simms as slippery as I've
    ever seen it!

  4. We didnt stay till the end of Simms but it seems to have loads of grip early on.

Climb of the decade must have been the Blue Trojan climbing Simms - not much more speed than the green one at the first step but it just kept going until everyone gradually realised that it might just go and the cheer was huge as you can imagine, but has anyone got it on video?

What was the Discovery doing trying Simms, and a named official it appeared to be aswel.....

  5. Good to hear the Exeter Trial went down well.   Great to see the video on You Tube. Slippery Sam last section for everyone except Class 0, closed 6 minutes late and Bay View last section for Class 0 closed about 2 hours late but still in daylight due to delay at Fingle and Hitchcombe.  Class 0 is not easy, it is not meant to be.  Anyone want to volunteer to organise a luxury hotel and gourmet dinner for 380 people at £36.00 per head please do not hesitate to get in touch.  We would love to hear from you.  Keep posting.

  6. Hi Team Whellox and all the organising crew. Just wanted to say a big thanks for the Exeter from all the HRG crew, all Hurgs made it up Simms this year, first time in ages. Yes the hotel is a bit ropey but for the money what do you expect, its just what you need at the end of the trial, so long as theres a bar to lean against and tell tall tales of the various sections its fine by me.   Cheers   Stuart

  7. And of course all the marshals, who were all doing a sterling job in the face of some lousy weather. We'd be lost without you.

  8. Great trial, thanks to Tim and the team. We ran at 143 in my Troll, just a little to early to get much further than just out of the restart box on Wooston Steep. The best 'burn out' of the trial must go to Paul Bartleman in his Troll, he was the car in front of us on Wooston and we listened to him on maximum revs for several minutes AND we could see the tyre smoke rising above the tops of the tall trees as we sat on the start line! That told us that it was going to be very very difficult. Very much liked the new test and site at Clifford, thanks again Tim. We claimed a silver. Our gang from Ross reckoned the meal at the Trecarn was pretty good and they have a hand pulled beer available. Don't know about the smell as we always stay just down the road. Stuart Harrold

  9. Trecarn? Where else would put up with us (400+ muddy MCC people)?   We (Ian Davis and I) had a great day out in the Whellox Fugitive which enabled me to see the top of Wooston for the first time in several years. And to those who commented adversely that we had the "hood" up all day: (a) we couldn't actually work out how to take the top off, and (b) it's stops you banging your head on the rollbar when bouncing. Those are my excuses and I'm sticking with them.   Andrew

  10. Excellent trial.   To finish on time with the poor weather and a hold up on Fingle must have been down to good organization.   Fingle was suprizingly rough, a good test of class O cars & bikes.   I agree that the Trecarn was less than perfect but it is obviously opened up especially for us and the musty smell is inevitable as is the tepid water.   However, my bed was comfortable, the staff were friendly and the breakfast was good; as Andrew says we are lucky that anybody at all will put up with us when we are wet muddy & tired.

  11. May have been smooth for you, try it on a sidecar some time - those deep ruts at the beginning are in exactly the wrong place, as some of us proved.

  12. The Trojan`s  climb of Simms was filmes by the Channel 5 team and who knows this may be included in the final cut - The entire climb might take up too much time to show ! All vehicles were also filmed by a regular privateer for his own viewing - name unknown although I know he knows most of us. For my money, one of  the fastest, most spectacular and commendable climbs was the Morgan 4/4 of Gregory Dixon-Smith. It was a league above your Escorts. Having said that I know that the crowds who had waited in rain most of the day appreciated the Cornish boys who presented a Master Class of driving at the end of the day.
