Salisbury Axle

If you went to the Falcon Brickhill Trial a few weeks ago, you would have seen my good friend's Scimitar-based special.  He used a 1970's coupe as the donor car.  The rear axle is a Salisbury unit and is about an inch narrower than the later GTE Scimitars.  The axle proved not to be strong enough under trials conditions.  Does anybody know of a Salisbury 4-star dif. that will fit into the Scimitar unit to solve this problem?  We have heard that the limited slip dif. has a 4-star set up as standard.  Is this correct and can it be adapted to give a strong non-LSD set up?  Any suggestions gratefully received!

  1. A friend who used to race and rally as well as trial, used to use a Salisbury limited slip diff with the firiction plates removed because it was a 4 planet wheel diff.   Billy Belllinger of JB Sports Engineering (07932 045 693) info@jb-engineering.co.uk knows his Salisbury diffs and may have something in stock.   Peter

  4. Thank you. The casing will be kept the same, and we will not be using LSD bits.Yes I know that Transit diffs are used. But where do you source them before they have been to the moon and back in white van mans wheels?

  5. In case you didn't know, the planet gears in Transits are the same as Escort/Cortina etc.and they and the spider with the 4 pins on one forging are available from Ford dealers/agents anywhere at reasonable cost . I'm pretty sure the gears come with thrust washers as well.Simon has bought some recently to renovate his Transit conversion so they can't be frighteningly expensive!Hope this helps.Regards John Groves(better known these days as Simon's dad!)
