Ford 3 speed g/boxes....and propshafts

a question for Ren5, apparently......how to easily adapt a ford 3 speed gearbox, from a torque tube transmission..[Ford 103E Pop], to  a 'hardy-spicer' type propshaft?
 
I have tried 100E box, but tailshaft is too long....leading to a prop that is too short.
 
also, the engine is a 10 horse jobbie, and the gearbox has the handy clutch lever things.
 
but I can't seem to get a prop arrangement that stays attached to the gearbox.
 
I've tried using the  top end of a torque tube, up to the loose roller bearing.....welded to its cones, then bolted to the box, with the driveshaft welded to the splined tube normally found at the other end of the shaft......this connects to the gearbox shaft.....but not for long!
 
is there any easy adaption I can be pointed to?
 
What gearboxes adapt easily to the ford 10HP engine?
 
[physical size and weight is important....there needs to be room for my feet!]

Alistair, I have a Peter Le couer conversion in my Dellow which uses a 105e van axle with the long side shortened, the half sahft shortened, a flange welded on the front end of the diff to which the torque tube is bolted. The propshaft is a modified E93A with a coupling which is mated to the 105e pinion. This is the weakest part and i am on my third version which has held for 2 seasons. You can retain the E93a back plates, hubs and cable brakes. Fitting a 4.7 diff is the closest you can get to the E93a but you end up with a back axle with strong internals and original features and 3 spd gear box. Being a purist this was the closest I could get to originallity with better reliability .I may still have the drawings if you are interested.

  3. hello......yes, I would be interested in any details..thanks.   However, the axle[s] I am using are Suzuki Supercarry van item[s].....nice, 3 foot 9" track, about the same as a Ford pop's axle width.....with a [roughly] 5:1 final drive ratio.   It has a 2 star diff...but if one can be found, a very early [SJ 80?] Suzuki jeep back axle is better...it has a central final drive [not offset], and very strong [4 star] diffs can be had  as standard, or from the USA, for modest sums......the downside is, the final drive ratio is not as favourable as the van's.   [ I have a suspicion it was the Liege tribe I caught, measuring up my Cannon's axle, some years ago.....:)]   the propshaft is  a shortened [suzuki] item, with a splined joint for stretch......I am not bothered about the torque tube arrangement...but the 3 speed Ford box needs some sort of arrangement to attach a flange, reliably. Another issue is, the rear end of the Ford box has no real oil sealing....oil being needed in its original home, to lubricate the shaft and bearing on the Ford torque tube drive system...and speedo drive.   problems, problems???

  4. I have a shortened one side 105E axle case that is surplus to requirements if you go down that route eventually.

  5. Yes it is possible I have used the Peter Le Couter
    conversion which I have had to modify as the  propshaft drive coupling kept
    shearing but my latest version has lasted a 2 seasons.

     

    You can retain the E93A hubs , cable brakes and have
    stronger diff and half shafts with a 4.7 diff.

     

    I may still have the drawings if you
    want them-did the mod 20 years ago!

  6. is there any other type of gearbox still around that is an easy fit to a 10 hp Ford motor?   or is it a case{:)] of..anything can be made to fit providing...............????
